(He is uninsured but can afford to a degree).

So I've done the research and most of these services suck rear end to being sometimes okay at best. Not worth the risk, just going to have to deal with drive times and all that fun stuff.

I've been on Adderall two different times and never had that drug prescribed with it.

How much of an obvious effect are ADHD meds supposed to be? Should I obviously feel different? I feel like I don't notice much, but my wife swears up and down they help me when I take them. So maybe they work and I suck as self-assessing. Or maybe another med/higher dose would satisfy us both? Idk.

Having been on some form of ADHD, bipolar, and anxiety meds since age 8 my opinion is that the best meds are ones you only notice when you don’t take them. Like, when I take my ADHD meds I don’t notice, but when I don’t I’ll be like “oh, it’s 11 am and I haven’t done any work this morning, I’ve been reading the internet for 3 hours, i forgot my Adderall.”

On the flip side I recently had to switch from Adderall to Ritalin because of the shortage and for the first two weeks when my dosage was too high I had absolutely crushing, paralyzing anxiety. We dropped all the dosages by 10mg and now I don’t notice it, I just get things done.

The effect of Ritalin is pretty noticeable to me, in terms of starting new tasks promptly and staying in task. I imagine that varies a lot person to person.

Also trying a different dose is not a bad idea when you're on a new med. Maybe you do need a higher dose.

Personally speaking I notice but it's good that your wife notices a difference. I'd talk to your psych about trying a higher dose to see if you notice, when I was dialing in it on Adderal it went "okay I feel different, I'm noticing an effect, it's working but not as much as it could, theeeere we go."

Riven
Apr 22, 2002
Yeah totally, I don’t want to imply you shouldn’t experiment to find the perfect dose. Generally the way these things go is you ramp up until it’s unpleasant and then you knock a dosage level off and that’s your dose.

Freudian
Mar 23, 2011

Fun tip for all involved: don't accidentally take twice your dose for two days running, it's not ideal.

(I started out on 18mg Delmosart (methylphenidate) and then moved up to 36mg which hit the sweet spot, I still had a bunch of 18mg tablets left so I just took two. when I ran out of those, I forgot to stop taking two, putting me at a total of 72mg, which is over the maximum you can be prescribed in the UK!)

Keep on GOP rolling rolling rolling rolling.

My spouse got tired of me and my mother never looking for food properly, so she moved all the condiments to the fridge drawers and put the food on the outer shelves where it is highly visible. This has so far worked very well and I am wasting a good deal less cheese and fruit that was previously in the drawers where it got forgotten.

There's also peel 'n stick dry erase surfaces, if you're interested. My husband and I got a big one (I think it was Post-It brand. From Staples? Maybe?) and cut it up so we could stick half on one of our kitchen cupboards and the other on the downstairs fridge. This was one of the best things we've done. Cupboard door is for To Do things around the house and messages to each other for daily tasks or items for the grocery list. Downstairs is for whatever leftovers are stored in the fridge. We're actually getting more stuff communicated and done, and our food waste is reduced a bit more. I mean, I still forget about all sorts of stuff in the fridges so it's a work in progress but better than it used to be. Highly recommend adding a magnetic caddy for dry eraser and markers.

Other thing that I discovered recently: there's an app called KitchenPal that lets you scan barcodes on foodstuffs to track what you have in your pantry/fridge. They pull info from the USDA food lists so often your item is already existing in the database. If not, it's pretty easy to add in. You can track multiples of stuff and it's even got a built in grocery list. Suddenly I'm not going into the pantry and discovering that I have five bottles of ketchup because I keep forgetting if I have any and just buy another one.

Best purchase of December 2021 was a giant rear end 2022 Mother Word family calendar. Cutesy teddy bear families in cheerful colors to constantly draw my eye combined with day planner stickers that match all the various bills and birthdays and stuff. We've got it hanging in the kitchen by the door we use most frequently and I absolutely mean it when I say that it has been a game changer. Bills are paid on time, I'm actually remembering birthdays, the garbage goes out for pick up on time. And I get to play with stickers! I bought another one for this year, bought one for my sister too.

I started doing this with post-it notes for my partner. The post-it goes on the outside of the fridge and he removes it when he's eaten the meal. Normally, I remove them all at the end of the week but the post-it reminds him that there's food in the fridge or something.

I’ve needed to become a lot more self-directed at work lately, and naturally it’s been a bit of a struggle. Even if I can hyperfocus for a few hours at a time, I have trouble extending that over a period of weeks. I’ve been on stimulant meds for about 15 years, and they definitely help me maintain a base level of functionality. But Im looking for some alternatives, because stimulants don’t do it all.

I recently heard about clonodine being used for adhd. Anyone have experiences with it?

I’ve tried co-dosing my daily 5-10mg of dexedrine with 40mg of straterra, but I can’t tell if it does anything.

I don't know anything about the first one, but as for Strattera, I've never known it to affect my focus directly, but it does great things for my baseline anxiety level 😅

In my experience, strattera is extremely sensitive to the presence of citric acid in the intestine (maybe stomach also). So perhaps also check if you're eating or drinking anything containing that alongside your pill time (you're probably doing that anyway because of the bigger stimulant, but I gotta be sure! nothing ever mentions that it hits strattera too! and I find the QoL hit is way worse, too, like it makes me super irritable all day instead of just not working)

I don’t find that citric acid impacts the effectiveness of Strattera but I do find the more I eat with it the less likely it is to make me nauseous.

Idk about base vs acid in general, but the effect is stark enough in my own experience that I'm pretty sure that I've identified the culprit correctly. There aren't too many differing ingredients between decaff diet Dr Pepper and decaff diet Pepsi, except for citric acid I think the only possibility is in the unspecified "Natural Flavors"

I take mine with my breakfast out of habit (along with the rest of my meds, except for topamax because it's a hater that will also gently caress with strattera in the same way as citric acid or at least that's what it feels like :zombie:), so I don't actually know if I rolled the nausea side-effect too.
