It was Brazilian federal agents ambushing suspected drug smugglers but loving up the timing slightly and showing up when the plane was already turned around and ready to go. Apparently they arrested five people and seized (what's left of) the plane, some electronic surveillance gear, and a bicycle.

Word on that China Eastern flight is that it was a mass murder/suicide. No cockpit voice yet, but it was flown into that dive by someone in the cockpit. https://www.wsj.com/articles/china-eastern-black-box-points-to-intentional-nosedive-11652805097

It's quick, comfortable, always a little special. I've never really understood people who are afraid of it. This scares the poo poo out of me.

Before BRAC closed Myrtle Beach AFB my father used to have A-10s do practice runs on him while he was doing bulldozer work in the woods. Said it was both interesting and unnerving.

My dad and I got buzzed by a CL-415 while putting the canoe in the water once. We stuck to the rivers that day.

We used to go up there every summer and it wouldn't be a complete trip if we didn't get buzzed by one while out in the canoe. My middle school rear end was too dumb to be unnerved. It was mostly just cool as hell to have a Cobra Rattler pass a couple hundred feet over you before pulling up to avoid the mountain at the far end of the lake. Speaking of the Adirondacks, if you look hard enough on Wright Peak you can still find wreckage from the B-47 that crashed there years ago (at least as of 2020).

Look I get that the 225 is a one of a kind and therefore priceless airplane but I could not give one gently caress less about a destroyed machine compared to the devastation and countless civilian deaths Ukraine has suffered and continues to suffer because of Russia's aggression. Warcrimes against children have been committed. Who the gently caress cares that big airplane got blown up when compared to that?

Symbols are important. Obviously the human lives being destroyed are more significant, as is the infrastructure which is vital to a normally-functioning society, but the destruction of the An-255 means more than just "an airplane was destroyed."

The biggest airplane was destroyed. Something like 3,380 civilians have died so far and millions of people have fled the country. Maybe if you photoshopped Fluttershy into the picture I’d have an easier time empathizing with the broken plane.

Nobody, afaik, has posted anything reducing the absolute enormity of the pain and suffering of people. I am pretty sure absolutely everyone here is of the same mind that it can't end soon enough. This is, however, the aircraft thread and people post pictures of aircraft or aircraft things... sometimes they are related to current events.

Hey remember how cool cockpits are? Well here's another one, the Avro Vulcan! The most H.R. Giger, and therefore the coolest, cockpit. Bonus content, the back: where the Air Electronics Officer and navigators (yes, plural) sat. It's a half-floor level down, and facing backwards.

There are threads in GBS, D&D, and (I think) GIP where you can post about how Ukraine is innocent and unproblematic and nazi-free and all Russians are savage orcs who constantly commit war crimes with likeminded goons. You'd probably be happier taking this over there if your perspective on events prevents you from understanding why the destruction of a notable aircraft is on topic in the aircraft thread. e: I did not mean to imply that goons commit war crimes, but I guess we can't rule it out. Gah. Airfares are such a poo poo show. THe nice thing about COVID is I didn't need to go anywhere. I need to go to Halifax in Sept and in the past week they went up $1K from when I last checked, although Aug and earlier is still relatively inexpensive. Has anyone figured out the rhyme or reason as to how/why this happens? I'm thinking of just waiting a month or so at this point and do a google alert.
