I got some adapters since I'll need them regardless. Figure I've spent enough at the moment on the machine, not going to bother dumping more for a new Wacom since the other's are fine.

It sucks a little, but it's not bad. Amazon Basics has USB-C to USB-A adapters that work great and are cheaper than the Apple versions. I have 4 of them and a year later I still can find 2 in a pinch.

You're going to realize about a week after you get your laptop that you never used those ports that often after-all - providing you're not using it docked. If you're using it docked and need monitors + keyboards + mice then it sucks a little more.

I still have two Firewire external drives and a Firewire iPod. The drives still work, the iPod, not so much.

I need a Wacom plugged in at all times. Often an external i pull stuff from. So at least one if not 2 USB slots are always in use. But I did buy some converters/a hub thingy and I'll probably be fine. I was more considering the newer tablet with the bluetooth to avoid converters altogether.

The Case of Martin Heidegger, Philosopher and Nazi Part 2: The Cover-up
Anybody with a more traditional background ever use Wacom tablets with the overhand grip?

like so

I've recently started drawing with pencils using the overhand grip and it's really good, wish I'd learned this sooner. Feels a bit like by giving up the familiar arc of the wrist you also give up certain habitual lines and stylistic shorthands. As if you draw more with intent and will and less of habit. Especially if you have a large drawing surface so you can really move your shoulder.

Trying it with my Cintiq I find my hand's a lot lighter this way as well. I used to have to really adjust the pressure sensitivity in the settings to get a light touch with the writing/tripod grip. However the shape of the stylus is such that you can't really do any of the low angle side of the pencil style techniques. Feels like you'd need a really long custom tip for the stylus for this.

Anyways I'm curious if anybody else has tried this and how did it work out?

I've tried to do this with the Cintiq stylus with no success. With an Apple pencil it works great.

BARK BARK BARK
So I turned on my 22 inch Cintiq a few weeks ago only to find that it's completely borked and not in a way that's easy to fix. According to Wacom support it'll be close to $1000 Canadian to get repaired so I'm in the market for cheaper alternative. Does anyone have any experience with Huion/Ugee/other models of LCD tablets compared to Wacom's? I'm not too picky about the size, in fact the Cintiq was a little too big for the space I have, but I'd rather not use an ipad or other handheld tablet. I'm running a Windows 8 PC if that makes a difference.

I just finally bit the bullet and purchased actual photoshop cc, it worked good the first day but now the second time using it I'm having issues with it using my tablet monitor. If I'm zoomed in enough on the image that the scroll bar pops up to let me move around it and I draw to draw/erase/etc a line with my stylus, instead it will scroll up and down the image instead. Looking at the toolbar when it happens it isn't switching to the hand tool or anything when I click and if I just tap the stylus quickly instead of dragging it or use it zoomed out all the way so it's fit to screen, it doesn't scroll. Is this a normal problem?? I tried restarting everything and it still happens. Doesn't happen at all in clip studio paint.

i have a ugee monitor, for the money it is pretty good(aside from the above issues which I've never had with any other program). I would say the only issues I've had with it are the cursor accuracy goes down noticeably the further away from the center of the screen you are (it hasn't been a very noticeable problem in day to day use, the 22 inch screen helps mitigate that) and my specific unit has a little backlight bleed but I don't think every unit would have that same defect since there is a spot where the frame is a little warped on the bottom so I think it was caused by shipping damage or something. It's been long enough since the last time I used a cintiq that I dunno if my experience with them compares to the current models but for like a third the price of the comparable size cintiq it seems good.

Technical question for y'all: I recently got Clip Studio Ex for super cheap and while it's quite a lot more than SAI, I'm having an odd issue. SAI will not re-snap my pen's point if I move it off the detectable area off my Huion 610. When I have CSP on, if I move my pen off the tablet too much, it will snap the point to the center of the screen. Is there a way to do it like SAI so I don't have to keep contact with my tablet at all times?

while people are paying attention to this thread, what's the most ergonomic kinda chair to use while working at a digital art workstation? I have my tablet monitor mounted on an arm which makes it nice and positionable, but i think the big back part on my regular rear end office computer chair makes it hard for me to get good arm movement. Is there like a good ergonomic stool type thing that would work well? Something with a small/no back piece so it doesn't get in the way of my arm? A couple of the art rooms at my school had those nice rear end steelcase leap drafting stools but I know I won't be able to afford one of those/I'm not sure something that tall would fit well at my computer desk

Steelcase is worth the money, I have the regular Leap chair and it's been fantastic. But they are expensive if you buy new.

Look in your area for vendors of remaindered office furniture- places that buy up the furniture from companies that go under. You may be able to get a deal that way. I got my chair half off the retail price; it was still expensive, but much more in my price range.

My girlfriend got this office chair from Ikea that she likes- the back is narrow, and the arm rests are there, but minimal, so they don't get in the way of my arms but I can use them when I want to.

It's weird I remember the chairs having the steelcase logo on them but looking at pictures online the herman miller aeron drafting stools look way closer to the ones they had so now I'm not so sure. But if the steelcase one is as comfy as my old rear end steelcase 451 I know it would also be good.

They definitely seem like they're worth the price, just really hard to justify when I still don't make much money doing art to justify expensive set up costs. I've seen people recommend that ikea chair for affordable but good option, maybe I'll just go to ikea and sit in it and some others to see if they work how I want them; I really don't like arm rests and wrenched them off of my current chair so if it comes without that option that would be cool. I think I basically just want something that's smaller in every dimension, I'm realizing that the actual seat of my chair sticks out too far which encourages me to slouch really bad, and the back is so wide I can't move my drawing arm like I want. Something like one of these looks like it might match that, although the first one isn't all that cheap if I'm trying to go super budget. The steelcase stool was like $600 online so getting close to half that and it would probably be worth it to spend the extra to look for a used one I guess.

My Intuous tablet-pen doesn't track small movements, it's really aggravating. I can draw circles within a thumb-sized area forever and nothing appears until I move the pen out of that area. And when i make larger marks on the screen there's a delay until I move the pen a certain distance. Does anybody know what's causing this?

My laptop crashed for whatever reason, and since coming back, my Intuos 5 has been completely hosed:

-Settings were gone/reset to default
-Cannot scroll with the pen any more
-Clicking text boxes brings up Windows handwriting window
-Circles when clicking despite turning effects off
-Random one but click/dragging the scroll bar in Spotify is reversed with pen. As in, if you click and drag down as you usually would to scroll the bar down, nothing happens. Scroll up, and it goes down
-Click and drag won't select or highlight, it only highlights once let go, but tapping again deselects everything
-Using pen to click tabs seems to cause slowdown? Can that happen? Firefox is fine using the touchpad, but freezes if pen is used
-Lagging slightly in Photoshop, but maybe that was usual. openCanvas was fine. No zoom/scroll issues like reported over a month ago

I've restarted, reinstalled drivers, etc. but that did nothing so I tried searching around. Most issues cropped up a month ago, and were supposedly solved by an update around then, so that doesn't apply to me now. That was also a slightly different issue (something about scrolling when zoomed?) so not sure it's the same cause as my issues.

I'm reading about how Windows Ink is the issue and disabling it (if possible) might fix the issue, but it also removes pen sensitivity, which I want for drawing programs. I'll keep looking but does anyone have any ideas or know how to fix this?

Edit: After reinstalling drivers, checking for Windows updates (it was updated), restarting, I unchecked "use Windows Ink" in the Wacom settings centre. It appears to be working fine now, though I'm sure that didn't work last night. Pressure sensitivity is still there in Photoshop and openCanvas, zoomed in to test and it works normally

Currently I'm using Huion H610 Pro, and I've never used monitor tablets so I have no way to compare whether it'll be worth the money, I also have no way of testing it in retail shops before I buy one.

I have three regrets
The first is to be born in Joseon.
This has been bothering me for a while and it just occurred to me I could just ask some other opinions. How many different brushes do you guys normally use? Because I've got like 300 or something from brush sets, many of which I purchased with genuine money, but when I'm actually drawing seriously, 95% of the time I just fall back on the most basic of all round ones and a couple that are essentially slight variations on the same thing. I love that brush and it's super versatile and it's not like I can't do what I need to do with it, but I can't help but feel like I'm missing out. Do you guys have a way different approach?

Corollary, every now and then I do try to branch out but tend to feel uncomfortable with other stuff, and one of my things is that I still haven't settled on THE RIGHT pressure curve; I tweak it constantly, and some days it feels just right but other days it doesn't at all. Right now in Clip Studio it's like this:

Do you guys change yours a lot, or have something really different? The main thing I find is if I'm trying to do lineart (which used to be my staple but definitely isn't now) I need a different one than when I'm painting. I definitely ran into the same issue on iPad though and my old tablet so I know it's not just faulty tablet drivers or something. I'm doing a reinstall of my computer in a few weeks (for unrelated reasons) so I figure I'll start settings from the ground up to see if I can get more comfortable but I figure it wouldn't hurt to ask. Also I illustrate professionally (albeit sometimes maybe I shouldn't be) so I'm pretty sure it's not that I'm just like, crap, or something.

somewhat relatedly, what internet places do you guys go to for art discussions these days? much as I love our fair SA, the art talks are not as alive here as they once were so I feel like I miss a lot of stuff

Pen pressure curve chat

I find that my hands shift behavior every drawing session, sometimes about once an hour or so while drawing. I just re-calibrate it every time I start and then re-calibrate it every hour or so into working when I start to notice things are going awry.

Basically, your entire upper body posture and fatigue level affects pen pressure. You're better off using the "Use Multiple Strokes" or whatever calibration option and doing a repetitive process to re-calibrate it (I usually do the same number of circles and lines).

Can't go wrong with a hard round. For painting and coloring, I pretty much exclusively use a hard round an mess with opacity to layer. Linework, though, I tend to branch out a lot more. My favorite right now is an ink brush I downloaded from some free photoshop brush site a long time ago, it splotches and bleeds a bit like a real pen on softer paper and I like the random imperfections it adds to my linework. I've also been experimenting a lot with Kyle's brushes lately, some long-term contract work I'm doing has needs of lots of tiny marker or watercolor images and using those brushes has made my job a lot easier.

mastodon.art seems like a pretty cool place to chat art.
