Okay, newbie here, so be nice to me. (I haven't read the whole thread, it's hard to follow for someone like me, sorry for that.) I want to get into house music, but am having a hard time. Basically, I used to intensely dislike anything electronic, before realising that there was stuff out there I do actually like. I just don't know precisely what it is yet, because I know so little electronic music. Basically I suspect that: - what I dislike is "electro-pop", generally poppy songs, songs made for dancing only, "immature" trance stuff (immature being my impression of it, not intended to offend people who like that kind of music). - what I like is "deep house", generally slower songs I guess, more intense-sounding, melancholic, songs also for "chilling" and not just dancing, something like that. For instance, a couple of songs that I like, from my very small and arbitrary "collection" (don't laugh, I'm a newbie!): - Paul Kalkbrenner - Sky and Sand: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=do5-PiJeKmA - Ida Corr vs. Fedde le Grand - Let Me Think About It (club remix) (I don't think this needs a link) Am I right that what I like is "deep house"? Could you recommend some artists/songs I would like? And a way to get into this kind of music? I would greatly appreciate it! Added: I'm kinda liking what Lysis posted above on this page.... Thanks a lot for the suggestions, Threatis and Hammsturabi, I'm sampling those and so far I'm very pleased. Keep 'em coming, please! I've been wondering a bit why I like that kind of music. My own "background" is classic rock. I can see some similarities, though. I think this kind of house shares some qualities with psychedelic, "trippy", chant-like (for lack of better term) rock such as The Doors' "The End" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b26BD5KjH0 ), The Velvet Underground's "Heroin" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xcwt9mSbYE ), and much of early-to-mid Pink Floyd such as "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3R2PgMiTvw ), in which for instance repetition is an important part, but only in order to create the atmosphere that is the true goal of the song. Of course, late Pink Floyd had some "disco"ish elements, and house (I gather) began in the same kind of places as disco did, so that's another connection... Also, I gather that artists such as the Doors and Pink Floyd get sampled a lot by electronic artists. Edit: added youtube links Regression fucked around with this message at 21:15 on Jan 15, 2010 |

Threatis posted:This music is pretty much the definition of music meant for consumption and is produced in a way that is going to be enjoyable. Therefore, you like it. Perhaps (though you make it sound so bad! ), but the thing is that I used to be so allergic to electronic music of all sorts. Oh, well, I guess we all change over time. (By the way, a lot of psychedelic rock wasn't really made to be enjoyable - it was very unpolished.)

Kerk posted:Just threw together a classic house mix with some nu-disco stuff at the end. Let me know what you think! Thanks for this, I enjoyed it, it my own newbish way! Do you mix stuff that is slightly less dancy/disco-y, a bit slower and more atmospheric?
