Television. Doesn't it make you want to kick things?
The Ascent of Man http://www.amazon.com/Ascent-Man-5-set/dp/B000NDI3SK was a big BBC series a while back which was narrated by Jacob Bronowski. It really is a history of drat near everything. It started with the evolution of man from apes (which is dated considering newer discoveries) and went all the way through greek and islamic history and onward. It's about the development of human traits and society. What gets me is that there are long shots of Bronowski just talking to you at the top of some mountain or at some ruin and you'd think that would be boring but the man is awesome. My favorite was episode 4 (of 13) called "The Music of the Spheres."

(forgive them their cheesy music)
