Unwritten is consistently the most 'Wow!' book in my pull every month. I'm always learning something literary from it, as well as loving the overall story. There was a moment when I thought it was going to turn into nothing but a horror story, but it directed away from that. It seems to not HAVE a particular genre to it.

In other Vertigo thoughts, I cannot loving WAIT for I, Zombie.

Greek Street seems like it could be good. I just can't get into a book where the main character has sex with his mother and then kills her in the first issue. Couldn't you choose a more sympathetic protagonist? It doesn't help that a lot of the book is really predictable if you know anything about the original Greek stories. I did read the first 5 issues, but gave up after that.

I had the same problem, only I checked out after the first issue.

Unwritten #12 was just brilliant. The first issue where they stepped away from Tommy to show the greater picture (#5) almost put me off the book, especially coming hard on the heels of #4's murderfest. But I came back and kept trucking and now it's those type of issues I think I look forward to most, where the writer explores the concept of the story.

I went to the Vertigo presentation here at ECCC, they made it clear what sort of book I,Zombie was from the start. Cute :3: I like the art, and I think I'm gonna dig the story, too.

Any more recommendations for something similar? I have Sandman and Preacher, Hellblazer has always been tempting but there's so MUCH of it, Swamp Thing is one I've been meaning to read but it's a bit of an arse to find collected, Animal Man has been well spoken of

Dunno if it's similar, but I really enjoyed Enigma recently. It's just 1 trade collected.

i, Zombie is cute. I wouldn't say it's deep and must-read, but it has a sort of early Buffy flavor that makes it a fun, light timewaster. And the art's just amazing, of course.

It works for me because I've read that sort of novel my whole life.

I enjoyed Unwritten this week, less for the story aspects, because it only moved the story forward a quarter inch, but for pushing the boundaries of the medium.

The last two issues of Unwritten have really not worked for me. Fell asleep reading this month's, twice. Granted I'm a little tired due to finals in night school but still.

Hopefully it will pick up now that Tommy's falling into the texts.

Oh my God, guys, look at this. Unwritten to double-ship monthly starting in November.

quote:

So after The Unwritten #31 with a main narrative story, readers will get The Unwritten #31.5 focusing on a back-story. Then #32 will return to the main narrative, with #32.5 following with a back-story.

Guest artists will help out on the first ".5" issue, as well as the following back-stories as needed — although no artists have yet been named.

quote:

Newsarama: Extra issues shipped between regular issues? Was this a case of you having so many ideas about the back-story that you couldn't cram it all into the main story?

Peter Gross: Yeah, something like that. We kept talking about little back-stories we'd like to do. And we've always liked doing our one-off issues. They've always been really popular with everyone. And we have a bunch of other back-story things we want to do, but every time we talk about getting them in there, we realize it would slow the main storyline down.

I was frustrated with it, and I started bringing it up with our editor. And I said, "Wouldn't it be great if we could do a few issues of these stories somehow staggered so it wouldn't slow down the main story's pace?" And they said, "Let's do it!"

Mike Carey: The other fact that fed into this was that we'd already been discussing with Karen [Berger] the possibility of doing a mini-series. A freestanding mini-series along with the regular monthly book. We got as far as doing quite a bit of planning for that.

Then suddenly it hit us that if we were going to have those extra issues, we could do something a lot more ambitious with them.

I like these guys. I like the way they think, the way they plan, the way they push the edges of the medium just a little bit. Can't wait.

Finished Joe the Barbarian and it was okay. Morrison's writing was kind of uneven and it felt kind of rushed in places, but Sean Murphy was knocking poo poo out of the park all day/everyday, I mean goddamn. That book is so pretty. It could have been scripted by anyone and it would have been worth my time because of the art.

The story wasn't all bad, I thought it said some things about grief pretty eloquently through the Queen Bree character, but I just think it got to the end before anything got into a rhythm or you ever actually knew who any of the people were. I'll just say again, Sean Murphy is dynamite.

His art is AWESOME. Just don't read anything he says.

I might give you a nod for We3, which is basically The Incredible Journey crossed with Robocop, but what's traditional about a story where a young boy hallucinates while on the verge of a diabetic coma?

Actually, the Joe the Barb story was utterly familiar to me, not as a 1:1 comparison to any particular story, but similar to a lot of YA fiction I read growing up. I enjoyed it but it didn't make me light up with its originality.

Well, since you're asking in the Vertigo thread, I might suggest the first 40ish issues of Unwritten, by Mike Carey and um, Peter Gross I think. There should be about 4 collected editions for that.
