MrSargent posted:Really looking forward to Oliver on Friday. Has anyone seen them live before? Classixx and Shy Girls are opening and I don't know too much about them. U-Tern is a DJ's DJ. If you like their sound, you'll probably enjoy his set (if it's just him). If they're doing a live set, I don't know what to expect. I've heard Classixx is sleepy live.

OniKun posted:Are you ever going to play another set in Sacramento? I dug the last set of yours I caught, and we get no good music here. I might have banished myself after being a little bit of a baby for SEMF two years ago. I haven't had much since then (except the yacht rock DJ gig which was really fun). Basically, they wanted me to play 30 mins at 10:00pm at Harlows and it wasn't worth it to me, so I bailed. They didn't like that. Haven't heard much since, and not sure who the major players are now that I'm gone.

Mike_V posted:That is a reasonable list for Las Vegas. Frankly, it might be a little hard to research DJs since any respectable DJ isn't going to be playing Vegas in the first place. I'm sure if the place doesn't go under, they won't be posting those rules after a while since they'll have an established stable of non-bro DJs. It worked for me, I'll be going there in a few weeks

WAFFLEHOUND posted:Here's something, does anyone else think the rise of Big Room House is going to lead to an Acid revival? It seems to be kind of pointing that way, a lot of bigger artists have been making some 303-heavy tracks for a while but Big Room's influence has seen Fatboy Slim back in the charts again for the first time in a long time. I don't think so. I think DJ Snake type of stuff is next up unfortunately.

Not to jump on that bandwagon or anything, but I've been sampling a ton of avant garde synth poo poo lately and put this out about a month ago, kind of similar to what you're talking about. https://soundcloud.com/melee/melee-space-trash

Mike_V posted:There are thousands of great disco mixes, I don't see what sets it apart from a Danny Tenaglia, Frankie Knuckles, or Francois K mix. It's enjoyable mind you, but nothing out of the ordinary. The shorter edits and effects chain (everything sounds just a tad more compressed) definitely make it feel more modern than something like Francois K. Predictably, I loving love it.

Just listened to Fire - it's really interesting. You can tell that it's a homage record (like AVD), but the aesthetic seems more faithful than RAM's, which I think had similar aspirations. It's the polar opposite technically, it sounds dirty and saturated, like something that was produced on tape. I, personally, prefer that to the super clean sound that DP seems to be going for.

MrSargent posted:Speaking of DP, what are people's thoughts on the two tracks they released with The Weeknd? The drums on "Starboy" are phenomenal, but the rest of the track is just dull. The piano sounds uninspired and the vocal just does absolutely nothing. "I Feel It Coming" is much better, but it just sounds like an attempt to milk the Weeknd/MJ comparisons - like "Can't Feel My Face" part two. I'm just not feeling it that much. It's really indicative of the popstar transformation that they've attempted with The Weeknd over the past record and a half. It's less risky and way more toned down. Obviously, I think "Tell Your Friends" is far and away his best work, and I think he sounds better over tracks with a little more edge (or, alternatively, stuff like "Often"). This other stuff just seems safe.

Camel Camus posted:Hey I've always thought that Daft Punk's "Prime Time of Your Life," sampled "Pony" from "Ginuwine" but I can't find any documentation about it. It's kind of a generic vocal phrase that they used I guess, but the sound of Prime Time seems identical to the one in Pony, just pitched up, what do you all think? I'm not sure but I don't think so. I think the Yeah in Prime Time of Your Life is a thick layer of talkbox + vocoder + another synth. It's a texture that's all over that album. Timbaland did something similar for Pony, so they have similar formants (along with them both saying "yeah").
