As someone looking to make his first foray into a media streamer, the Boxee Box looks like a very good candidate. Would anyone care to give their opinion as to the breakdown of a Boxee Box versus other options, such as the Popcorn Hour, Roku, WDTV, etc? I'm having difficulties finding much in terms of an apple to apple comparison.

The HDHomeRun is definitely compatible with MythTV, and XBMC is capable of talking to native MythTV backends, so I don't really see any reason that wouldn't work. I guess it depends on what level of access you can get to in Linux under the covers

2nd quarter? that sucks, i almost wish they would release it right away, bugs and all, and just fix minor annoyances later i just feel the boxee box could be 'the one'.

A couple of weeks in, I'm really enjoying having Boxee as part of my home theater setup. There's nothing better for aggregating all the streaming content out there, and oddly enough Hulu performs much better in Boxee than in their inferior Hulu Desktop app. I'm still using XBMC for local movies and TV shows, though. I hope Boxee either adds fanart support or restores the manual override for its title recognition that disappeared between alpha and beta.

Is there still no word whatsoever about an actual release date for this? All I see are conflicting reports, some saying 1st quarter 2010 and some saying 2nd. I just want a new media player that renders subtitles properly but I don't want to have to buy another one in the meantime

I've been on the fence about a Popcorn Hour for a looong time, but if this thing can do everything it promises I'm definitely buying it at release. Here's to hoping it comes out early Q2 instead of late. PS: If the form factor is such a turn-off, you can always shove it behind your TV or something, as long as you are using the RF remote. porksmash fucked around with this message at 00:16 on Feb 18, 2010 |

As long as naming local media is fixed, I will be getting one of these. I have ~600 movies stored on HDD. The boxee beta got around 80 of them totally wrong. XBMC got maybe 5 wrong. The guy said in that QA session that it is a big priority, so I hope he is right. Otherwise I might get one to install XBMC on. My xbox is lacking in power for HD movies.

I really hope this thing (the HW) lives up to all the hype. Compared to everything else out there (http://www.iboum.com/net-media-players.php?ppp=&pg=1), this really seems to be the killer device I, and tons of other people, have been waiting for. The openness of the hardware is key -- NVIDIA's Tegra 2 chip looks loving awesome, and custom firmwares should be no problem given its Linux compatibility. My only gripe with the DLink box is the fact that they are pulling the stereo audio (red/white) connectors out of the chip, but not the composite video (yellow) to accommodate old TVs. The chip supports it http://www.nvidia.com/object/tegra_250.html, so why not spend the $0.10 to add an option for the non-digital (read: cheap) mofos. Fortunately, this won't be the only box built around this chipset if Boxee and XBMC remain HW vendor neutral.

Just get a HDMI to DVI cable and RCA audio cables and you're golden. Probably wouldn't work for SD or even ED televisions with no DVI input though.

For those who are worried about the unpractical design not fitting into your home theater setup... can't you just turn the drat thing on it's side? It's a totally square cube except for that one corner that's cut off. Should be perfectly stackable if you turn it a bit, it's all solid-state inside, and if you arrange things right you shouldn't even be able to see the odd cut-off corner. Either way, I love the design. Man, I'm loving this beta. Somehow it encourages me to try out random new internet video - something I usually avoid like the plague.

I'm just very curious and kind of naive. Has any of these media boxes every have the option to include emulators for even just basic NES/SNES games? I know, I know, HTPC's are the way to go for these things, but theres no lazy man's option for emulators on a big screen from what I've seen. But hey, if theres something out there, feel free to inform me! (and I'm still working on getting a modded xbox for xmbc+game emulators, just curious whats on the market) Bonus Edit: Does hulu work on Boxee? What else can run hulu? If you're speaking specifically of Boxee, then you can add programs to the Boxee interface. Lifehacker had a writeup on this very thing 2 weeks ago.

Forgive me for being ignorant but I'm confused as to how this will replace subscription TV. I'm definitely on board buying this and I'd love to get rid of my satellite subscription, but I guess...well I just don't know how that would work. Does Boxee find streams of TV programs or something? Would I still be able to watch the Blackhawks on Comcast Sportsnet HD?

Does Boxee find streams of TV programs or something? Would I still be able to watch the Blackhawks on Comcast Sportsnet HD? Yes, it catalogs legal TV streams all over the net and presents them in full screen via a zoomed-in browser windows and allows navigation via a remote control. It doesn't receive normal TV channels like Windows Media Center, but there are so many streams available to it through Hulu, network websites, netflix, and site-specific apps like Revision3 that a fair number of people are willing to say they'd rather use it than pay for cable TV service. It can't receive your cable sports HD channel, but it does work with Major League Baseball's online streaming service, and as more leagues put their games online there should be growth in availability. I wouldn't be surprised if the NHL went that route considering the loving ghetto that is the Versus network.

Ohh I see, thanks for the responses. As for the NHL they do have online streaming service but you gotta pay for it. The games can certainly be found on other streaming sites like JustinTV or uStream but the quality for those ranges from pretty good to terrible.

Sports is absolutely moving toward payment for more complete coverage than the networks provide via the internet, and personally I am looking forward to it. Just give me good picture for NFL and NCAA football games and I'll throw up an antenna for the networks and dump cable.

Like MLB, the home market teams are a no go unless you have cable and internet and fork over additional money if the team allows it to happen. Watching the Yankees legally in the NYC area on a PC is at least $171 ($56 a month for TV, $45 a month for Internet, $70 a season for the games on YES with no WWOR, FOX or ESPN games). The local NHL games or the Mets can't be viewed legally online for any amount here. Sports are a cash cow for local TV operators and Boxee and other online providers simply can't compete right now with them but they could if this pans out for them.

The situation now is pretty skewed toward TV operators, but as machines that can stream this stuff (PCs, set-top boxes, networked bluray players) penetrate more homes in the next few years I have to think that sports leagues are going to figure out that they could be making all the revenue, in terms of ads and subscriptions, themselves. The NFL is already moving in that direction by putting the Thursday game on NFL Network, which they're free to put on the net for a price.

Sounds like TiVo has a product that does much of the same, in addition to the usual DVR functionality : http://www.tivo.com/what-is-premiere/premiere-is/index.html. It would be interesting to see a review comparing the two, but I suppose that will have to wait. Obviously the boxee box will be cheaper, but having a DVR + tivo's version of boxee would be pretty convenient (if I had cable service).
