At my (secular private) school, we got a crash course in each of the major religions as part of our standard history curriculum, and I think that's probably the best way to teach religion in a secular setting. I'd be interested in hearing about how other people learned comparative religion, though. I had kind of the same thing, crash course in major religions at my private Christian school. I don't remember much of it beyond the Five Pillars of Islam, the Four Noble Truths, and the Noble Eightfold Path.
