AWD isn't a must but more of a "nice to have". I think it's on my mind because we've got lots of snow and ice on the roads right now and my snow tire-less FWD is having a hard time on some side streets that the plows kinda half-assed or missed entirely. Not really worth it for just a few months out of the year though, you're right.
