I Immed on Armageddon.org for about 18 months, was an avid player.

Lot of good memories, lots of bad memories. Lots of silly drama and lots of legit crazy poo poo. Like the Imm who talked a player into peeing on them at a player/imm gathering.

Mostly a very professional staff, one or two douchebags and one massive cheating dickhead imm who abused his position.

Was that cheating dickhead Halaster? I liked him, but I heard rumors about his cheating. I also heard something about Sanvean cheating.

I'd be surprised if Halaster cheated. What was the cheating drama? It probably was around when I got banned from the game for mouthing off to Nessalin, the ultimate dish it out but can't take it type of internet enjoyable human being who seemed real nice in person when I met him but is a huge rear end in a top hat in the safety of distance.

The Imm I'm referring to ran an famous templar. At one point I was having an imm to imm conversation with him and Savak or whatever his name was, and mentioned that the plan from an Imm perspective was to encourage a Borsail player to try to manipulate this templar.

The Imm in question sent a reply 'Ihsahn won't be manipulated' and killed the Borsail player in-game the next day. He got found out for a lot of his BS though and got demoted.

I'd bet a lot of money that Sanvean never cheated. She doesn't like me for a variety of reasons and it's unfortunate because there was a lot that was said about me to the other Imms that was just frankly not true and the person responsible for it has apologized to me.

What were the cheating rumors? I'd actually like to play Armageddon again because I did like the game a lot.

I think MUDs are 100x more fun then say, WoW(if you want to go there), and all they really need is an active player base. If any of the above MUDs had thousands of players, they would be beyond fun. People just need to see it, and get past the ascii.

Yeah, you nailed it. People cannot get beyond the ascii.

Not having to futz around with graphics means that tons of features can be implemented in short order without having to make a new model and skins, etc.

Plus the freedom of emotes means that I can dance around and fall over a table drunkenly and knock over several mugs of ale. Which the other players can then react to.

You can't do that poo poo in WoW. Or even if you do have a freeform emote command like AO did you still are dealing with a playerbase that only reacts to what it sees not what it reads.

Character freedom is extremely limited in most games compared to MUDs.

Playing Armageddon right now. Made a character on Achaea but then remembered how much effort pvp combat was. Also, have been unable to connect to Achaea lately and I'm betting my character got wiped. Is anyone else having this issue?

What's Armageddon like now? Sometimes I think about going back but I'm not sure about their staff. It's been a good 5 years so maybe things are better.

Worse. 1000x worse. Staff no longer initiates plots, it's all player driven, and the Rp has gone into the shitter, since literally no one on staff gives a gently caress anymore. I even recruited some goons, and then was just straight up embarrassed at the way people Rp'd. If you're looking for anyone to follow the themefiles? Give up. If you're looking to worship the untouchable GodCharacters that have been around since staff stopped running Cool poo poo big enough to kill Utter Badasses, then it's your game.

It's sad really, Arm kicked a bunch of rear end back when it was really good.

I was a staffmember for about a year back around 2002/2003. I retired cause I was too tired of policing players, etc, and because of typical MUD drama.

I later had issues with Nessalin and Sanvean, the former because he's ridiculous and the latter because of something that was my fault. I logged in one day to find my account banned and was like, well, that was that. Never got an explanation but I suspect it had to do with posting silly threads in their offtopic forum. Not offensive, just silly. I think the thread that got me banned was a thread encouraging people to eat more fiber.

To lose my character and account for that made me think I didn't want to put my hard work in the hands of people who would do that.

I still toy with the idea of coming back just because I loved the environment and playing it as a solo survival mud was pretty fun. But I can't help but to wonder if I'd end up getting banned again after putting more work and care into a character because of something that was BS because one of the main Imms decides he or she doesn't like you.

I remember one player was drawing characatures of the Imms. It was quaint, whatever. Nessalin told the player in question not to draw anything for his Imm account. So the player just used a Sun image and called it Nessalin for his Imm portrait collage. Nessalin banned him. Such a enjoyable human being.

Yep. Which staffmember were you? I've been playing since about 2001. But yeah, that's pretty much how it is, except Nessalin doesn't do much and it's um.. Nyr now who is an utter cock for no reason to people. And theme is just straight out the window, especially in Allanak. It's hilariously bad compared to when it could be so very cool, I recently just stopped logging in because I was so tired of it.

Also there's a bunch of OOC drama because half of them go to APMs and cheat in spouses/each other/etc. It's just nerd drama at it's highest and it spills into IC.

Yeah I went to the Imm gathering, not the APM.

I was Narlac there, never did much of note other than play the Borsail senator during the trial of that one chick who was a Merchant who then became a Tuluki noble house. You probably have never heard of me.

I also helped kill Pearl with that necro window spell on a character of mine but I thought that whole thing went down really lovely and I felt bad for Pearl. Basically here is an extremely long-lived character and 10 loving people wearing masks jump out of a hole in nothing 'kill pearl' and she drops to the ground before she knows what happens. I wasn't an Imm at that point but I was shocked and did one of those immortal messages about how bad I felt about how it went down.

I dunno, such a great game but I really never got some of the staff members. I remember my first day as staff I was like 'hi' to Nessalin, and told him I work in network engineering, thinking I could be of assistance in running the tech side of poo poo too and he goes 'I don't loving care about your life.'

Then I met him at an Imm gathering and he's a fat, pasty long-haired and quiet-spoken nerd. I'll never understand superiority complexes from Mud immortals.

RE: Armageddon

I just started playing again and the nostalgia overload is high. It's been about 5 years.

What are some of the recent changes that are pissing people off? I've read a lot of comments like 'I am unhappy with where the game is going so I am quitting' but I'm not sure what they are referring to.

I can't believe they have skill level indicators now. That was anathema to everything they used to do.

What's the defense nerf? Can a ranger do anything solo anymore with all the bash spam people are talking about?

What other things are different from 5 years ago that I'm going to hate now?

The better of the two Allanaki templars wears literally Tuluki whore outfits, fucks elves, and doesn't torture people. That's the better Templar. She also uses OOC info, and twists poo poo around, with AIM-interaction bullshit.

Jesus Christ. If even half of what you say is accurate that's ridiculous. Though everyone talked about Ihsahn as if he was the greatest templar ever but I watched that fucker get an email from me when I was a storyteller (and he was too) letting him know one of my nobles was going to be instructed to try to maniuplate Ihsahn through seducing him. He replies in an email 'Ihsahn will not be controlled.' Then he kills the noble the next day.

I dunno I guess your example is just more glaringly heinous than the other but abuse and that poo poo has always been rampant. The noble he killed was awesome, too. She used to pass the time during boring tavern conversations fantasizing about being kidnapped by handsome raiders. She was a loving riot.

Sanvean was always the rudder of that game - is she only on the periphery now?

The thing that always bugged me about getting banned from Armageddon is that I really had a high standard I kept for myself for roleplay. If I got hurt hunting I would roleplay being hurt for the rest of the RL day or more. If I saw something lying on the ground in a room that had a description of being crowded with people I wouldn't just run and pick it up. I put my characters in some pretty bad situations on purpose because it felt like that was the realistic thing to do.

I wasn't God's gift to roleplay but I could emote the gently caress out of that game and I never abused poo poo.

But between mouthing off to Nessalin one too many times and an unfortunate copy and paste accident in the IRC room (it is ridiculously easy to fat finger a copy/paste of a putty screen and paste a conversation where someone is telling you all about how the transgender immortal got people to pee on him/her at the APM) and the fact that my ex-wife was talking ill about me to every other staffmember I got a really bad rep. Though, to her credit, she did apologize to me for that later but by then the damage was done. I'm not innocent, I've made my mistakes but compared to a lot of the poo poo that went down I'm a goddamn saint.

quote:

Enjoy your nostalgia while it lasts.

I'm trying to tell myself to stick to playing it as a desert survival roleplay game, cause that is what I enjoy the most and what involves the least amount of the sort of stuff that will necessitate immortal interaction.

Sanvean is gone, almost if not entirely. And I guess I decided I'd give it another try, because why the gently caress not. We'll see how it ends up, I'm just going to avoid the elffucking Templar by playing in the opposite city-state.

Too bad nothing will ever happen in the game due to a near 100% burnout.

It's been a solid week and no approval for my GDB app. I don't care I just login and play my Byn dwarf a little, drop some crazy rear end thinks for anyone who might be watching and logout. I really just want to stay on the periphery.

The poo poo starts going south when you start playing a character who has to interact with clan imms, gets big into politics, etc, imo. That's when people get all pissy.

I've started a character on Armageddon, but I've yet to really be sucked in. The boneheadedness of the parsing irritates me (seriously, I can't abbreviate ANYTHING?!), and the apparent lack of things going on for random nobodies doesn't really encourage me to suffer through it.

I think the whole 'lack of things going on for random nobodies' is because it's hard to feel motivated to do stuff for characters who will go get killed in the 'rinth 2 hours after you get them started on something. At least that's the way it was for me when I was on staff. You're naturally going to want to focus your time on the characters who have shown they will survive.

There's the obvious 'join the Byn' answer but I really don't like how a lot of the Byn schedule equates to 'roleplay poo poo you would be too bored to do IRL let alone on a MUD.'

No, I know what you mean, it's just, there's not even anyone in the Gaj at the times I've checked, and I've tried to check in at different times.

Weird, last week everytime I went to the Gaj there were 3-5 people in there.

I know they've been taking noble/merchant apps, I wonder if the inevitable 'new family member players hire everyone and decimate the independent population' thing takes place.

There's almost always like 5 Bynners on but it's the whole 'do I walk to the Gaj to roleplay for 10 minutes or just afk and do something else until the next morning' thing.

I wonder if it is the same deal, clans becoming insular and chilling together in their own facilities.

My best friend is blind and he doesn't know a single blind user who uses voice input.

I don't know why you would. JAWS or whatever screen reader they are using tells them what they are typing as they type it. Conversely with voice input you'd have to say it, wait for it to get entered and then wait for your screen reader to read it back to you to tell you if it was right or not.
