Although I've never heard of Camo & Krooked I think that one of their newish remixes is pretty good, but it seems pretty love/hate with my friends, anyone agree with me:

The Mechabyte Podcasts are sometimes a little hard to find, but they give a good flavour of the darker, heavier side of eastern European/Russian DnB, which is where an awful lot of talent seems to flow from. Very much a different sound to what you might hear out in a club with artists like Andy C headlining.

Holy poo poo were you on target with the Mechabyte podcasts. The opening song on the first one (his own tune: Flame - Silencer) is unbelievably good. Highly recommended, at least as far as I've listened through them.

Serious, the guy is an incredibly talented producer. It's a shame that so little of that kind of stuff makes it this far west on wax, although if you dig a little you can find web releases. Check out mixes by IZM, and have a scout around this site for mixes that contain tracks by artists featured on the Mechabyte podcasts for more of the same:

Bit of an effort but so, so worth it when you find those ridiculous layered beats and raw basslines.

I used to play on a pirate in Wolverhampton (UK) for about a year back in 2000/01 as well as playing a few minor Midlands clubs over the years.

I stopped playing d&b a few years ago now and a lot of the modern stuff bores me but I've been an active junglist since the early nineties and still have a couple thousand records laying around.

I'll resist the urge to hate on Pendulum though and post some classics instead.

Optical solo tunes from the late 90s are among my favorites. I recently tracked down the Metalheadz comp this was on, so I could have a playable copy. Also, his remix of Bliss & Tumble is great for the technical sound, while his remix of Boom Boom Satellites around this time is another great example of his more dance floor aimed tunes.

Sorry to keep bringing up Pendulum in here, since it seems to be an even mix of love/hate, but it's all I know! I've been a fan of Pendulum for a few years and I've really fallen in love with the sound, but as far as getting into the rest of d'n'b, I don't know where to start. I haven't ever really received a definitive answer on what is closest to Pendulum, at least, the songs I'm in love with the most.

Slam would be categorized as dark/heavy, wouldn't it? What's most similar to that? I listened to a bit of the ones in the OP, and none of them were really that heavy. And what about the actual song Hold Your Colour? What bands are similar to that?

And what would you categorize Pendulum's "non" d'n'b songs as? Someone said breakbeat, but I'm not altogether convinced on that, yet.

Well now that I've posted that retardation, I'll make my way through the songs posted in this thread and see if anything tickles my fancy.

Its not dark its just cheesy jump-up and the best way to go from there is Sub Focus probably but theres songs by them in the OP so i dunno. If you don't like any of the other tracks in the OP and only Pendulum maybe dnb isn't for you to be honest.

"Fasten Your Seatbelts" and "Out Here" on their first album are definitely breakbeat tunes. As for the non-dnb stuff on 'In Silico', I have no idea, I actually haven't heard that album. Last tune of theirs I bought was "Axle Grinder".

As for similar artists, not sure how close you'll get to what they do, but maybe check out the other big acts like Sub Focus, Chase & Status, or maybe check out artists on labels like Technique Recordings (link: https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/label/detail/3419/technique_recordings), Viper Recordings (link: https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/label/detail/1757/viper_recordings), Breakbeat Kaos (they released the first Pendulum LP, link: https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/label/detail/913/breakbeat_kaos).

If it's mainly the drum'n'bass + guitars hybrid that you liked, then check out the artist Night Breed on Ram Records (link: https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/track/catalog/?contextType=artists&contextName=Night%20Breed&contextEntityId=3403), or some metal cross over tunes like Concord Dawn's "Raining Blood" (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2nHKpalCh4) or KC's "Archangel" (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqBcsTx8Qws) and "Destroyed" (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uG7rja3rrZA). It's not that I don't like any of the other tracks in the OP, but they're not like Pendulum, and that's where I want to start. And I haven't listened to all of them, either. Don't be. If it wasn't for Pendulum, DnB wouldn't have HALF the exposure it has today. True, they're no longer really DnB, but even the most hardened hater cannot deny the fact that they've had a massive influence on the entire genre.

If you're after a sound similar to Pendulum, try The Qemists. 'Hold The Q' is a really good album and the similarities with Pendulum are immediately apparent.

The Perfect High could easily have been an early Pendulum track and the drop is just SICK.

Lot's of VIP mixes don't get "released". Most of the time it's just to have something different in your arsenal rather than having the same version everybody else is dropping. People do eventually get a hold of them though, it trickles down from friends of big names that get the promo, then their friends bug them enough and get it, etc. etc. Ewun's Screw Up VIP was never "released" but I heard a few ATL DJ's playing it out. In contrast, Spor's - Knock You Down VIP was never released and I don't think I've ever heard it outside of a Spor mix.
