For anyone itching for new Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson's new album isn't as heavy as most PT stuff, but it's definitely some drat good prog-rock. It's two full discs, too!

Haha I compare PT to Nine Inch Nails sometimes in that they both have some absolutely eye-rolling lyrics, but nobody listens to either of them for their deep, introspective lyrics. Fans like them because their music loving rules.

Would those bands be better with lyrics that are actually half decent? Probably. At least somewhat. But they don't have the worst lyrics I've ever heard, I guess, and they're fun to laugh at.

I love the album, but I was listening to the title track in my car the other day, and it sounded downright bad. I guess that was the first time I'd listened to it in my car. It sounded like the low end overpowered everything in the mix and it sounded really muddy and weird. Which I don't remember it sounding like on any other speakers. But all my other music sounds fine in my car

Anyway, I'll be interested to see how the remaster fares.

The ITCOTCK remaster is blowing my loving mind. I'm comparing the remaster to the original, listening to part of the new version and then part of the old version, and the old version really does sound like poo poo in comparison.

So glad to have a version of this album that sounds this good. drat.

That's exactly how I felt when I heard them :3: I haven't been listening to them for nearly as long as you have (a few years as opposed to a few decades), but still, I was blown away by how awful they made all the other versions sound.

I haven't even heard all that much of Dream Theater's music before, but I know of Portnoy's personality and this sounds exactly like something he would do. Completely insane, and yet incredible.

Would it be wrong for me to say that Steven Wilson & co. put on some of the tightest live performances out there? The one time I saw Porcupine Tree live and every live video I've seen of them performing live proves to me that, despite having a ton going on on-stage, they don't seem to miss a beat. It all comes together in this grandiose, technically impressive and beautiful package that most performers I've seen don't come close to rivaling.

It sucks because I've been on a big PT kick recently. I've been re-listening to every album of theirs that I have, I rewatched the Arriving Somewhere DVD, I got the Anesthetize Blu-Ray and watched that for the first time, etc. And I want to like Steven's solo stuff, but I've just never been that impressed by it like I am with PT's stuff. It's okay, I guess, but like after listening to Hand Cannot Erase once, I don't feel like I'll ever feel the need to listen to the whole thing ever again. With a lot of PT songs, they get stuck in my head from time to time, I've probably listened to them at least at least a hundred times by this point and they don't get old for me. For example: I've been listening to Deadwing for probably like 9 years at this point, but most of the songs from that album still sound just as loving rad to me today as they did when I first heard them. I've never felt that with any SW solo stuff.

I saw them in 2016 (they were touring for The Color Before the Sun) and that was a really fun show, but I wish I'd been more into them before seeing them and learned more of their songs. Amputechture is excellent and has some insane lyrics (for example "The kiosk in my temporal lobe is shaped like Rosalynn Carter"). Bedlam has some great tracks (like the above mentioned Wax Simulacra) even though it's not their best. Blacklight Shine is the only one of the 3 singles that's stuck in my head. It's still not the old long, proggy, instrumentally interesting Mars Volta that I fell in love with like 18 years ago back when I first heard Deloused, but at least it's catchy. The other 2 (Graveyard Love and Vigil) did absolutely nothing for me.

These singles feel like the band is going for more of a mainstream appeal than they ever have in the past, which is weird. I know they won a Grammy and they were on Guitar Hero so it's not like they're totally obscure, but still, their music felt more niche even when all that happened.

I dont think it has anything to do with chasing mainstream appeal - Omar and Cedric both talked a lot about wanting to make poppier, more concise music during the promo cycles for Octahedron and Noctourniquet, and Omar's solo music from the years between Noct and now certainly show that he's focused on that. I think this is just where they're at artistically.
Yeah, that's fair. I just hope Cedric keeps writing wild as gently caress lyrics on this album. I'm listening to The Bedlam in Goliath now and currently on Cavalettas:

"I am a deaf con of angora goats
Warning you all who pass this mote
It's only a matter of folding time and space
Before I become your epidemic
Is this your first time at my conventicle?

New Mars Volta album is out. They did a piece for the New York Times recently in which Omar says this is basically their version of a pop record and they were influenced by Peter Gabriel and David Bowie.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/07/arts/music/the-mars-volta.html

It's kinda wild that the longest song on here is just over 4 minutes long. I'm so used to their stuff being like twice as long if not longer.

I'm on my first listen now and it's not bad but it'll still probably go down as my least favorite TMV record. It's nice to hear Omar and Cedric together again, but it feels like they've produced way more interesting results together in past TMV albums and even in stuff like Antemasque. Like that article says, though, they're both 47 now, so I can't blame them for not wanting to make the same-ish structured songs for the rest of their lives.
