I'll probably be setting up shop in this thread for the next... I dunno, forever.NathanScottPhillips posted:Also at the museum is Luke's X-Wing: Er, sorry. That is actually a 3/4 scale model originally built for promo purposes in Japan (get it because they are short?), but was bought and is currently being "rebuilt" by the local 501st Star Wars Costume Club. I plan on having a replica car show inside that museum one of these days. Cars always look awesome when they are inside hangars. One of my life goals is to see (and hopefully touch) every single SR-71 on display. This includes YF-12 and A-11s. My first was in Seattle, with the D-21 drone. I hopped that railing and just gently touched the metal. Totally a weird spiritual experience. I was 12, I think. I've visited the Blackbird at the SAC museum twice... Seen, the one at the USAF museum in Dayton. The YF-12 there doesn't have any kind of barrier whatsoever and you can peer into pretty much every part of it. I've seen the Blackbird in San Diego, and I need to spend a few days tooling around L.A. and the 100 miles around it, there are about six in that area, I think. When we re-do our 4,000 mile roadtrip this fall, we'll see six Blackbirds between Ohio, New York, D.C., and Kansas. Strangely enough, whenever I encounter one of these "awesome airplane poo poo" threads, no one ever posts the Boeing Bird of Prey. Also, this is terrifically Automotively AND Aeornautically Insane! I've spent a lot of time on Airliners.net and it's NEVER time wasted. I usually like to wait a week or so between visits and then check their highest-rated lists of photos from the last week or month. It's usually filled with loving gold. This week offers us... gently caress YEAH You can argue about how much you love the F-22 and how it can rock the poo poo out of anything else in the sky, or how much it sucks, everything from computer failures to whether the enormous cost is justifiable in an age of cheap drones where dogfights no longer happen, but there's just one thing I'd like to say about the Raptor. There is classical aircraft beauty that you can find in things like F-4U Corsairs and Constellations, and astonishing technical design evident in Russian designs like the Su-35 and the An-225, but almost nothing can even touch the sophisted and incredibly pleasing aesthetic design of the F-22. There are times where I don't think it even exists, that the USAF paid some ILM modelmakers to take our most deep-seated childhood memories of GI Joe vehicles and Popular Mechanics future weapons predictions, and make a CG model of the perfect jet fighter for recruitment ads. The Blackbird is still my favorite Frank Dillinger posted:welp, I just ordered a copy of Sled Driver off amazon for 15€! should be here in a few days, I can't wait! WHAT? HOW? WB-57, basically the US bought the licensing to produce the British Canberra bomber, it sucked for what we wanted so we gunned it up, made it's engines start with a pyrotechnic charge, and then started using it for high-altitude weather monitoring, reconnaissance, and space program observation. I think it's pretty, but I also LOVE goofy-looking planes.

It was then that I noticed I still had the throttles full forward. The plane was flying a mile every 1.6 seconds, well above our Mach 3.2 limit. It was the fastest we would ever fly. I pulled the throttles to idle just south of Sicily , but we still overran the refueling tanker awaiting us over Gibraltar.

The best thing about the touring B-17 and B-24? They smell just like an army surplus store, even from 10 feet away. When I was 11, my mom heard about the touring planes and took me to see them. When she heard that we could take rides, I was boarding the B-17 when she came screeching out onto the tarmac from one of the booths. Apparently she didn't know it cost money to fly on them, let alone the $400 they were charging at the time. Aw man. Since then, I've made sure to visit the bombers every year. These are my favorites from my 2008 visit. I had the higher-res version of this as my wallpaper for the whole loving summer. There need to be more pictures of WWII era planes reflected in WWII era hubcaps!

Not a good example because the Axis powers wouldn't send a plane with their own marking to masquerade with attackers, but maybe it will provide some insight into how common this actually was.

The one and only time I went to the EAA air show, I was 13 and we flew there with my CAP buddies on a C-130. In-loving-credible experience for a kid. To boot, it was the 50th anniversary of the air force and the show was goddamn astonishing. Got to see a Blackbird fly-by, a B-2 fly-by, and tons of other poo poo. I'm taking this loving roadtrip in two weeks, and thestops along the way are primarily going to be Blackbirds on display. As I'll be in D.C., I called up the CIA headquarters at Langley and spoke at length about how I am a huge nerd for the Blackbird and Oxcart, how I need to see them all before I die and that's what I'm trying to do, and asked if there was any way to visit their facility and see the A-12 they have on display (the one they ganked from Minnesota). I was politely told no. Stupid CIA always has to ruin all my fun. But the lady said she would gladly send me a pamphlet on the A-12. I accepted, and less than a week later I got a loving 55-page, full-color BOOK. Seriously. Call them up and get free Oxcart stuff.
