Everyone should bucket list to do at least a national round as part of a crew. Even if you are just flinging spanners to the main mechanics, it's an experience. We might be back at the local WRC round in 2021, any goon is welcome to join us.

Not really. They are really stiff. The biggest problem flat tires cause is when they rip apart and start ripping up the aero near the wheel. Schumacher's Ferrari was still going pretty fast despite only having 3 wheels.

Check out 2016 Chinese GP when Hulk loses a wheel... wheel pops off, chassis is on ground: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTrL9oSKWuo
Hakkinen in '99 too, loses a rear, and is on 2 wheels: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7RsWMcVGTM
Ditto with Mansell in '86: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIX-JmmmonY

With the old high nose, you could lose a front tire and continue, but today's cars are lower and the nose is much lower. Lose a rear, and it's diagonal-bicycle time.

There's a video I can never find when I want to where a body shop brings in an old dude to show how they used to do body leading back in the day. This is a pre-Bondo method of patching and repair where you literally melt lead solder into dents on the (steel) body with a torch, and smooth it out while molten with tools that look like flatirons and palette knives.

The old guy demos the technique, and is very good at it, and the biggest things I took away were that he used no protective equipment, had zero teeth left, and his entire body trembled any time he wasn't intentionally moving.

I worry a lot more about the torching it part. Lead vaporizes at a pretty low temp. Filings will fall to the floor pretty quick due to their density, but he's probably inhaled a crazy amount of vapor over the decades.

Assuming the 2007 timestamp in the corner is accurate, he was ~85 years old when that video was taken. Dude was doing pretty fuckin' well for his age.

I do body leading too as it is the best method of body panel repair (the repair patch will be more corrosion resistant than the rest of the car)

The metal is a non eutektic tin/lead alloy like solder, but because it is non eutektic it doesn't have a melting point but a temperature zone in which it becomes softer and softer. This allows you to mold the metal dough into any shape you want.

The vapour pressure of the metals involved is high enough that you usually don't run risk of gaseous metal ingestion. The biggest health issue is the grinding of the patch. Usually you use a bodywork file to get rid of most of it but for the finer stages you can get the best results with an air sander. This will distribute very fine airborne lead particles.

I have a special high volume fume extractor for tinning and welding and I use a military grade gas mask with combination filters and since I don't do this commercially I am only exposing myself to the dust infrequently.

My dad who was an engine builder and now operates a body shop for 25 years where I learned these techniques in my youth would make a very big point of me not being around whenever he ground the solder but for the actual tinning, it's pretty much the same as soldering electronics. Just gotta be careful about the burn off of flux and whatever you use to protect the wooden tinning tools (bees wax is recommended but I usually use ATF - it leaves less residues)

Lead vaporizes starting at 752F and vapor pressure rises to 1 bar at 3180F, it's a lot easier to accidentally torch it into the air than most people think. Especially if you're using an OA torch which can hit 5800 to 6300 pretty easy. Even a regular propane torch will hit 3590F.

I am absolutely the least likely person ever to give a gently caress about PPE - I spent 3 days this week MIG welding in jorts and a T shirt with no gloves - and I wear a respirator when I'm using any kind of a torch on any lead product.

They're pin stands -- they slot into horizontal holes in the side of the car's frame. It would take some doing to make them fall.

Here's a video I haven't watched yet that seems like it explains the concept:

I use a propane torch on very soft/ low flame but I generally don't heat the solder directly. I heat up the body panel until the solder stick starts to deform if you lightly push it onto the patch. Then it's a balance of circulating the area with the torch or taking the torch away to keep the consistency of the solder dough like while you mold it with the woods.

Also yeah full PPE, fume extractor, 2 condoms and my mother on speed dial. I'm pretty sure my doses of lead from the shooting range and explosives are quite a bit above of what I inhale during body repair.

The time when men of reason go to bed. Certain old men prefer to rise at about that time, taking a cold bath and a long walk with an empty stomach, and otherwise mortifying the flesh. They then point with pride to these practices as the cause of their sturdy health and ripe years; the truth being that they are hearty and old, not because of their habits, but in spite of them. The reason we find only robust persons doing this thing is that it has killed all the others who have tried it.
