I know this was a page or two ago, but I gotta say, probably the best club system i've heard in San Francisco is at 222. Super sketchy neighborhood, but they have some phenomenal nights, with fantastic DJ's. And turbosound. I hang around with a crew of house-heads in SF, and they either end up there or play there quite a bit. My favorite is Jeno and Garth with back2back (sadly, garth is moving to LA soon...)

I haven't been there before, but if its a house venue I might need to make it out there. Have you played at Ruby? It's out of this world, back when I was doing vocal sets I caught myself thinking "holy poo poo this is an awesome system" but it is very bro-heavy

No, never played at Ruby, I'm very much just getting my start. But they definitely have a lot of house events at 222. No way back, after sunset, back2back, forward, bionic. And at least whenever i've been there, it hasnt been bro-ish. I live in the far north (Chico) so I only make it to SF every month or 2. Slo-mo house is my taste of choice these days, although I still do enjoy the occasional speaker raping of electro.

One of my favorite acts at the moment are D-Pulse, a 5 piece from Russia. I first randomly discovered these guys back in 2006 while on a spree on Beatport, and have been looking for mixes and tracks by these guys ever since. Unbelievable mix of groove, funk, and atmospherics and deep, DEEP melodies make these guys so enjoyable to listen to.
http://www.myspace.com/dpulseband

Check out Prekrasna, and their Snowfall in Slowmotion Mix pt. 1. Their other tracks and productions are just as lush too.
And while listening to a mix they did back in March, I managed to spot another gem in their "3/15/2010 In The Mix" mix. None other than another producer I discovered around the same time I found about D-Pulse:
D-Pulse In The Mix 3/15/2010
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YJQSA95A

At about 21:00 minutes in, I was OBSESSED about IDing this track, and someone was kind enough to provide a tracklist: Alex Douche - Second Track. This guy is money too, with a distinctive groove laden, melody saturated, emotionally injected style, I've been hooked on his productions and was delighted to find out that my favorite song at the moment was produced by none other than Alex Douche himself.
http://www.myspace.com/alexdouche

Another Russian duo, Acos Coolkas. Very lush and laidback "space house". Check out their "Warm Layers of Atmospheres" mix, for this is where I first heard Prekrasna. Their productions are jaw dropping gorgeous as well. "Miracle" is their best known track, but they have been churning out productions consistently while maintaining their level of quality high and keeping true to their distinctive sound.
http://www.myspace.com/projectacoscoolkas

Craig Smith blew my mind a couple years back with his 6th Borough Blend. A mix named after his 6th Borough Project moniker, this was my first exposure to "slo mo house". I still listen to this mix today. Timeless. All of his productions are awesome too.
http://www.filefactory.com/file/a1b67he/n/Craig_Smith_-_A_6th_Borough_Blend.mp3

Last but not least, The Revenge. 1/2 of the 6th Borough Project. Graeme Clarke is the man at the moment. Ridiculous talent in mixing up funk, soul, and pounding grooves. His Beats In Space mix should provide ample evidence of his skills:
http://soundcloud.com/the-revenge/the-revenge-beats-in-space-mix
On A Whole New Level Of Funk, most definitely :)

Yeah, he's playing the Catalyst. I've never been to DJ sets there, but I've heard bad things. The venue itself is awesome, but it's flooded to the brim with rolling prostitots. The age limit is 16+ and they sometimes don't really check ID for the DJ shows, so you end up with a lot of little kids walking around gnashing their jaws into oblivion.

The sound setup is awesome, though, and the other DJs supporting him are pretty good. I've heard John Beaver play before, and I enjoyed his show.

Ya I cant imagine what a DJ Set is like there, since the venue is so small. Especially for a DJ like Benassi, where it seems like he would thrive off a 50,000 plus stadium gig.

Also, the crowd could be really hit or miss. I'm predicting half UCSC students a third of underage kiddies, and round off the rest with gang bangers. Let us know how it goes though.

That was pretty much true up until recently.

We've kind of had a boost in the scene recently. Syndey Blu, Hatiras, Deadmau5, MSTRKRFT, Wolfgang Gartner, Benny Benassi, and LMFAO among others have all played one or more shows within the past couple years, among many others. I know those are kind of generic names for the scene for the most part, but it's getting better. Apparently, despite the small size of Newfie-land and its venues, we've gotten a reputation for having great shows and apparently word is spreading that it's fun to do shows here. Unfortunately, our small size doesn't make us an attractive venue for any major tour dates mind you.

Deadmau5 in particular seemed to love Newfoundland, and he did something that made me think the flak he gets for being a dick is unwarranted. He played a show which, unfortunately, the promoters jacked the price up for (In comparison to what is expected in Newfoundland), and many people were upset over it. When he couldn't leave Newfoundland following the Junos because of the volcanic ash fiasco (which caused many other celebrities to bitch and moan about being stuck in Newfoundland), he decided to host another show. Knowing some people were pissed about the price the promoters of his first show set, he put on a show for only the basic cover charge of the club ($15).

I dunno, I thought it was kind of nice :shobon:.

It's funny but all the hipsterati I know and associate with have been deep into EDM for at least 10 years, and all they've been doing is following trends from acid house to London hardcore to big beat to big shiny house legends like AVH to current targets such as electrohouse and dubstep, and what we've gathered is that people who seemingly use hipsters as a scapegoat are usually knee-deep into the same artists as the ones they defile with their social slurs.

It really has. I like a bunch of music all over the place and honestly some of the most fun times I've had are when really popular acts are playing. I had never heard of Swedish House Mafia before I saw them live at Ultra but gently caress if I didn't have fun listening to their stuff there. Electronic music seems to be turning into a hipster-filled pissing contest and sadly this thread is completely ruined because of it. You can't discuss the acts that appeal to a wider audience because certain posters just come in here and start up giant flame wars and wave their e-penises around about how they were on stage with Diplo.

Can we please just agree to have a "if you don't like something shut up and be constructive?" rule? Like, "Hey, this person new to the whole electronic music scene likes deadmau5, instead of starting a flame war maybe I could suggest other things that might appeal to this person?"

Or yeah just create a popular electronic music thread.

The Okanagan valley is going through a similar boost. Almost all the DJs you just named have been to Kelowna recently and sometimes Penticton or Vernon even get something. Admission is way more expensive than it is in big cities though, as I imagine it must be in Newfoundland.

JFK is the one who headlined St. John's, and his show was fun. But I heard from (I think) Their 'Essential Mix' on BBC Radio that they prerecord their shows for the most part and just do minor tweaking and effects live. I think JFK might be the more prolific producer though, as he has a number of independent remixes.

As for cover... Well... $10-15 dollars would be the typical cover for any 'event' happening at that particular club on a weekend, which is one of the more expensive because the cover encompasses 3 clubs, and typically the afterparty club cover as well. It is one of the more expensive covers in St. John's for sure.

I said I liked it. I am not hating on Kaskade. Besides, I can have preferences without resorting to outright childish bashing. 'gently caress Deadmau5' and 'This music is poo poo' is a lot different from 'Hey, that's alright, but to me...' and following it up with a specific statement about my preferences.

Maybe you think I'm splitting hairs, but I didn't say people shouldn't be stating their preferences.
