There was a time where even mentioning the show was a probatable offense, if I remember correctly.

People used to get straight up banned for trying to be cheeky with MLP related memes in the relevant PYF thread (which explicitly allowed everything), years after the show stopped being relevant so yeah SA definitely was pretty down on the whole topic well after everyone else got over it, 4chan included

Anyway, been watching Amphibia this week and wow this is actually not bad so far. Nothing stunning but a solid 8/10, a fun cartoon to watch. Still crazy they're just dumping the whole season in one go through the summer but hey apparently that's in vogue these days, so gently caress it.

Wait am I missing something? Why did MLP appeal to fascists?

It appealed to nerds, some of whom were creepy, some of whom, were chuds. The biggest internet communities for Bronies to congregate on included Equestria Daily which I think had porn and 4chan's /mlp/ which, while SFW, was still on 4chan and considered its own special containment zone for Pony stuff.

It's more that the horrible nerd du jour changed from ponies to alt-right stuff and Twitter with Anime Avatars.

I remember someone, probably in this thread, had a pretty compelling argument that MLP's problem is that it's pretty straightforward, uncomplicated personalities of the cast meant that alt-right could imprint whatever they wanted. They were safe and approachable, and those are appealing to fascists.

The ponies appeared to have a laissez-faire capitalist society for a while, which attracted a huge fanbase of libertarian assholes, and as we all know all the libertarians converted to nazis the instant Trump was elected so that’s where all the nazi bronies came from.

Exploration is ill-advised.
The actual content of the show never mattered given a repeated theme has been hammering home that racial diversity is good and getting along with people different from you is an absolute requirement for society to continue to exist, and reactionaries will destroy society.

Have we talked about the Dragon Prince much? I wasn't impressed with the first season, was hopeful on the second, only to be disappointed probably even more so. Amusingly enough, it turns out the animation, which was a pretty big turnoff when they unveiled the first trailer was actually the least of my criticisms.

After Korra and now this, I'm starting to think TLA was a once in a generation fluke.

I don't remember exactly, but think it was the Angry Video Game Nerd who made a good point during the time when the new Ghostbusters came out and was getting lots of backlash. He pointed out how lots of people said they would have killed for another Ghostbusters movie that had the original cast, director, writer, staff members, etc. But the thing is....that DID happen, and it was called Ghostbusters 2, which everyone hated.

This isn't unique to either Ghostbusters or with the Avatar crew by any means, but it's a good reminder how sometimes even having all the right people won't mean it'll result in the right product.

I'd rather the creatives from Avatar go off to new projects to try new things than circling the same spot hoping for lightning to strike again. I'm definitely not looking forward to Netflix's coming remake.

It kinda seems like Dave Filoni and Giancarlo Volpe were the people who worked on Avatar who had the most success afterwards, although I can't really say much from just poking at IMDB entries.

It's more about trying to achieve other creative objectives instead of trying to create something in the specific mold of a previous show (though you can have some success in that).

I do think the whole 'from the people who worked on X' thing is rather fallible, because more often than not it's just a marketing thing and it rarely reflects the person's intent, at least from what I've experienced, especially in the 'followups to Avatar realm'. Heck, I think this even applies to Korra too, though in that situation there was far more holding that show back than just the public's expectation of what an Avatar show should look like.

I mean, a major theme of the show is about growing up and part of that is having a bunch of crushes on people you'll never ever have a shot with. Plus it did go somewhere and was basically resolved when Dipper and Wendy had their honest conversation where Wendy told him it's never gonna happen but he's a good kid.

Now if you mean why did neither twin get a real love interest beyond gags, I'm like 90% sure that they would've gone somewhere if Hirsch hadn't suffered creative burnout.

The reoccurring villain of the show gets caught trying to change everyone into human versions of themselves. He declares when cornered that he had to do it to save everyone from “whats to come” before the dinosaur kicks his rear end. He wakes up later and the world starts falling apart. He falls into a hole in reality and presumably dies/ceases to exist. The implication is that he knew the show is ending and was trying to save everyone by rebooting it into a new form.

Amphibia is scratching that Gravity Falls itch pretty well. It's got cute characters, that are close, an old grandpa and a weird world.

I'm digging it so far. Even the opening is VERY much like Gravity Falls. You also get to hear Gravity Falls voices. Gideon's Dad is the town mayor.
