I bet it's a situation where they just figured it's already gone too far and fairly new, so why not just make it to a gas station, let the dealership give you a new one (Jeep Gladiator has had a very problematic run). It looked like they were on an elevated part of the freeway at the start, which is not the best place to spend a few hours.

Saw someone doing the same thing on the west park tollway in Houston once. Only it was night time and the sparks were fierce… No cops anywhere around when I passed him. I can’t imagine what makes a person want to continue to drive like that. No fucks given

From the front left corner bodywork damage I'm assuming stolen and hit and run, or drunk and hit and run, and they decided totaling it by leaving a ten mile skidmark on the road was better than catching charges for either of those things.
