Every time the commentary team would go on about how much the ladies can't resist Lex Lugar, while he was in the ring posing looking confused like a dog that's been bred too much, I'd crack up laughing.

BGrifter posted:It’s been fun seeing that they actually did a pretty competent job of building Luger up as the big babyface in 1997. Most of my memories of him were as the punchline he eventually became. It’s a little startling just how over he was. Crowds went apeshit for him just standing in the ring posing. Many years ago, I read somewhere that Lex Luger looks like a catfish, and that's all I can think about whenever I see him

The American Dream posted:What was the point of that. I thought it was odd having hogan fight lugar that night when he had a title shot 6 days away. Was it just to pop the ppv buyrate? Primarily to pop a rating for Nitro but it probably had a positive impact on the buy rate as well.

The Luger title win was on Nitro 100 and they wanted to make it a really big deal. They had a chance for a record rating (which they got) vs a Raw with a delayed start. It's one of those things that sure didn't help Luger but they had a long term story and kind of needed to pay his off too. if anything it hurt the PPV since who was going to buy it to see Hogan likely win it back?

The Luger period where Jimmy Hart cheats for him and he tries to pretend he doesn't condone it so he can stay friends with Sting is loving sublime. Lex Luger could be really, really funny as an egocentric heel.

The best was when they would come out for tag matches and sting would be smiling and high fiving as they walked down the aisle. And Lex would scowl until sting would look back and lex would start acting like a face for a few seconds until sting would turn back around.

Lex Luger was very cool in WCW and my favorite part was his selling OWW! EYEAH! WHOA!

It's a shame that they managed somehow to hit on a good gimmick for Luger in the late 90s with the "Total Package", where he got to be a straight up heel and was legit funny and entertaining in promos, but by then his body was shot (and of course it was the Russo era anyway.)

Lex Luger discovering he can play air guitar on his abs is also a really nice, subtle gag. It's really a shame he was so misused for so long and by the time he was getting used right his body was breaking down.

The reason why he's doing that is when Lex gets nervous he instinctively grabs his dick and won't let go, so he'd just have his hand down his trunks during interviews They told him to start doing things with his hands so we get air guitar

Luger and Sting was one of those things where there can't be a resolution. Luger and Sting is eternal. As they both stare down whatever afterlife may exist Luger will hit Sting with a chair and help him up afterwards.

Luger's been credited with two very important additions to Jim Crockett Promotions in the 1980s: - Having an agent negotiate his contract - Introducing wrestlers to tanning beds

I loved Lex Luger, when I was a kid. I remember he won the title from Ric Flair with the backbreaker but that loving athletic commission stopped the match due to blood flow. In my mind's eye I can still see Luger jumping up and celebrating. It was on some compilation WCW show, and it was amazing. I loved the bionic elbow, and he was an awesome babyface when he just trundled the baddies.

He also would say, when asked what he would do to heels, 'Maybe a little of this' and flex and I would feel that Here Was A Badass. It helped that he was basically by far the most ripped dude in NWA/WCW at the time. Barry Windham and Ric and the lads were great but I confidently believed he could pull most of their heads off if he had their necks in his hands and somewhere to brace himself against.

I think one of my favorite Luger moments was back after Flair got the book, when he turned heel. I forget the exact details but it was basically something where he went "if being the U.S. champion makes me the #1 contender to Flair's world title, then I'm going to go win the U.S. championship" and proceeded to do so in true heel fashion. Not sure why, but I just found that to be one of those little enjoyable "hey, that actually makes sense" kinda moments that are so rare in pro wrestling.

I still can't believe no major stars have taken the rack as their own these days. People always go APESHIT for the rack, naturally, because it rules.

I am curious where the idea the torture rack is bad for the back and neck comes from. It's more difficult to maintain than a fireman's carry but the general idea is the same. I can't think of anyone who used the move reporting neck or back injuries because of it. Luger didn't have any I remember, Atlantis the same, and Nakanishi can't move but his neck injury wasn't because of the rack it was because of a botch. The only person I can think of with neck problems is Nikki Bella and that's because she did the stupid drop.

The natural born thrillers squashed both him and Luger and I was sad.
