Finally beat Mankind Divided after playing it and shelving it on and off. But this past week I just binged through it. Not as bad as I initially thought it was. It was actually pretty fun.

Despite all that, this game really really made me want to play Human Revolution again. I have some serious nostalgia for that game.

I just wish DXMD were a complete game. If they'd bothered finishing it, might have turned out as well as DXHR. What a shame.

No kidding. Now any plans for the sequel have been shelved. It was a good series. What a rotten way to die.

Yeah, RIP

Seriously Mankind Divided was more HR and I really enjoyed it. The lack of an ending is of course disappointing but I can only blame the publisher for that.

I was curious to see how they would integrate more and more of the original Deus Ex characters and themes into upcoming games. Oh well!

I would have also liked to have seen the original DE remade in a new engine while leaving the levels and story intact. But I guess you don't need a big studio for that, as the Black Mesa guys have shown. On the other hand, I remember hearing that Black Mesa still cost over a million bucks despite being an amateur project.

Also, it's not actually done (as far as I know; have they released Xen yet?)

Yeah that's correct, I believe the Xen update was originally planned to be released in the summer, but last I checked, that's been postponed to the end of the year (Winter 2017).

What ever happened with that mod anyways? It (asoundingly) came out and I downloaded it and played a few levels, then like a month later it's for sale on Steam for like $20. Did they release it for free and then change their mind right after?

I'm bitter about black mesa source because I remember some of my favorite parts being trimmed down.

I can't hate on Mankind Divided because the story does have a beginning and a end. Yeah more games are supposed to fill the gap between this and Deus Ex, but I know the end of the story, it won't kill me to simply fill in the gaps myself until something else comes.

If I'm not mistaken, the mod version remains available, but it won't receive things the commercial product has (additional multiplayer features, the forever-imminent Xen update, updated engine aspects, etc.)

Like Surface Tension, yeah? I haven't played Black Mesa in a few years, but I remember this particular part being a pretty big point of contention. Fortunately, it sounds like the developers have significantly expanded on a few previously...curtailed...areas, so hopefully it'll be better when the Xen update hits.

The Black Mesa mod hit its five-year anniversary a little while ago, it came out in 2012 incredibly. In the time between then and now they've still not finished Xen, and they've mostly remade their remake. There's also Black Mesa Uncut which adds back in all the cut levels from HL1 at the same quality standard as the rest of the mod, which is good.

And yes, the mod came out for free, Valve went "drat this is good, okay you can sell it," so they did.

They released a beta version of what was originally planned to be a free mod, then Valve decided they could go ahead and commercialise it, which they did.

It's the best version of HL1 so it's definitely worth the money.

Isn't the delay on releasing Xen because it won't be a straight remake, but refusing rd levels more in line with the rest of the game?

Xen sucked so I never cared. Nothing from when you leave Earth was any fun anyway, not having it in the game isn't a loss. I know how it ends.

How the hell do I get Revision working on steam?

Hadn't played it in a long time and was gonna set it up on Steam. It worked well on GOG, but I messed up the update on the Steam version thinking it had softlocked so I stopped it halfway (there was a black screen that didn't even allow the explorer to work. Had to restart).

Now every time I try to reinstall it, it doesn't complete and complains about a file content lock, so it doesn't fully install.

Anyone have a workaround?

Playing Human Revolution for the first time made me want to play the original classic again, but when I play it there's always some technical issue. Whenever I run Deus Ex on Direct3dx or opengl there's either not enough light so I can't see or everything gets covered with this weird gray filter and there's too much light. When I use software rendering or glide, the lighting is fine but everything clips through the ground. How should I fix this problem? I'm using kentie's launcher.

There are some weapon mods you can get from arms dealers, but that's about it. I think the last one is in Paris' intro area, and after that money becomes entirely pointless even though though the game continues to throw it at you.

I mean, that’s the case now, after we’ve all been playing this game for nearly two decades. Going in the first time, I definitely agonized over my spending on mods and ammo.

I actually once found a guide for vanilla Deus Ex that showed how to maximize experience. I'll see if I can find the bookmark.

Edit: I found this, but I could have sworn that I had something with screenshots as well.

I think part of the reason I often go with the Dark Age ending is Bob Page's desperation when he realizes I'm going to blow the place up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DeI5HraCs0&t=382s

I just got done playing Revision and it's pretty good overall. There were maybe one or two points where I think they made things a bit unintuitive, or more visually complex but not as interesting or memorable visually, but overall I'd say it was a nice improvement over stock. I think Paris and especially the Cathedral were much better.
