Krylon is a great easy solution, but no matter what, it's paint and will flake off... not sure why yours is flaking so soon, but the only solution is to keep applying more thin layers. Did you degrease before spraying?

I did mine with five coats of Aluma-Hyde II, which is an air-cure epoxy and has held up really well so far through regular use.

You don't necessarily need to go absolutely bananas every time you clean. Do pay special attention to the gas port/block, however, particularly when shooting corrosive surplus.

In the case of the piston, don't worry about making it look shiny & new - it's going to constantly be dirty from firing, and so long as it can cycle properly it doesn't matter how it looks. Too much scraping can scratch the metal and actually promote rust instead of preventing it. Just take care to remove as much carbon from the piston face as possible (though note that the BOT guy is using a wire wheel, not a grinding stone).

Daskro, nice rifle - but why the perm brake?

Also, if you have a caliper, can you measure the height of the rail from the dust cover? It looks considerably lower than the DPH Beryl.

They are all visually similar - think an elongated birdcage, like the one found on the Norinco Type 84 (or the G3/CETME). Difficult to tell from the site, but they look just a bit shorter than the Tantal brake.

The Modified version is a bit longer to accept AK bayonets; the Conical version is slightly flared out on the end, though it's very subtle. Not as dramatic as the conical brake on an Enfield No5, for example.

True, but Rat was swapping a lot of parts - Ultimak gas tube, Miso-modded bolt carrier, etc.. It may not have played nice with those things, but if you just want a "standard" AK the Lancaster should be fine.

The sidefolder is terrific, but unless you see yourself carrying a rifle in & out of a vehicle or are severely limited in your size of gun case, it's essentially a fancy novelty.

However - I can't speak to the SGLs, but the Arsenal SLRs are ridiculously accurate... not just for an AK, but for any military-pattern autoloader.

Try to center the front sight drum and see if that corrects your point of aim/point of impact problem. NCStar makes a cheap, decent little sight tool; alternately, you can summon the spirits of the Soviet Union and just whack on the thing with a hammer & wood dowel.

To check if your FSB is actually canted, unload/clear the gun and look from the muzzle toward the receiver (breakin' the rules! ). See if the FSB/gas block are in line with each other and with the rear sight base.

My own experience with a 7.62x39 sporter (would also apply to a 5.56 gun) is that adapting it to accept standard/surplus mags requires a good bit of fitting & drilling and some riveting and a bit of cusses & luck. Obviously a gun that has only proprietary mags (like the 12ga & .308 versions) wouldn't need this extra work.

Someone else tried RIT on their guards, though I recall it didn't turn out as well as he'd hoped. xpost from the photo thread:

quote:

Sprayed five light coats of matte black Aluma-Hyde II and let it set for a week - same method I used on the handguards last year and those haven't chipped yet. There's some wear on the usual heavy-traffic parts of the gun (around the selector, the recoil rod endpiece, the sling loop, etc) but I've been impressed with AHII on everything I've applied it to so far.

The Krebs rear sight is great, a huge improvement over the original. Aside from the obvious benefit of a semi-ghost ring instead of a notch, the aperture is sized so that it lines up with the front sight ring - easy to tell if you're sight picture is off.
