I never liked the sexist water bending stuff. Everything else in the Avatar world is gender equal. We see no discrimination in any position or job - apart from between warring nations. Then, out of nowhere, the Water nation decides to ignore half of their benders. You'd think such idiotic notions would have been thrown aside during 100 years of war as a 'luxury' they couldn't afford. But bigotry is nothing if not stupid, I suppose.

You can't read, but you can have dream knowledge of what a text says. For instance, you might look at a street sign and know it says "Waterfall Lane" but you won't be reading the letters and forming it into a word. In the same way you might find yourself in a store in a dream and know "Oh, this is the store my friend from primary school's dad owns which is also a Subway restaurant inside the Pentagon and has magic crystals inside a cave at the back."

For once, I'd like to see someone come out of time dilation and go, "God, I just don't care any more. I spent an eternity alone and had to re-evaluate everything. You're all nothing to me now." Then go off and live in the wilderness Grizzly Adams style.

And I suppose you could argue Steve Rogers kinda did it when he went back in time to be with Peggy Carter. Though in his case, it was spending 70 years as a fuckboi rather than living in a hell dimension.

PhazonLink posted:"The White Lotus is expected to have taken one of the twins and raised her in wealth," oh boy the WL did the same mistake as Korra and having a sheltered nepobaby avatar. Sounds like they watched Star Wars: The Acolyte and decided to try and remake it with a story that doesn't suck. I wonder if both twins will be benders or they'll go the obvious route and have the Avatar given everything (except two legs) and the other have no powers and be raised in poverty and grow to hate their sister.

Ghost Leviathan posted:It's like my recent bitching about how the problem with the Star Wars sequels is that the fundamental purpose of Star Wars is to rip off whatever you feel like and add lasers and spaceships. You can't just make Star Wars flavoured Star Wars, that's a sandwich without any filling. And that's a mistake both fanfic and EU authors and disinterested c-suites and their failkids can and do make. That's all I could think about watching episode 7 rip-off episode 4. They just missed the point of Star Wars so drat hard. War films, spy films, samurai films and cowboy films - these are all Star Wars. Star Wars films themselves however, are not what should inspire other Star Wars films.

Kids Next Door was a ridiculous premise that somehow, almost against its own will, turned into a cohesive well-plotted world with overarching plots of what it means to be a child in a world which pays you little mind, the socially ignored cruelty of adolescence and loss of innocence and compassion which all to often comes with adulthood. In a giant treehouse.

I mean, lava bending does the same. Here's some dirt, now it's 2000°. Also, expanded hundreds of times its initial volume. Though, to be fair - every other element gets one big super version, but Fire gets two - lightning and magic eyeball booms.

Just happened across the first episode of a new series in development called Spice Frontier. Set in a far future where Earth in lost for unknown reasons, a human travels the galaxy to rediscover the lost secrets of Earth cuisine. Hunting ingredients and recipes, being hunted in turn by groups of badguys for unknown reasons. The first episode seemed like a lot of fun. Misfit crew, alien robot with a past, deadly worlds, farming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeAqnHywrx8

Gravity Falls was an absolute gem of a show. I have to go rewatch it again soon. Great opening theme, too. If your show has a kickass opening theme, it immediately goes up several points in my opinion of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2DUpDxFJyg I remember someone did a rap version over the top of the theme when the show was airing and it was really catchy, but now there're a million people with a million lovely lyric versions of the theme, so good luck finding it.

I had the Baron Karza toy as a kid that let you swap his parts with a horse and swap the horse's legs with wheels. It was cool because all the Baron's limbs were held on with magnets. Faithful adaptions or not, it all hinges on whether you're making a good, fun movie or show. And fans of various franchises all know that adaptions are usually hollow trash made by people with absolute contempt for the source material. And it shines through in every single moment of the show or movie. That's what upsets people. I have no idea if the One Piece live action is faithful or not, but I can tell you it was an absolute blast to watch and I can't wait for series 2. The Fallout series was a very faithful adaptation it was also great to watch with a great cast and great plot. Again, can't wait for series 2. The Halo adaptation definitely was not a faithful adaptation - it was also poo poo. I somehow made it through two series, glad there won't be a third. The Cowboy Bebop live action was just, just loving trash. An interesting cast to be sure but everything else just fell flat. Hope they bury it where it can never hurt anyone ever again.

DoctorWhat posted:"Absolute contempt" How many times has some making an adaptation said they've never seen the source material? Yeah, it's a lot. And, yes, people bringing things like sci fi or fantasy to the screen have traditionally had nothing but contempt for the source material. They were "real" artists, how dare people expect them to deal with this. It'll never win an Oscar. gently caress me, Sir Alec Guinness and Star Wars is pretty much the dictionary definition of this. Or we could look at Shyamalan's adaptation of the Last Air Bender. No one needs to "get over" anything except yourself. I'm not going to pretend any of the shows I mentioned are great art. But the originals were fun. They were engaging. They set people's imaginations on fire. That's what matters to people going into a remake.
