Gah, I came in to recommend So Many Dynamos. Suppose it's a good thing that they've been mentioned already.

so I'll go the more mathcore route and go with one of my tip top favorite newer groups, Rolo Tomassi. Very abrasive, noisy and confusing music but personally I find it gorgeous and brilliant. Sort of like a cross between HORSE the band, Daughters, and also have a lot of straight up noise-rock passages that sometimes remind me of Melt Banana. Their (only? I think) album Hysterics is great.

I was only recently introduced to mathcore by a friend, and I have really taken a liking to it. This thread looks to be an awesome source of new music.

The Number Twelve Looks Like You was a mathcore band in the same vein as Dillinger Escape Plan. They recently broke up, unfortunately.

I'm not a super huge fan of the band but Jon Karel is one of the most amazing drummers ever.

I also really encourage everyone to see So Many Dynamos live if possible. None of their studio work parallels their live show at all. I've seen them three times and each time was more and more tight and awesome.

So many dynamos is at least cool because it's a palindrome

I love this song. I've seen this band three times and I only know like three other songs in addition to this.

I'm not sure if this sorta secret "supergroup" ORBS(members from Between the Buried and Me, Fear Before, Abigail Williams, Nightbear) would fall under this but they have a really spacey yet complex abstract psychedelic pop sound going on.

All the songs are cool but Kid Cancer is my favorite!

The Number Twelve Looks Like You has a secret to tell everyone when they get 1000 Twitter followers.

I am so loving excited at the mere possibility of this band regrouping. They're one of the shining stars of modern heavy music in my eyes, and they broke up just as their music was reaching new heights.

I was gonna post this in the metalcore thread, but most of those people have horrible taste and #12 is definitely more math- even if they're heavy as poo poo.

that Number Twelve thing was for a live dvd -_-. that's very uncool of them to bait fans along like that.

Personally, I am in two minds with respect to Mathcore. Protest the Hero sits comfortably in my Top 10 bands, however little else within the genre is that appealing. It suffers from the same troubles that plague Prog Rock or Prog Metal in that they are taking a conventional element of music, in this case consistent time signature, pitch etc, and mixing it up. This can work effectively, and create a great dynamic and sound, however, like the music itself, success here is rather sporadic.

But as I said, Protest the Hero are amazing, and although their newest album was mostly a disappointment, I hope you will all join me in listening to C'est La Vie, the saving grace of Scurrilous:

You didn't really explain what about mathcore turns you off. Also, I would call Protest the Hero a prog metal band before I'd call them mathcore.

anyways, is anyone else creaming their pants in anticipation of Rolo Tomassi's third? After Cosmology they have become an incredible obsession of mine. I wish they would come to America.

Rolo Tomassi kinda sounds like iwrestledabearonce tried to be Converge. Can't really get behind the vocalist. Their bassist has a great heavy sound though.

I can see the Converge comparisons but I really don't think they are similar to IWABO at all except that they both have female vocalists. I always describe Rolo Tomassi to people as HORSE the Band meets Number Twelve Looks Like You

FERO LUX are my heroes. I'm proud of them, they opened for Circa Survive in Orlando the other day! They put on some of the best performances I've seen and the music is very "smart" but most importantly its super loving passionate. I hope they get a lot bigger.

Happy to see this thread around still!

my favorite mathy release this year, is probably Rolo Tomassi's Grievances https://rolotomassi.bandcamp.com/album/grievances it is very moody, neo-noir and romantic influenced chaotic hardcore with a lot of emphasis on piano-work.

or a slightly hidden gem, Mookie Island by Sea Monkey See. https://seamonkeysee.bandcamp.com/ very fun but also super gnarly tropical metal.

Bubblegum Octopus' Tough was also great. That's a musician who has really evolved and matured beyond what some would consider a gimmicky joke sound https://bubblegumoctopus.bandcamp.com/album/tough-2

Also, I'm super excited because next week I'm seeing Fall of Troy and And So I Watch You From Afar. FoT is playing all of Doppelganger, one of those "changed my high school life" albums.

I'd also like to briefly shill for my own band, because our debut EP is out in a few weeks and, well, we're mathcore (among other things). We're called Spires of the Lunar Sphere. we're heavily influenced by mid 2000s mathcore and artsy heavy music in general from that era, bands like HORSE the band, Daughters, Fantomas, #12, Arsonists Get All the Girls, etc. anyways, we just put a single out and i'd love to get decimated by math nerds in here. or yknow, complimented if its good.

Fall of Troy was incredible last night in Orlando, and And So I Watch You From Afar was even better.

the opening band, Slothrust, was...pretty meh, imo. very 90s alt rock throwback. kind of reminded me of Breeders but with a frontwoman who is on a LOT of xanax.

ASIWYFA was absolutely flawless, insanely loud and INSANELY energetic. one of the most fun sets I've seen a band play, and their energy was infectious. I didn't even like Heirs, or the album before it, very much, but the songs they played from both opened up to me in ways I never imagined. definitely the highlight of the night for me.

Fall of Troy was on point too, to no surprise. If you've never seen them you really need to. Thomas Erak is simply a loving legend, period. his guitar sounds huger and heavier than the vast majority of hardcore/metal bands with two guitarists, and his vocals were never off either. His legato playing is ridiculously strong. He can play huge sections of songs without picking or tapping for what seemed like ages, instead using his picking hand to make flamboyant conducting motions and waves. He is quite a sexy performer and the effortlessness with which he performs everything is so fun. I hate all these tech-metal groups nowadays who put on the most boring loving shows just motionlessly fingering their guitars and looking bored, it's been a while since i've seen such a energetic performance of highly technical music
