Honestly, back in the 80s when the Russian Air Force had some kind of funding for training, I'm sure the -29 had better capabilities. In Georgia, IIRC, most of the strike aircraft used were Su-25s, and I don't think the -29 was one of the airframes lost.

If I had to bet money, I'd say the most capable -29 squadrons in 2010 belong to the Indian Air Force.

Latest Air & Space magazine from the Smithsonion has a write up of the Marine/Malaysian joint mission. F/A-18D v Mig 29, Devildogs took every engagement with only a couple "draws". They mention the Malay air force doesn't get the number of flight hours that the Marines do (pretty much no air force gets the flight time our military does) but says they do have some good flyers. They mention the Malay are dropping the 29 and getting newly fitted with Su-30 this year and might fair better (better technology) once they get used to it.

One thing I thought was interesting is that one of the bigger challenges other air forces have is loiter time. Not due to efficiancy but because almost none of them practice in-flight refueling which all of ours do regularly.

ETA: they also mention that it's really good training for our guys to fly from less prepared fields and without air conditioned hangers. They had to do maintenance on the taramac and do FOD walks because the Malaysians with the top intake -29s didn't worry about that at all.

Yeah at this point if there's a significant air to air engagement and you get within cannon range, someone done hosed up.

They thought the same thing after Korea with the F-4 until we started loosing pilots. You field planes designed for air superiority without guns (or some short range offensive capability) and you leave a gaping hole for your enemies to take advantage of it.

The Hercules is the largest flying boat ever built, and has the largest wingspan and height of any aircraft in history. The aircraft made its only flight on November 2, 1947.

Yea I love that it has a longer wingspan and taller than the AN-225 and the Airbuss A380 (beats the A380 height by 4 inches!) and the whole thing is made outa wood with prop engines.

So I hear this U-2 is a hard airplane to fly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eamnTyfkUBY

This is awesome.

In the current edition of the Air & Space mag they do a story on Kelly Johnson (Skunkworks founder). He was basically a control freak when it came to management which is where his true genius was. There is a story in there about the first landings of the U-2. He told the test pilot to land on the front wheel, not the back. The test pilot tries and tries but the plane keeps bouncing. It is almost sundown when the pilot says "gently caress it" and lands tail wheel first and is finally able to get it down. Kelly is reportedly ticked the pilot didn't do it "right" but doesn't say anything. At the party afterwards to celibrate it he challenges the pilot to an arm wrestling match and slams his hand down so hard on the table that the guy shows up the next day with it in a splint. Guess the rumors of his temper weren't too far off either.

I think this is probably one of my favorite "crash" photos.

It's like the plane just said, "Hey guys I'm a bit tired, think I'll just rest here for a bit."

I wouldn't be surprised if the mostly-constant slope up the front of the A380 is a bit better aerodynamically than the 747.

I should hope so. The A380's design was done 40 years after the 747. Lots of changes from the early 60's to the turn of the century.

But yea it is more ugly than the 747 to me also.

Seeing balloons lit up at night is a sweet, sweet thing. Where was this?

Yea which rally is this? I know the pilots of about 4 of those balloons including the bees.

I live in Albuquerque, NM, home of the International Balloon Fiesta. It's the largest fiesta/rally in the world with an attendance of about 800 balloons and a record of 1000 balloons (next 2 largest are about 300 and about 200 balloons). It is still considered the most photographed event in the world. Pilots from around the world ship their balloons here to fly in it. First week of October for 9 days you get to see 800 balloons flying all over the city.

Some more ballooning porn. I love hot air ballooning and have been crewing/flying for 22 yrs and will be buying my own balloon in about 2 yrs. The balloon I want is in the "racer" class, it's smaller and a hell of a lot more reactive than ones designed to carry multiple people.

Here are the Bees just before they are stood up. I was flying over with the pilot I've been crewing for since I was a kid.

Lighthouse anyone?

This one is of what we call "Dawn Patrol", they are specially licensed and granted waivers to take off before sunrise. Hot Air Balloons are not okay'd to fly at night normally.

This is my best friend's balloon, I tow the trailer it's in with my truck and am the "crew chief" for it. We started ballooning at the same time as kids and he got his license almost 2 yrs ago, it's been a blast.

That's pretty tight, I'll have to get some pics of a small festival we've got coming up this weekend. The evening "glow" they've got planned should be very photogenic I bet :)

Yea Glows can be very photogenic. Listen for the announcer doing the count down and start taking pics right before he has them start. Usually they do 2 types of burns, "flicker" which means they hit the burners on-off-on-off rapidly or they do 2-3 second full burn. Everything is usually kept pretty short as the pilots have to keep the air temp cool enough that they won't take off (they do tie off to trucks but I've seen a truck get dragged when the pilot went to take off and forgot to release the hold down).

Here is a bonus one for the nerd in us all.

It would be SAM 28000 or 29000 depending on which of the two it was. Those are the airframe's tail numbers. El Presedente puts a foot on board and they become AF One.

So I've had this SR-71 screw for about a year now, and since I got it I've been entertaining the idea of getting some shavings from it an having them inlaid on the inside of my wedding band. Wedding band arrived today, so I guess it's time to stop fantasizing and start taking steps toward finding out if that is even goddamn POSSIBLE.

Honestly Boomer, do it. Not sure I understand the hate for modifying it because you are buying the ring/metal anyway. Right now it's just a ring, it takes on no significance until the wedding day and then only the connection that you and your bride give to it. Personalizing it like this only adds to your connection to it.

My suggestion would be to have a small section of the gold taken out and replace it with metal from the screw shaped to fill the void. Then instead of shavings it's a small hunk of it and *if* someone notices it you have a good story on it.

I just finished Bob Hoover's "Forever Flying" biography and gotta say, daaaaammn! I've always admired him for his skills and have gotten to see him a fly a few times, even shook his hand. After reading the book though I would love to take him to dinner and just listen to him tell stories of his life.

If you haven't read it, I highly suggest it. As a "pay it forward" kind of act, the first person to reply here saying they want it I will send it to you for free.
