The name is a portmanteau of "billion" and "millennium", recalling the year 2000 bug. The name is not very logical as billennium should rather mean a billion years. "Gigasecond" would be a more apt term.

yeah i remember reading that when it came out and being creeped out. so many sci fi shows have at least one character who doesn't understand human sexuality or relationships (data, spock, river in firefly, etc) and when you think about that as a sanitized version of the pedo innocence fantasy it is icky
