My Escort was great when I was driving across the country but I never bothered putting it into my current ride because the local cops started used LIDAR and while my Escort detected it just fine it didn't stop them from clocking me all the same.

The most depressing thing about the new Civic is the fact that it's relatively outclassed compared to everything else in its class and that still hasn't seemed to impact the sales one bit, it's still a huge hit.

Toyota or Honda could release giant turds for cars and the intertia of public perception would still have them selling like crazy. That's not to say that I think they're current lineups are turds, just not especially good compared to cars that don't sell nearly as much from other manufacturers.

So this is the new Mercedes Benz CLA. I was looking at the starting prices and I think the base model with like 180 hp starts at 28k Euro. If they could price this about the same as a VW Jetta or Golf it would be golden but I can't see a Benz going for that money new in America.

I tend to agree that it doesn't seem very appealing vs spending a few thousand more for an actual C-class unless it's coming well equipped standard without options, but being a German luxury brand I don't have much hope for that. Least it doesn't appear to be resemble a melted bean as much as some of the earlier photos made it appear.

The CLA45AMG that's supposed to be coming could be pretty great if it comes in around $45k, I'd still rather of seen the A45AMG though.

Also for those of us in the north where the winter is longer than the summer there's a definite appeal to having our "fun" car being usable in the snow, not to mention the practicality of having a sedan vs small coupe. You can still drive a high power rear-wheel drive car in the winter of course with nice tires but you're lying to yourself if you think that Blizzaks on RWD = Blizzaks on an AWD in a snowy winter.

When I lived in Texas it seemed like Audi's were a rarity compared to BMWs, in Alaska they're evenly split, in the 90s before every BMW or Mercedes came with X-Drive or 4matic the Audis were a lot more common.

No crashes, always remembers both my wifes and my phone, and everything I regularly try to access is one screen from the top menu or I just use the steering wheel d-pads for anyways. Also you can get rid of a lot of the annoying voice prompts and speed up the system by going to the advanced voice mode.

I've gotten the impression that the worst MFT issues seemed to crop up on the 2012 and early 2013 Fords.

Can't complain, there're some performance aspects I wish were better(slow shifts, weight) but overall it's a great compromise between an everyday commuter, family(or stuff) hauler, and sports car that I feel comfortable driving all year round through any weather. It's also a lot more luxurious than most expect, have a couple friends with stripper off lease-special BMWs who were surprised what you can get in a fully loaded new car nowadays, luxury marquee or not. As a not particularly tall or fat person the complaints about it being cramped inside in relation to its outer dimensions don't bother me.

All that said I might've ended up with an SRT8 if snowy driving wasn't a concern.

Speaking as someone who's only experienced MFT after a year and a half of updates(late '13 car) I can say I've never had a problem with it, I don't see how it could be any simpler to perform basic functions, and I think all the pictures of Sync V3 look hideous so far. Seriously, that's ugly and doesn't look like it would blend in well with any cars interior, something that I think MFT does very well, at least in my car.

Not sure if you're aware of this since you didn't mention it but your chosen examples illustrate your first point very well since the MKS is just a Ford Taurus and the current Taurus is based off an older Volvo platform at the moment. You know I keep hearing this everywhere, I may have even repeated the rumour here myself, but all the rumours from shortly after the Fusion came out said it was MY2016 they'd show up but 2 years later Ford still hasn't shown or officially announced anything in regards to the MKS or Taurus as far as I know. I leased my '13 SHO 2 years ago thinking that by the time it was up in 3 years the 2016 would've already been out for 6 months but here we are now only 5 months from when I'd typically expect to start seeing the MY2016 at dealers and nothing, was really hoping they'd be announced in Detroit.

If they are on the way I'm really starting to think it'll be in 2017 the same as the new Raptor with the second generation Ecoboost 2.0s and 3.5s.

Also I really like Ford's blue color options but a dark green just looks fantastic on a meaty car, I'd of gotten green over blue if it was an option. White = bleh

Even with the 3.5 EB there's definitely some lag but you're not going to notice unless you're hammering it from a stop and it's over with quick. The now behind the times 6 speed auto is a larger cause of delays once you're already going(a tune or staying in S alleviates a lot of this on the SHO).

I know a lot of auto enthusiasts would disagree but if it was available in AWD it might've actually be a relative success, for a large sedan in a dying segment, there's a decent chance I'd have one right now instead of a SHO if it was. There's a niche for a high power large AWD sedan around that price point that's empty now aside from SHOs, specially with the Charger R/T no longer available in AWD, the other options are mostly German and much much more expensive.

I'm sure the whole glass cockpit thing is a selling point too :rolleye: I'll gently caress off if those screens can be configured, but after having a ford with two useless screens in it in the past(2012 focus w/o MFT), I'm not holding my breath. The amount of wasted real-estate in the sync system was appalling. A 5 inch screen for only two lines of text.

As mentioned yes that screen isn't permanently stuck on the navigation ball, there are several different menus to go through, don't know why you'd think otherwise. You can probably find a video online detailing them since Ford has put them in a bunch of vehicles since like 2012.

I really was hoping they'd of updated the dash by now though, I have those screens in my SHO that I'm likely to replace with a Fusion Sport and I'm disappointed I'll be looking at the same dash basically unchanged for another 3 years. I do agree they should be bigger given the real estate left open above and below. Everyone really just needs to go full LCD as far as I'm concerned, Cadillac and Audi's full screen dashes look awesome.

Really wish some press reviews of the Sports had come out by now just to put some actual numbers to the Sport, I'm really really surprised they haven't and the only reasons I can think of for that are incompetence or a fear they won't review well but given the poo poo cars that always get press reviews anyways that seems unlikely.

As someone with a current generation SHO it was really disappointing. C&Ds own test of the SHO as it was released in 2009 has virtually the same numbers.

Unlike the 3.5 EcoBoost I think the iron block 2.7 may not really be a great fit for a performance oriented car, I think it's to blame for most of the weight. Wonder what the front/rear weight ratio is.

Looking at C&Ds own instrumented test results a same generation Fusion with the 2.0l and AWD gains 385 pounds going to the sport with the 2.7, a same generation Taurus with the 2.0l and no AWD only gains 344 pounds going to the SHO with the 3.5 + AWD.

Didn't have any problems when I ordered my Ford, set up an appointment to test drive a like model in stock, went there, drove around for awhile, sat down and specced it out exactly as i wanted, put a refundable $1000 deposit down and left. Couple months later it was delivered and while their finance guy did push the extended warranties and service packages I wouldn't say they pushed very hard.

It probably helped that I was special ordering a car and just paying straight X-plan but overall while I spent more time in the dealership than I'd like it wasn't that bad. Even that I think was legitimately just because they weren't necessarily all that efficient vs purposely wasting time.

Tried to order a VW Golf R last year and had a somewhat similar experience, scheduled a test drive with a like model in stock(an S3), went and did it, specced out my car, put down a deposit and left. Of course they flat out said "MSRP only on Golf R's no exceptions" so there was nothing to argue over but frankly at the time that was about as good as it got for R's where I am. As it happened I never took delivery of that car because 6 months later they still didn't have a build date from VW, they just refunded my money no questions asked.

Taking the negotiation out of the equation seems to lead to less scumminess, a world of build-to-order MSRP only car purchases could be a lot less stressful than the current model if they could get delivery times down.

Also the Ford dealer had a popcorn machine and VW dealer had... brochures, and Audi's and Porsches to ogle.

Don't forget the increased road maintenance from studded tires, here in Alaska it seems like any street that sees significant traffic over 35mph needs to be resurfaced every 2-5 years otherwise you end up with dangerously deep ruts due to them.

You could try to disallow studs or discourage them through a tax as has been suggested up here but you then compound the burden of cost issue as studdless snow tires tend to be much more expensive when you take into account how quickly they wear. I can get 2 good years out of them in my experience then the 3rd they're not really any better than all-seasons and I've never gotten a full set for less than $800.

Better to hope for rapid progress in self-driving cars though I have no idea if anyone's even tried tackling winter conditions with them yet.

I see a lot of comments elsewhere about how the range of a diesel truck is over a 1000 miles but it doesn't actually sound like it matters one bit to me due to unrelated regulations.
