Anyone able to tell how the AN/APG-79 compares to the -77? Think Australia's getting them for the s-bugs. As an aside, I remember someone from saab talked about putting a split receiver aperture in the E further down the line. Take note that I have no idea what any of those words mean.

That reminds me of something I wondered years ago, how different are industrial units from aero-propulsors? As in could an industrial producer create a competitive jet engine (if they made a serious effort) (and were as stingy with money as the US Senate is to LockMart)?

I'm not sure how much it is worth, but Russian authorities say they are looking at pilot error or mechanical failure over terrorism at this time. How long after? I seem to remember 'loss of contact shortly after take-off' being disturbingly common with Tu-130/150 variants.

I had flown airshows and competed in aerobatic competition, so BFM/ACM was actually quite sedate compared to my experience. Entirely awesome. It's getting late here in Sweden, so I won't ask to many questions now. I'm shure every one else is more than happy to fill in. But me personally, whatever you have to say about comparisons with foreign air forces an materiel is extra interesting. Potential adverserial as much as allied, and considering you were in the 65th... mhmm, very very interested indeed. And if there is classified reports of Un being alot more petty and narcissistic (ie. face/honour/respect obsessed) like you say, then that pushes the calculus the wrong way. For us. Sorry I just got flash backs from "Threads" Just, there's one unfortunate circumstance about a potential conflict with the DPRK: they've built bunkers since '94 like a paranoid schizophrenic on crack. They are supposedly more built up than either Switzerland or Sweden was in the hay days. Also (lastly), your description of computer assisted sim combat reminds me a lot of what we had for the tanks back when I lived that life. Really interesting stuff!

Nice piece of fish posted:How "built up" was Sweden really? I know about some of the bunker stuff, but even as a neigbouring nation I don't think we're really privvy to even all of the rumors. Getting the relevant numbers are more tricky than it seems, and rumors are even harder to quantify, but pointing to the basic facts of Sweden in the 70's should still be a bit effective: Sweden had (at least) twice the mil.budget of either nor/dk/fi, a much greater land area available for operations (or guerilla/stay behind activity), solid granite bedrock everywhere but scania, an independent arms industry (as long as we got american tech and petroleum products), and would after mobilization have 1mil men under arms, and altogether 2.5mil personnel utilized for the war effort. The army alone was organized into some 40+ full brigades. It wouldn't have been enough to win a war, but remember that Sweden had a population of 8mil at the time. More than a quarter would be directly organized into the war org. and one in eight as a soldier.

TheFluff posted:The Swedish datalink system for transmitting radar targets from ground installations to fighters did so with 103-bit data packets transmitted over a 3000 bits/second tone signaling system, starting in 1962. The packets were addressed to a specific fighter, so a single link controlling 30 fighters would have enough bandwidth for one update per second for each of them. It was completely unencrypted but had simple jamming and spoofing resistance in that the receiver antennas on the aircraft could be set to a directional mode focused to the rear, the idea being that the interceptor would almost always be between the ground installation and the approaching target.
