I think it sounds worse than it was! I actually didn't feel any pain after the procedure, I just oozed from everywhere. It was very much like having a bad head cold or sinus infection, except it went away in about a day and then I could see things like a normal person for the first time in my life.

I had my LASIK surgery! They gave me lorazepam beforehand but i still nearly had a vasovagal syncope (fainting attack) during the procedure which sucked hardcore BUT it meant i got wet washcloths on my wrists and a free bottle of water.

Slept the rest of the day and about 50% of the next day. Healing is going well, halos and glare still pretty pronounced but apart from that my eyesight is as good now as it as with glasses. And it's nice to have an excuse to stay off the internet.

B+ (points deducted due to syncope), would recommend.

How is your vision in the dark compared to when you had glasses? Is everything the same brightness? I've tried contacts but between usual discomforts of contacts, and dark places being somehow darker than when I had glasses, I couldn't handle it. Anything in shadow was darker than what it was when I had glasses on. I want to get lasik or some other eye correction but I'm super afraid of getting stuck with that weird side effect even after. I couldn't drive at night cause everything was pitch black aside from direct light sources. I could at least see past my own headlights with my glasses on. Google is no help for finding any answers.

Kitten Nightmares posted:

I'm in the same boat. I have a consultation appointment on April 27th (at an office that offers more procedures than LASIK/PRK). I've been wearing glasses since age 7, and I'm now 30 with -9.5/-9.75 vision. I don't even recognize myself without glasses which is one of the reasons I couldn't get used to wearing contacts (plus I couldn't stand putting them in due to my aversion of touching my eyeballs). I plan to wear glasses with no prescription once all is said and done.

Can't wait to wear nice expensive/cheap lovely sunglasses and cute throwaway fashion eyeglasses :allears:

Edit: Update

I ended up going to UCLA's vision center for a free consultation/eye exam. I'm not a good candidate for LASIK or PRK, but they recommended that I consider an implantable contact lens (Visian ICL). My research before the appointment said the procedure tends to run between $2k-$4k per eye but with their facility/service/medical fees, it's $7.5k for the first eye and $6k for the second and requires a few pre- and a lot of post-op visits, and I loving detest driving to LA.

I'm going to see what the private vision center says on May 4th , when I do a consult with them (I had to reschedule my prior appointment). I'll definitely make sure the aftercare is included in the cost. So...may the fourth be with me, I guess.

Had my consultation with NVision yesterday and after measuring my eyes they are confident I am a good candidate for the lasik procedure they offer. I'm relieved because it will end up costing me less than $5k for both eyes versus the $13k+ ICL that UCLA recommended, plus I can use my optometrist for follow up appointments. Procedure scheduled for June 1st :toot:

one week follow-up, 20/20, got the okay to stop the steroid and antibiotic drops, and a copy of my corneal topography scan. i asked for it even though i have no idea what it means; i thought it would be fun to have for my records. But they copied it in black and white so the heat map is worthless.

the explanation i got was that it dries the eyes out, and shortly after lasik dry eyes are already an issue so you don't want to make it any worse.

Also someone in TCC mentioned THC affecting intraocular pressure and I didn't wanna risk it.

to reiterate, I very rarely smoke but I was told to just hold off for awhile to not exacerbate the more common side effects.

Hm, weird, I woke up this morning with some slight blurriness in my right eye. Was crisp and 20/20 when I went to sleep.

Using some eyedrops frequently, but still some blur.

I'm going into the office tomorrow to have the doctor take a look just in case, but is this sort of fluctuation normal with healing?

I had a similar result. Your eyes are going to dry out and inflame a bit while you're sleeping. You have an anti-inflammatory drop with all the other drops you're supposed to be using, right? Your doctor should have also given you a mask that will help you not rub your eyes in your sleep. That mask will also help your eyes dry out less, especially if you have a ceiling fan on in your bedroom. There's also a gel type drop that is thicker and good before bed.

A year later and I'll still wake up with super dry eyes, but otherwise my vision is fine and I'm down to drops before bed and drops when I wake up.

Yes, within the first few months all kinds of short-term oddities can appear.

look through a faithless eye; are you afraid to die?

I had my procedure done on Friday. It was the most bizarre experience and I slept from noon until 8am to make my 9am appointment Saturday morning.

Forgot to ask my eye doc what my vision was at during the follow-up, but I'm definitely seeing distance more sharply than I did with glasses. Everything has a kind of hazy bloom, and I can't focus up close at all, until about 5 inches from my face. My optometrist said that my close-up vision should improve as the eyes heal.

The weirdest part for me is still how I look without glasses. I haven't decided whether I'm going to wear my non-prescription frames to work tomorrow. This evening I'm going to get a haircut and see how much less recognizeable I can get.

Had my 1 week followup yesterday, the doctor says my right eye is very dry, which is causing the blurring, and gave me some Retaine ointment to use at night.

He didn't seem worried, but has anyone had experience like this? Next followup is in July, but he told me I could call his personal number if I had any problems.

Dry eyes after LASIK are extremely common, especially for the first month or so. You should be using drops at least once a day for now, generally preservative free drops that come in single use containers. Are you doing that?

Yeah, per his instructions i've got cipro (2x-4x daily), prednisone(2x-4x daily), xiidra (2x daily), and artificial tears in the vials (hourly)

In addition, a retaine PM ointment at night in the right eye.

Still getting fluctuations, and like I said, he didn't seem worried, but being paranoid is what I do.

That is the same schedule I was on, or very similar, and I had the same fluctuations early on. It took me a few months until I could wake up and not have my vision be a little blurry. It sounds like you're on the right track and as long as the doctor says you're okay, nothing you've described sounds different from my experience. I think it's normal to be a little worried when it comes to your vision. Plus, it's a little odd to have it fluctuate during the day. You'll be just fine with a bit of time and healing.

I was given 4x of a steroid and 4x of an antibiotic a day. And eye drops whenever I felt the need so every 20 minutes the first few days to an hour to never after a month

Does blurriness normally fluctuate during the day? I'm looking at getting lasik done (if my horrible eyes can handle it) and might have some visual acuity tests coming up for work, so I'd rather not risk those.

What's the time frame normally from making contact to having it done? I guess it depends a lot on the place?

Internet Explorer
Jun 1, 2005

Only really during the first month or two while things are healing. After that, my vision only fluctuates with normal stuff like if my eyes are particularly dry (I live in a very dry area), slept face down, eyes are tired from staring at a computer screen all day, etc.

For me it was fairly quick between consult and operation. I think a few weeks? I have heard from others that depending on the place or your eyes they may want to see you again after a while, just to make sure your eyes are stable. But my eyes were fairly simple, so I don't think I needed that. I think there's still some people who would prefer to go to a really well known eye doctor or vision specialist that isn't just a lasik place. To me, it seems like the technology has advanced enough that I was comfortable going to a place that just does lasik and does like ~50 procedures a day. It seemed to me that the machines did pretty much all of the work.

Deviant

18 days post surgery, still getting some dryness and some blurriness, particularly in my right eye. Vision away from computer screens is way better than at the computer, and night // low light is still a bit iffy.

Steroid drops end tomorrow, then it's just Xiidra 2x daily, artificial tears hourly or more, and night time ointment.

1 month followup is on 6/29. I'm not too worried though, my right eye fluctuates, feels almost like it's *trying* to snap into place, so it may just be a slow healer.

Kitten Nightmares

I think we got our surgery on the same day. I only had to take my medicated drops for a week post surgery, I've just been using preservative free tears since (probably not as often as I should though). Close-up vision wise, my right eye is definitely not as sharp as my left. Either my astigmatism didn't go away or that eye is just taking longer to heal. And I also noticed driving at night it's not as clear when trying to read street signs from a distance as in daylight, even when the signs are decently lit. I'll report back after my one-month follow up, also on 6/29 :hfive:

Xiidra 2x daily
Minocycline 50mg
Refresh Liquigel as needed/hourly
Retaine PM ointment overnight
hot compress 2x daily.

Hopefully this will iron out the issue.
