It's the vents to let the air out of the tiny little part of the sharp tips/small details they're attached to. You are right, they weren't always that big or prominent.

Maybe there used to be some sort of process that removed them automatically, but they don't want to use for some reason? Or they've made them bigger to make sure the whole detail gets cast at the expense of more work at clean up?
