I just came across the band Yezda Urfa, and after hearing good stuff about their first album, Boris, I decided to buy it, only to realize that it is very difficult to find in anything other than vinyl, assuming that it was ever even released on CD. It took me a while, but I found it and I really like it.

Anyway, they are often described as a mix between Yes and Gentle Giant (another band I strongly recommend if you're down for a little weirdness now and then), and I just finished uploading the album to youtube, if anyone wants to have a listen. The songs have a good deal of variety, so if you don't like the first one you hear, try listening to a couple of the other ones: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhKa17YOLwk&list=PLC65A7A6EC67DAEA4

I'm usually not that open to the more modern prog artists, and that's probably because I'm just stubborn, but I just started listening to Beardfish, and I must admit, I'm into their sound. They've got a good capacity for humor, their instrumentals are really tight, and they know how to channel that 70's prog sound when they want to. Here are a few examples that I've been jamming to recently:

Ask Someone Who Knows: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zsl5jmPPuew&feature=related

Year of the Knife: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3PMIJNZi9E&feature=related

South of the Border (this is one of their more humor-oriented songs, and it's a bit Zappa-esque): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-d552_v06xw

I'm glad this thread has given Beardfish a few nods, I've been completely devouring them since I got Mammoth and The Void for Christmas. Their sound is moving away from a sort of eclectic prog sound to more of a prog metal thing, but I think they pull it off really well. The Void is one of the best albums I've heard in a LONG time.

Speaking of eclectic prog, can anyone recommend some bands along the lines of Gentle Giant and Yezda Urfa? I really like their sound, but pretty much none of my friends are into prog so I'm having some trouble finding similar bands.

Yezda Urfa remind me of Roxy & Elsewhere/One Size Fits All-era Zappa almost as much as they do Gentle Giant, though you've probably already heard that.

Stormy Six are also kind of Gentle Giant-like as a whole, though their vocals aren't at all similar.

Oh, I'm quite familiar with the Roxy & Elsewhere lineup, it's probably my favorite Zappa lineup. I'll give Stormy Six a shot, though.
