Great radio show, this owns, san francisco owns. Post more bro.

Thanks a lot! I change the style of the show quite a bit based on who my guest is, so it doesn't always fit this thread. I cover everything from house and techno to hip hop, bass, footwork, and club music. I usually spend more time in the bass thread and the techno thread but I'll make sure to pop in here more often!

For those who didn't listen to the show, I'm changing stations and I'll be starting up again June 6th playing a two hour show every Wednesday at 10 Eastern / 7 Pacific on RWD.FM and I'm kicking it off with Cosmic Revenge (Embassy, Frite Nite, Pelican Fly, Fortified). I try not to spam my poo poo around here too often, so if you liked the show and want to stay in the loop you can follow me on Twitter or like my new Facebook page.

I mean, in retrospect I don't think that Justice - Cross was that great either. I don't think any of the OG house or techno crowd was wowed by it; it was people like me who were just starting to listen to dance music. The difference hasn't been a change in the music scene so much as a growth in my personal tastes. Music like that just beats you over the head, and I look for a lot more subtlety in my electronic music nowadays. You see the same thing happening today with Deadmau5, Skrillex, Swedish House Mafia, Avicii, and whoever else. Young kids eat it up while older house, techno, and dubstep fans try to distance themselves from that crowd. That right there is why I hadn't read this thread in years up until last week. There will always be people who are new to electronic music and eat that kind of poo poo up. Some of them will be SA posters, and there will always be a thread for them to talk about that stuff. Trying to force taste on people is just a waste of time.

Oh my god. You all totally ignored the substance of my post and latched on to the most irrelevant throwaway sentence. The last thing I wanted to do was spawn a page-long discussion about Justice. You guys are loving hopeless.

On a more positive note, I just discovered a new SF producer who goes by Avalon Emerson and makes a really interesting brand of weird, hypnotic, muted house perfect for the after party (or even the after after party). On top of that she has easily the most interesting artist bio that I've ever read. It's just this side of word salad but describes the aesthetics of her music perfectly:

Avalon Emerson posted:

Avalon Emerson will not transcend genre (the job of Cage and Prince and avocado pho), but her no-brow style might transcend the meta tags of your brain’s dumbass heart.

There’s a need to crunch the negative into a JPEG of a lotus, just like there’s a little Judith Butler swag in the breath of every repressed Mormon housewife fashion blogger.

Seriously though, if that is what people want then maybe we should just have a new NMD House thread or incorporate it into the new Techno/Tech House one. We're obviously not speaking the same language here.

It's definitely open to interpretation but it has to do with music (and things in general) not being defined by the labels that you put on them. I just thought it was funny but I see how it would seem pretty masturbatory if you took it seriously.

Post more acid please.

I'm no authority but generally acid doesn't have long buildups and drops like this. This tune is definitely inspired by acid but pulls a lot from modern electro-house and earlier BNR type stuff as well.

Now this. This is Acid:

If you're just getting into acid house I can't recommend this 2 CD compilation on Soul Jazz Records highly enough:

Acid: Can You Jack? (Chicago Acid And Experimental House 1985-95)
http://www.discogs.com/Various-Acid-Can-You-Jack-Chicago-Acid-And-Experimental-House-1985-95/master/69833

It has Maurice - This is Acid and Virgo - Go Wild Rhythm Track which were just posted along with plenty of other tracks that you really should own or at least know. The original vinyl release of a lot of these tunes would cost you more than the whole compilation. My favorite is the timeless classic Acid Crash by Tyree (http://youtu.be/ODS1Zt_6jIM).

On top of all of those great tunes the liner notes are fantastic and provide a lot of context. Goddamn, I sound like I'm selling one of those Time Life "Best of the 60s" box sets.

Edit: Oh, that third link in the previous post samples Lil Louis - Video Clash (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgSZrT1S33E) which is also in that compilation.

Where would one find tons of chicago/french/toronto house artists so I can listen to them?

Sometimes I like to use this website to find new artists: http://www.musicmaze.fm/

You put in an artist to start with and it gives you 6 related artists. Click one of those and you get 6 related to them, and so on. The music database is pretty poorly maintained though, and it tends to conflate artists with the same name. If you start with Art Department you'll notice that the Jamie Jones samples belong to Jamie Jones the R&B singer, not Jamie Jones the DJ and owner of Hot Creations. Regardless, it's still a powerful tool and I use it all the time when I'm outside of my areas of expertise.

Have you heard Storm Queen - It Goes On (http://youtu.be/-G2aOgvLv-c)? That was the first tune that came to mind but I could probably give some better recommendations if I had something more specific to go on. What do you look for in a house track? Any examples?

Harmony Funk - Can't Let You Go http://youtu.be/XIgYj5HMY0s
Audiojack feat Kevin Knapp - Stay Glued (FCL Weemix) http://youtu.be/8TpDPpCZwvE
Gerry Read - Bozza http://youtu.be/Hw-f-PwvOpY
Axel Boman - Purple Drank http://youtu.be/ywJlK8P1AiQ
Chaos In The CBD - Slab http://youtu.be/idvtFZ0HPZQ

I picked up a pair of Technics a month or so ago so I've been mostly spinning wax recently. Here are a couple that I've had on heavy rotation:

Robert Armani - Arrow
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFVwtU1eZEs
Originally released on the legendary Dance Mania Records and recently rereleased on a different compilation of the same name by the Rawax sublabel Chiwax. This is what happens when shuffling analog drum work meets shimmering pads and brilliant sampling.

The other one I wanted to pimp is the first physical release from Soo Wavey Records but isn't on discogs or youtube yet apparently. I think I bought the first copy from Groove Merchant in SF a couple weeks ago right after Vin Sol tweeted that he dropped them off. If you're into throwback analog house with a modern touch you should definitely keep tabs on Vin Sol, Matrixxman, and Robert Jeffrey. They're all playing at Monarch in SF on Sunday actually. I think it's some kind of gay or drag night but I'll be there regardless. I'll be the straight dude who is drinking too much.

Can you list a few more oldies / unknown tunes you've discovered like this? I'm going to force myself to listen to them and start appreciating house again.

Like a milk crime said, Dance Mania is great. There was a lot of great Chicago stuff on Trax as well. Here are a couple more just off the top of my head:
Armando - Morse Code https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TG0SvLb4yY
Lil Louis - Video Clash https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgSZrT1S33E

I checked when I got home and that Soo Wavey record that I was talking about is the Dirty Laundry EP. I still don't see anything about it online other than Vin's picture of a test pressing but here is another one of his recent tunes for DJ Haus' Unknown To The Unknown imprint in a similar throwback style:
Vin Sol - Edges of a Vortex https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckEUpfA8WjI

I don't think you're wrong about this stuff being a little boring when you hear it start to finish. Any kind of stripped down instrumental tune really only shines in a DJ set IMO. The same goes for footwork and club music.

My thoughts exactly. This is electrohouse garbage. Luckily you didn't waste too much time writing your post to go along with it.
