The late 90s in particular was pretty wild for licensed cartoons getting surprising budgets but also screwed over in timeslots. Anyone else remember the Matrix cartoon? Which I'm pretty sure had less than nothing to do with the movies.

No. There was something about secret agents fighting evil cyborgs, at least one of which had a tragic backstory. Which as for late 90s/early 00s forgotten animated series probably doesn't narrow it down.

I finished revisiting an old show from when I was a kid, and it's really weird so I feel compelled to post.

The Big Boy and Rusty the Boy Robot was a show that was made by the people who were also behind Extreme Ghostbusters, Jackie Chan Adventures, Godzilla the Series, and Men in Black the series. A lot of shows that had similar aesthetic styles of realistic designs and muted colors.

It stars these two robots, one a big guy with kind of a retro-future aesthetic, and the other basically a knock-off Astroboy. I think their dynamic is meant to evoke like the Fat Man and Little Boy atomic bombs, and Big Guy does throw around WW2-style bombs a lot. They fight various threats, mostly giant monsters. There's a whole thing where Big Guy apparently had a longer history of defending America and Rusty is a newer robot that really looks up to him and aspires to be like Big Guy. Only thing is, Big Guy wasn't actually artificially intelligent, that was just a thing they told everybody for propaganda purposes, Big guy is actually piloted by a human, voiced by Jim Hanks, and Rusty doesn't know and thinks Big Guy is just like him, and people do their best to not let him in on the truth.

The whole thing is very militaristic, often kind of a satire of the military industrial complex. Everything Big Guy says is like it's out of a propaganda reel. Some episodes actually reveal something's gone wrong with Big Guy when he gets slightly less patriotic, and there is one episode that involves having to correct history when a time-travel incident makes the American Revolution fail, and without the American military industrial complex, Earth is left vulnerable to be conquered by aliens. It's really something. It's a big example of immediately pre-9/11 views on the American military. Very immediately, the show ran from September, 1999 to March, 2001. Just a weird point in history right before a whole lot of national opinions changed. The distributor of the show even folded on October 25, 2001.

Rusty, as the dumb young kid character is often annoying, but there's a weirdness to it, kind of like he's intentionally uncanny valley, and not quite properly sentient. There's an episode where some alien robots trying to act organic show up, and Rusty just laughs at them because he doesn't want to be human at all. All the other characters are mature adults, like Dr. Slate, Rusty's creator and top scientist on the show, or Donavan, the moneygrabbing CEO of the company that made Rusty, and his talking monkey. When Rusty's not around, it really doesn't seem like much of a kids' show at all, and even when he is around it sometimes gets weirdly mature. Dr. Slate and Big Guy's pilot have an interesting relationship. The show can also get pretty intense, I think some people die onscreen, and there definitely are some scenes of robots getting torn apart in a way that's almost gory.

I think there's a lot of references on the show that I don't get, but at least I caught some Dr. Strangelove when Big Guy rides a missile. There's even an apparent pre-reference like the AI gone rogue named EDI who threatens to blow up the moon. The plots can get pretty weird, like when a scientist played by Tim Curry mutates into a giant brain-eating spider or when and underground race of lava men plan to invade the surface world. The longest overarching villains are the Legion ex Machina, a shadowy cabal of androids played by Clancy Brown, Clancy Brown, Clancy Brown, Dean Haglund, Clancy Brown, and Clancy Brown.

I remember this show. Funny enough, something brought it to mind earlier before I saw your post. I remember liking it as a kid. I never noticed all the military propaganda as a kid. I remember just liking it. I literally barely remember a single goddamn thing. The only thing coming to mind is a scene where Rusty is joking about how tough us robots are to Big Guy, and Big Guy pretends to be okay with it but his pilot is actually like got a broken arm and is playing along through his pain. Some vague memories of Rusty being confused when Big Guy's pilot got hurt or sick, causing Big Guy to malfunction when a Robot shouldn't be affected. I don't remember a single plot.

He voices a major character in Owl House (King). He's voiced some one-off characters in Amphibia.

The creators of both shows were storyboarders for Gravity Falls before getting the opportunity to create their own shows. The influence of GF at Disney Channel now is kind of like the influence of Adventure Time at Cartoon Network in the 10's where the network's used the staff behind a successful show to breed new successful shows.

I mean they managed to turn the turd that was Godzilla 98 into solid gold with Godzilla The Series, made what should have been a terrible idea with Extreme Ghostbusters into something great, and made what should have been a tire fire on par with other Celebrity vanity projects of the past way better than it had any right being with Jackie Chan Adventures

About their only major flaws as a studio were either shows getting canned early and not getting proper finales and/or ending on cliffhangers(Spectacular Spider-Man probably being the most glaring example here), or in the case of their longer shows like MIB or JCA there being some seasonal rot towards the end

solid animation from Mercury Filmworks, about as good as modern western TV animation can get. I know people wish it looked like a 1940s cartoon, but this still looks real nice.

the voices I'm having a hard time getting past though. I would have preferred cuter voices for cuphead and mughead rather than "why i outta, i'll moidalize him" adult voices

It looks... fine. The animation is decent but I'm not sold on the writing based on what's in the trailer. At the very least I don't anticipate it being a trainwreck.

I think the novelty of that would wear off in about five seconds. Besides, Disney isn't where Cuphead gets most of its inspiration from.

I dunno if the trailer would be representative, I've got the same 'cut to pieces by the marketing department' vibe that most movies get nowadays where they have to put all the worst jokes in the trailer even if they have to make them up.

SlothfulCobra

I feel like a proper Cuphead cartoon should have the roughness of some of the first talking cartoons where they didn't really know how most of the technology worked and also speak in hyper-regionalized archaic New York accents that they occasionally mutter and hide their mouths because lip-syncing is hard.

And then it should be kinda blurred like it's a strip of film that only barely survived through the past 90 years.

And a scene where a cigar blows up in a character's face that has clearly been edited to no longer be a blackface joke.

One thing that I think helped JCA be better than it could have been was that making it was fulfilling a life long dream of Jackie's of having a cartoon starring himself*, thus actual effort being put into it

*well at least the main character being modeled after himself, he'd originally wanted to voice his cartoon counterpart too but quickly realized his English had too strong of an accent to to work in a cartoon context, which is why they instead had him do an occasional live action PSA at the end of episodes

The Ringo Starr and George Carlin narrations are really nice and comforting and the neat crashes and damage scenes on the show made a lot more sense after I found out that David Mitton used to work with Gerry Anderson doing the pyrotechnics for Thunderbirds.

Something about the series that sticks with me is absolutely dumb, but it's how at some point Henry needed special coal (in the original model series) and then decades later Gordon made a reference to it. "Don't tell me Henry needs special coal again!"

Percy is annoyingly optimistic. James and Gordon are insufferably conceited. Thomas is adorably naive. I love Hiro and Stephen and (through King of the Railway) the new engines. I even love how that thing around the front of Emily's boiler looks like hair.
