Yeah I think the whole point of Earthlings is just to shock you into total veganism. They are obviously biased and would rather show you the absolute worst of the worst with no context so you will assume it's the norm, and far more common than it actually is. Obviously the stuff they showed does go on and it's despicable, but if they did give statistics and facts it would lessen the impact because you'd see it's not as common as they're making out.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who couldn't make it all the way through.

I am a vegetarian because my thoughts about meat have always been, "If I couldn't kill an animal myself, I shouldn't be eating it." And I probably couldn't kill an animal, even if was in a humane-non-skinning-alive way.

I really considered buying one of those really warm Canada Goose coats for the winter but then realized that it would have made me a huge hypocrite. Knockoffs are more humane and cheaper!

The reason I believe that though is because I think our culture is problematically distanced from ALL THE FOOD we eat. I really liked Food Inc. because it showed where it comes from. Earthlings is just a shock film without context.

Edit: My favourite Part of This Film is Not Yet Rated was the commentary on how the MPAA has become more puritanical recently than they were int eh 70's. Which, when you watch some old films is quite prescient.

In this vein, I really reccomend The September Issue about Vogue magazine and Anna Wintour. The Devil Wears Prada made her out to be this huge bitch and this is kind of the balance to that.

I couldn't find an online source, but download it. Just a look at how successful people need to be dicks sometimes. It has a nice little twist.

I guess he knows how to be very disarming and puts on a stunning front of naivety that gets people to reveal so much crap.

Louis meets the Nazis was pretty jawdropping with the two girls singing hate songs.

I think Louis Theroux misses that mark most of the time. I've seen the Nazis, the most hated family in America and the Thai brides docs and it just seems like he misses a lot of good opportunities to ask these people WHY these movements proliferate and learn about them. Instead, he asks Fred Phelps, "Do you really believe this?"

Yes, Louis he really does. Move on to some real investigative journalism.

I think it was the Thai brides doc that pissed me off the mot. He just came off like such a condescending rear end in a top hat to these guys and women who are pretty desperate and seeking comfort in a not-conventional-not-ideal system. Just because it wasn't something he would do, everything is wrong with it.

Yeah, I don't think he's awesome. He rubs me the wrong way.

Queen of Versailles - garish couple try to turn the hundreds of millions from the husband's timeshare hawking business into America's largest and most ostentatious home in Orlando, FL, then run into economic hard times when the home is only a half built shell and hilarity ensues. It's pretty much the perfect documentation of the trashy reality show that is America over the last decade or so.

Thank you for this. Watched it last night. Really fascinating. He paid cash for that house and then put a mortgage on it to put the money back in his time share company. This is the same guy who sent the email to his employees saying he'd start layoffs if Obama won. The good news is that since November, he's actually been able to give all of his existing employees a 5% raise.

Ugh, I just looked him up and he was found guilty of sexual harassment for offering an employee $1 million to sleep with him. Sympathy gone. http://www.wftv.com/news/news/woman-talks-after-winning-5-million-in-lawsuit-ove/nFBsF/

On the plus side, that awful man is now so broke he can't influence politics the way he suggested he used to! It'll all come out in the wash in this depression recession.

I actually try not to think of Tillikum alone, in his own tank, in living hell, for the rest of his life...uh, I'm tearing up right now.

I look at Tillikum as a POW who was tortured for years upon years and then eventually lashed out violently at his captors. So if something similar happened to a human soldier no, I wouldn't hold them responsible or want them punished for their actions.

Yeah same. If a child was kidnapped and tortured everyday and then later came to a justice system like our own and killed several people, his lifetime of abuse would likely mitigate his sentence. Happens all the time in criminal law. Not Tillikum though :(

HUNDU THE BEAST GOD posted:

By anthropomorphizing the subject to that degree, you're asking the viewer to take a stance: either understand that this is "just" a narrative device and treat it as such, or to allow yourself to sympathize fully and reach a conclusion, which as you say is "obviously" not to imprison animals for our amusement.

Even before getting into what this means for our fellow human beings (the very first thing I thought of watching this was The House I Live In), the obviousness of that ethical stance is enough to provoke thoughts about all kinds of things we just accept as facts of life and that is disturbing in a literal sense. It's a lot easier and much less disturbing to just dismiss it as cheap anthropomorphism, even if the film does make a lot of great points about both not anthropomorphizing animals to that degree while also understanding that our fellow animals are complex organisms with emotional lives.

Actually, poo poo, I just made the same point as All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace.

A lot of modern commentary focuses on the fact that humans are nasty, greedy and shortsighted and the current trend seems especially fixated on justifying this. I feel like we're in the midst of a growing ideology of bloodcurdling just-so stories that do nothing but reinforce why the optimal choice is not to care and disconnect yourself from any empathy for the sake of your own comfort.

I just don't think most people are ready to accept the fact that we treat this planet and really all of the creatures in it like garbage (even other humans). Most people I know don't think of animals as living beings. They just think of them as objects (with the exception of their own pets).

Wait, are caring & action finite resources? Because I've found I can care about all animals (even cows and chickens) and do what I can to detract from their suffering, without having to sacrifice my concern for other people and their suffering.

I just watched Spinning Plates on Netflix streaming. It goes inside three American restaurants with very different profiles. It' definitely my favorite stripe of documentaries: seemingly innocuous subject where the stories turn out to be stranger than fiction. I highly recommend it, especially if you are into to food.
