We get all the big names through here, and the older residents at the big clubs who do this for a living are all very much the same. We don't seem to have any younger underground talent or consistency, in both our local parties or our djs.

I'm just curious if other places are like this too. If I want to go to a small club and listen to some tunes its very hit or miss and you rarely see recurring names... unless you want to hit up a big venue on a residents night and hear all the same thing.

Oh, another related question, what are your city's popular local genres? What do you never hear at all?

I'm from Toronto and there's no represenation of my genre here.

Of course, I'm into synthpop, a scene which seems to be exclusive to northern Europe

So I posted a while back about putting together a nu-disco/elektropop show together (Fear of Tigers, The Magician, Tracasseur-type stuff). The problem is I myself am not a dj, nor do I know anyone who could dj such a show...so I'd have to hire someone. Because its a specific genre I'm targetting, I'd want input on the tracklist. Is this considered "bad form" when it comes to hiring a dj?

I suppose I could just present it as a particular music night, and not focus on the dj aspect at all, in which case I could just put a solid mix together...?

(this is in Toronto, if it matters)

Thats a good approach. Maybe I'll post something on CL asking about any djs interested in collaborating on putting together a nu-disco show. That sets the stage for the type of music, and that I'm looking to work together on it.
