Another prog band with female vocals that I've been into lately would be White Willow. Mostly Autumn and newer Anathema also feature some quality female vocals on several songs.

Well if we're going with worst Rush song I think "Rivendell" might want to have words with you. On a more current note, I've been recently listening to Ancestors' "In Dreams and Time" which is a kind of psychedelic sludge-metal meets analog synths and piano. A nice departure from the typical prog-metal wank-fest.

If you're looking for classic Yes/ELP-sounding Christian themed prog you might enjoy Glass Hammer?

Anekdoten, amazingly, just released a new album. Not breaking a lot of new ground sound-wise, although its a lot denser and heavier than their last couple of releases. Here's an instrumental featuring Per Wiberg (former keyboardist from Opeth), Theo Travis, and Marty Wilson-Piper (The Church). Also I had no idea until recently that Haken released an EP last year, a reworking of an earlier demo from the mid 2000's. Really excellent stuff. Both albums are on Spotify also. Excited for the new BTBAM, they seem to be heading in the right direction. No discussion of the new Steven Wilson? Just got it in the mail last week, still digesting it.

Lex Rex was the album that finally sold me on Glass Hammer back in the day. Great production and songwriting even if it is rather derivative. And lets not forget the album they recorded inside the Prancing Pony

1985 could be the best thing they've ever done.

New Pain of Salvation just got released and is really good. I've been turned off from them since BE but the new album slays. It has a lot of their old Remedy Lane-era complexity and heaviness but with more raw grit. Much better than the Road Salt albums which I listened to once and forgot about. I guess Daniel had a near-death experience with a flesh eating bacteria so it's a concept album related to that experience. Have a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_qZpLgvdOI

Gianthogweed posted:Watershed is probably my favorite Opeth album. Although I really like Ghost Reveries too. I love it when they bring in the mellotron. You might like the Finnish band Perihelion Ship. Opeth worship with lots of Hammonds and moogs and trons. but very well executed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6B3q1wY9L4

RIP to a real one. Totally redefined rock drumming and influenced so many artists. His impact on music will live on for a long, long time.

Haken is releasing an album called "Virus" in June. If the preview track is any indication it looks to be rather heavy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EmbYo65Pbs

Not saying they're phoning it in, but I saw BOC at a casino a few years back and Buck Dharma literally checked his watch just before the Reaper solo to see how much time was left in their set.

The latest Ayreon and Pain of Salvation releases have left me a little disappointed. They're fine, but each felt like a step below their predecessors. What are some good new releases?

Speaking of remixes, I am listening to the 20th anniversary remix of The Perfect Element. It's very solid, bringing out little instrumental nuances everywhere, and much wider and brighter than the original (which I always thought was a little muddy on the low end but that could be taste). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vy-E5IvLn-U

Seems like it could be happening. I mean, here's what Cedric said in 2019 about a possible reunion:Cedric posted:What it’s NOT going to be is your ‘fav member lineup’ playing their ‘classic records’ in full etc. Maybe we’ll play old poo poo, who knows how we feel. Just remember our past campaigns never relied on playing requests or going fully backwards ...it’s new poo poo, new people, left turns , tangent inconsistencies, mazapan dreams and churro wishes. I will say this though, when ORL played me a grip of new poo poo I loving cried. Like Claire Daines in Romeo & Juliet cried. Yeah it was loving weird. It’s in its infancy right now. No deadlines, no ball tripping, no drama, just 2 grown rear end men using essential oils and bold new perfumes shooting ideas and scooting their rear end across the loving lawn trying to get rid of these worms. So, uh, yeah that seems pretty clear that something is up!

In case anyone missed it, the new PRR album is out, and its really, really good. Seems more structured, complex, and heavier than their last, which was also excellent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09OmGyGWjmc

Here's a new thing that's pretty cool. Prog-metal band from China, very distinct sound. Ethereal vocals with a mix of traditional prog and 'djent'-esque rhythms. Hangs together quiet well if that's your jam. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoKL23zNg7w
