Upon learning of her mother’s death, Lee returns home, hoping to attend the funeral, collect her inheritance, and return to her life; however her plans are thwarted when she is informed that her mother has named her the legal guardian and caregiver of her younger, mentally handicapped brother, Harvard who's disability has left him with the mind of a child. Making matters worse, she forced to contend with her estranged ex-husband, Tom, and Harvard’s devoted caregiver, Clara. Faced with the challenge of finding the best solution for each of them, Lee concludes that a mental institution is the best option for her brother and despite Tom and Clara’s protests, Lee delivers a confused and scared Harvard to the institution upstate. However, despite being set primarily within Harvard's imaginary world, the story and its main character, Lee, are forced to confront more than just bizarre creatures and monsters. Harvard Gardens addresses real world issues such as childhood abuse and trauma, parental neglect, abandonment, developmental disabilities, LGBT issues and mental health issues.
