So I've been thinking of getting a tablet to work with as I learn graphic design. So many people say to sketch out ideas and such, but I'd honestly have an easier time doing it straight on the computer and that's what I usually end up doing anyway. With the mouse.

I'd been recommended this in the past here but I just wanted to check and see if there might be a better choice for my first drawing tablet. I will say that the one I linked fits into my budget, I can't look towards something too much more expensive.
I would look towards this for that kind of money. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Huion-H610-Pro-Graphics-Compatible/dp/B00GIGGS6A
Beats bamboo that you linked, especially it being refurbished and all.

While I have a wacom bamboo myself (previously had intuous 5 medium so I have some point of comparison) - I'll buy huion h610 pro in a month or two, simply because it's the price of wacom bamboo in my country (cheaper in fact), not to mention all the facts about larger surface area and pen pressure.
I only sketch myself, can't say I draw or paint these days and I definitely miss larger surface area, it helps a lot with accurate sketching, you don't have to zoom in as much.

Wacom has driver issues, always had, I reinstall drivers about once or twice a month and that's the usual deal for me. Sometimes pen pressure drops for a second or two, sometimes you need to reboot or reinstall drivers completely, so if anything Huion has less issues from all the reviews I've read.

And if Frenden (http://frenden.com/post/87110791272/huion-h610-pro-h610-k58-graphics-tablet-review) has line quality that good and uses it as his main tablet while having ALL the tablets available to him (including much more expensive ones like wacom companion, cintiq, Yiynova, etc) then hell, it's good enough for professionals and superior to Wacom in my eyes.

Bought H610 Pro after using wacom bamboo for so long, this thing is enormous compared to it, haven't had any problems and well worth the price.

1) Are there any recommended settings as far as sensitivity, etc. goes for tablets like this? I'm mainly using Illustrator and GIMP for my art so far, but I haven't gotten a firm grip on what types of brushes I should use, what sort of settings I should have for the tablet itself, and so on. Is there a handy guide for setting this sort of stuff up?

2) I'm having a lot of trouble doing circular motions and smooth curves compared to paper. I suspect it's because of the fact that I tended to use an "artist's grip" (where you hold the pencil like a wine glass) as opposed to the "writer's grip" that digital tablets seem to favor. Any recommendations around this, or is it just a learning process to adjust to doing circles with the writer's grip?
1) I use default, works like a charm and unlike Wacom back in the day I didn't have to adjust pressure curve in some manner.
2) I encourage anyone not used to tablets take a look at this:

Are there any good online apps for collaborative drawing with friends?
Preferably mac based.

I swear a while back I saw some artists (maybe shmorky?) do this, but I can't remember what they were using. Might even have just been google hangouts or Skype.
http://drawpile.net/download/
https://awwapp.com/
http://flockdraw.com/

I only ever used flockdraw and awwapp, so can't vouch for drawpile but it looks good and it's multiplatform

Edit: Tried drawpile and it's the most advanced of the bunch, but it requires installing so might be a con for some.

Looked at their Amazon page and saying no to that, my reasoning:
4 reviews and it's already at 3.6, looks like a generic chinese knockoff

If you want a really good low budget option go for http://www.amazon.com/Yiynova-MSP19...=yiynova+msp19u or similar tablets like Huion one, more at frenden.com for honest reviews on those

If you're on a really tight budget like me and not afraid to do things with your hands take a look at this alternative http://www.bongofish.co.uk/wacom/wacom_pt1.html all it really is, is a cheap spare monitor (or any laptop matrix with LVDS controller), cheap tablet of your choice (I'm using H610 pro for my project) and a bit of reading at bongofish forums

Take a look towards Sketchbook free or Krita as a middleground between photoshop and painter, it's fairly simple too. There's always Paint tool SAI and it has pretty good stabilizer algorithm for drawing

Edit: Even the most hardcore open-source painters I knew jumped from GIMP to Krita, because GIMP isn't very good for painting these days.

I've been using Huion H610 Pro for a year now, no complaints here and it's bigger than entry level Wacom (it definitely helps).

I'm thinking between buying HUION KAMVAS GT-221 Pro vs XP-Pen Artist22E vs Huion GT-191, first having a price tag of almost twice as much as the others.
Currently I'm using Huion H610 Pro, and I've never used monitor tablets so I have no way to compare whether it'll be worth the money, I also have no way of testing it in retail shops before I buy one.

Anyone who used either tablets who can give any sort of advice? Ideally who tried all? Thanks!

Ended up ordering GT-221.

I have this issue with Huion Kamvas GT-221 and their drivers, I'm trying to make alt+left click work on newer drivers and it's not behaving the way it is on older drivers.
Version 13.x.x works fine with setting pen button on keystroke combination such as "alt + left click" but versions that go above 14.5.2 basically send it like "alt+; left click" which is really dumb on their part.

Currently I'm either forced to sit on 13.x.x cause even 14.5.2 has huge issues, or (which is what I'm doing currently) doing autohotkey ghetto script that rebinds my F11 to left mouse button and in actual driver page I send Alt + F11 combination cause it doesn't put it as "alt+;F11" but rather proper "alt+F11".
I tried looking at their XML config settings file but it's a bit beyond me.

Tried writing to Huion support only for them to send me this:

Huion Support posted:

"After checking with our team, the pen comes with your tablet GT-221 Pro is a rechargeable PE330; and it doesn't support alt + left click function at the same time
but our newer battery-free pen will supports alt+ left click functions (shortcut) at the same time
Sadly, the battery-free pen cannot be worked with the tablet GT-221pro
We may suggest you use your mouse and keyboard together to reach alt+left click function

Anyone have any solutions beyond this dumb crap I'm doing?

I've noticed that the colors on my tablet monitor seems to have gotten noticeably worse recently, like even after I calibrate it the colors seem way off, like they look like they're somehow too green and too pink at the same time. If I use it uncalibrated it looks like laughably bad and I don't remember that being the case before. Is there anything I could try that would be better than just trying to tweek the color settings with my lovely eyeballs? I'm really bad at adjusting that stuff myself and it usually ends up looking way off. Comparing a bunch of grays on my main monitor they look pretty neutral after calibrating but are way off on my 2nd. I have a Spyder 5 pro and a Ugee 2150b if that makes a difference.
If you are using Spyder's color tweaking software maybe try DisplayCAL. I haven't used any nor have I used colorimeters, but I heard people liked DisplayCAL more a few times.
