Has anybody had any experience with Arcane Legions? I was pumped for its release, but then I saw the models in person and they were barf. The unit mechanics seem interesting, but I'm way hesitant about their online component.

So my question is, are the low price point and the cool setting drowned out by the poo poo models and the dependency on online stuff?

You may find Mordheim worth a second look. Although it's fundamentally built on the 2e 40k engine, there is a lot of subtle improvements over Necromunda.

Its community put out quality expansions / alternate settings which have achieved varying levels of 'official support'. There are full re-skinned setting expansions for Lustria, Araby, and civil-war era Empire (rural).

I haven't found anything that out-Mordheim's Mordheim. There are still some rules quirks and balance issues, the official models still cost too much, and good luck finding an opponent, but it's free

Does anybody know what happened to those 54mm minis that John Blanche was putting out? His official site is down, and I never actually saw them in stores.

e: The Femmes Militant line. IDK if there was a game to back them up, but they were weird and Blanche-y and had boobs.

That Malifaux terrain looks fantastic, but I'm suspicious that it looks less-than-fantastic in person.

There's also DMZ, which I sadly know nothing about other than that it exists and used a weird triangle-based grid system.

I've also heard that the indy branch of GW made an amazing Old West game, but I haven't gotten to play it firsthand.

So this third printing... this may be good for me.

I just paged through Tomorrow's War at Barnes & Noble, and it looks like it's Ambush Alley reskinned to a near-future setting. Think Battletech without mechs. I didn't immediately fall in love, but somebody here might have been waiting for it. Anyway, it's out there.

Do you have a link to the "other" Specialist Games menu? The one with Dark Future, Bommas over the Sulfa River, and the rest of the range?

I know that page exists, but GW crippled it when they re-did the whole website last year.

What is the appeal of Ogre anyway? I know a lot of old school gamers love it, but it looks pretty average to me. Even the new release looks crude in comparison to contemporary games.

Ogre is a straight-forward giant robot tanks game. You don't need to get too invested in the setting to understand what's happening, the rules aren't over-elaborate, and (unlike a lot of contemporary games) it's a closed system - everything you'll ever need is in one box.

Nostalgia is a big factor, but it's a solid game that's been OOP for twelve years. The double-wide coffin box and KS extras made it really hard to resist if you'd been looking forward to sixth since it was hinted at four years ago.

Does anybody remember what that miniatures game was that you were supposed to use with an iPad? It had all sorts of horrible DRM and server-side record-keeping and was full of bad ideas, but the models were cool and I wanted to pick them up after the company crashed and burned.

Which I think happened, because I haven't seen a thing about it in like two years.

That was it! Although their website still has links to activate your miniatures, and prices haven't tumbled yet.

What's the difference between the Starter and the Starter INTEGRAL? The descriptions are the same, except one costs $90 more.

e: Expensive one includes the plastic boards.

It had lots of little problems but the new edition helps fix the majority of them. It's my go-to to introduce people to wargaming.

Which ones are from the new edition? The not-Fallout one and Flying Lead both look promising, but I'd like to go with the most current rules if the initial game was problematic.

And how compatible are the games within the system? Could I pit a Flying Lead SWAT team against a pack of Fear and Faith werewolves? Because that's a game I want to play.

I'm looking for cool exo-suit armor with a heavy machine gun. The best thing I could find was AT-43's Death Dealer TacArms:

I'd have to cut one gun off each, but then I'd have extra machine guns. Unforunately, these loving things don't exist anymore and I missed the part when Rackham was giving them away. They're also only about the size of a Space Marine terminator.

So next option:

These are Dust Tactics Grim Reapers. But from what I can tell they're substantially smaller than the Death Dealers? Nobody seems to have any images of them online next to anything else. They've also got jet-packs for some reason.

Does anybody know how big the Dust Tactics guys are? Or of any exo-armor figures that would be big enough for a true-scale 28mm figure to fit inside, preferably with a machine gun?

I really don't want to resort to MechWarrior Dark Ages figures, but I'm running out of options.

Is this where Mage Knight chat goes? Because I can't figure out how my old models work with the new ones.

I downloaded the 2.0 rules but they don't seem to be up to date with some of the later expansions, particularly they're missing some colors on the SAC cards and a few other references. Is there a better rulebook available?

The new ones come with two dials- one for Heroclix rules and one for Mage Knight 2.0, which is why they named the expansion Resurrection.

Although to use the MK rules they direct you to their terrible website that doesn't actually provide up to date anything. Maybe BGG has something? It seems insane that they'd bother making dials and then not provide rules for them. The new starter only has the Heroclix rule book.

The latest Wrath of Kings update has a gameplay video. Like all gameplay videos, it's two heavy-set guys awkwardly bantering and rolling dice and explaining mechanics. They're not unwatchable, but it has that same kind of hokey staged-joviality that you get from semi-scripted reality TV like Pawn Stars.

One thing that looks promising is that the attack tables are on your opponent's cards, which should help to keep both players engaged. The activations-based play, and this both address the big thing that put me off of Warhammer - Too little to do on your opponent's turn. It's really interesting that the defending models determine the attack results - it reminds me of Flames of War slightly in that regard. I realized this in the rulebook, but it's cool to see in play.

The figures are looking good on the table, the big stuff is bigger than I thought, and there's a lot of keywords and special rules that may make for a steep learning curve, but should also add some depth and longevity. I'm really looking forward to this one, and am hopeful to give it a try with proxies before it does.

One of the D6G podcast guys is also writing the comic and some fluff. He seems like a pretty chill guy, but with WWE they're apparently trying to go full blown Mutant Chronicles in historical fiction. Or Bravestarr. But the writing was on the wall from the beginning that this was going to be gothic space steam cowboy camp punk or whatever the hell this is. It lost me at werewolf Native Americans, and that was pretty early on.

Can't really fault them on that, huge plastics with limited sales potential (most players will need one, maybe two of figure X) are expensive and risky. They sunk Rackham - it's completely reasonable to back this with your customers instead of your company.

It's also really unclear where the jumping-on point is, plus it falls into the 'unpopular because it's unpopular' (ie: "... but I don't know anyone who plays") trap that a lot of new miniatures wargames encounter. I feel like it also came out in a glut of weird war 2 stuff, but that might not be right.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with an Army of Darkness style Crusaders vs Zombies, and it's probably a good idea to get people's feet wet in Historicals. But loving hell, those Gripping Beast zombies look like poo. For comparison, look at these plastics:

A guy made Skyrim-style Draguhr by painting LoTR Army of the Dead ghosts as undead. (I want to say it was OldFogey on the Mantic forum?) You can get Mantic Zombies or a box of the plastic AotD for cheap (by GW standards anyway), any one of a thousand Necromancers, and be in business. A 50-man box of Gripping Beast metals is going to run you in the $150 neighborhood, and those are embarrassing-rear end rear end sculpts.

But since it's a limited edition army box, you probably won't be able to get the battleboard card on its own.
