I love math rock. I actually just saw Giraffes? Giraffes! a week ago at a small venue in Boston, and they were incredible. The guitarist uses a loop pedal to do the different parts at once, and the drummer is insanely talented. They work really well as a duo and you could tell that they were really into it. If anybody gets the chance to see them, do it - they don't seem to play much, so don't miss out if the opportunity presents itself.

Also, I do a math rock radio show! 11pm-1am on Thursday nights at http://thebirn.com just click the 'listen now' anywhere during that time if you're interested in discovering some new math rock.

It looks like there's already a new Bygones EP coming out in a few days! Considering that their debut was just put out ~8 months ago, this is awesome news. The new EP is only a bit more than 10 minutes long, and if the amazon previews are any indication it's gonna be a lot more punk rock than the LP was. I'm in love with their debut so this is awesome news for me.

For the unaware, bygones is an awesome two man band consisting of Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos's guitarist/vocalist) and Zach Hill (drum all-star, plays with Hella, Marnie Stern, CHLL PLL and about a million other bands). I hesitate to call it a Tera Melos / Hella sideproject because they both seem to be putting a whole lot of time and effort into it. Check them out immediately if you haven't yet.

The new Bygones EP is pretty crazy thrash punk with a few math elements, it's pretty good. It's perhaps not as great as their debut, but it's a lot of fun. Also, "When A Vegan Eats a Vegan" is one of the best song titles ever.

The new Tera Melos is very disappointing. They've devolved into an awkward indie rock band or something, I'm really not a fan of the new sound.

Everything I hear from Patagonian Rats makes me less excited for it. The whole sound of the album is so much flatter and less interesting than anything else they've done. I dunno, the older stuff is all so energetic and creative and wonderful and I'm just not sensing any of that on the samples that we've gotten so far.

I hope I'm wrong.

I'm not crazy about the new album now that I've heard it, but I guess it might grow on me.

On the plus side, I am still super excited to see Tera Melos (with Anamanaguchi!) in Brooklyn next month. Anybody else in the east coast should definitely try to make it to one of the shows they're playing because they usually like to ignore us so that they can go tour japan ten times in a row instead.

My math rock radio show is starting back up for the semester through my college's radio station, in case any of you guys are interested. It's on mondays from 2-4pm, if you want to check it out just go to http://thebirn.com and click on the "listen now" button in the middle of the page.

I recently stumbled onto Sajjanu, they're kinda like Nuito but not as consistently fast and crazy. Everything they do is pretty much all through-composed, very little repetition, lots of weirdness, I think they're on John Zorn's label. It's good stuff, recommended if you like Ahleuchatistas, Nuito, Upsilon Acrux, etc

Hella just put their new album up on bandcamp for anyone who doesn't have it. http://hella.bandcamp.com/album/tripper

This album is so loving good. Can't recommend it enough to everyone in thread, not that Hella should take much convincing.

Do we have a release date yet for that new Giraffes Giraffes? ?

Finally, I have been loving the 2012 release by Pile, a band introduced to me by this thread. Might not classify them as math-rock as soon as very 90's inspired, Dinosaur Jr. sounding indie rock tinted with post-hardcore, but some time signature screwery and dissonance are certainly involved to the extent where they could fit in here.

I'll second this. These guys are from Boston and I love everything I've heard by them. It's basically indie grunge.

I'm a big fan of the CHON EP. The melodies are just awesome all over it.

I'm bummed to be in USA and nowhere near that ArcTanGent festival. A math rock festival is the most amazing idea ever.

I have seen Sargent House tweeting a lot about putting on a festival next year, though, so there's hope.

Has anybody seen TTNG with the new singer? I saw them on their last US tour with Stu before he left the band and it was pretty solid, I feel like they'd be even better now.

Via Luna just dropped a great new album, the fourth track is my favorite. Reminds me of Ghosts and Vodka and Rooftops.
