When did the Blues start getting C/D models? Fairly recently? I know a few years back it was pretty common for one of their aircraft to be grounded or have a delayed takeoff for a lot of shows. Those As were ancient.

I think NASA has several ex Blue Angels A models though.

fknlo posted:

What the hell was it doing there?

Not sure, Wikipedia says they've been using the C/D variants since around 2006. The pilot is Lt. Ryan Chamberlain, a 2003 SIU graduate. He brought a mechanic up with him in the second seat. We're leaving class early to watch him do a bad-rear end short-field take off.

I moved to the greater Salt Lake area a few months ago and it is awesome for plane spotting. Hill Airforce Base is nearby and every day I'm seeing C130's, formations of Apaches, Chinooks, and more.

There's a regional airport about 5 miles north of me and I've seen an F-35 doing touch and goes. The Apache usually circles my neighborhood at like 1500 AGL at about 7pm every night.

It rules. If you look at the reviews for the regional strip it's all people complaining about the military doing night ops out of there and it's like "Yo this airfield has been here since 1950 you jabronis."

Yes! I am planning on it soon. Because.......I need to go to Nevada.....to buy a thing that's not available here in Utah.

Edit: I got Hill confused with Wendover in Nevada, just over the border.

Doing both!

It's not like the video auto plays and I don't think it needs to be explained that people more often than not perish in aviation disasters.

Not trying to mod sass and I'm sorry it ruined your evening but I feel in this thread it's more of a caveat emptor situation when viewing crashes.

It's not accurate. The key switch grounds the mags to turn them off. So to run the engine, you would disconnect or cut the wires, not jump them.
I think you need this basic knowledge to pass* the PPL written.

You'd need the jumper to start it. Or hand prop.

I distinctly remember my CFI mentioning how trivial it is to steal a 152 by just hand starting via the prop.

I went to Sun N Fun at Lakeland, FL yesterday. Been to plenty of air shows but this was my first actual fly-in (I drove).

Absolute blast. Got to climb inside a c-47, and the pilot was telling me how they are participating in a charity/documentary called Currahee to Normandy.

They took most of the actors from Band of Brothers and spent a week certifying them to jump out of the plane. Now in June they're taking them to Normandy to jump again, and retrace Easy Company's route. They'll meet with survivors, etc.

Thunderbirds put on an amazing show as always. My girlfriend was almost literally blown away. I love how playful they are. Distracting you with 4 passing over, then the 5th one makes some noise over at the other end of the field to grab your attention, just in time for the 6th to do an afterburner pass out of nowhere.

F-35 was neat but I'd seen them a few times when I lived near Hill AFB in Salt Lake.

Also saw Polaris' Ghost Squadron and their MiG-21. I have some photos but mobile doesn't let you just paste photos in anymore. Felt like an Ace Combat game seeing it parked near two Super Hornets and three F-35s.
