What is Windows Home Server?

Pretty much the best thing to come out of Microsoft in a long time. The data corruption bug has been fixed so please don't ask about it. Windows Home Server is built on the same codebase as Windows Server 2003 SP2. It includes almost all technologies found in Windows Server 2003 SP2 but has been modified in some areas to remove or limit features.

I will let Wikipedia tell you more about the cool stuff it has!

Features

The big one here is the Drive Extender:

The best part is that the hard drives are formatted as NTFS, so if your WHS dies you can plug in into your desktop and just copy over any of the date on the hard drive. If you want to read some more about how drive extender works, here are two articles.

What are these Add-Ins I keep hearing about?

Windows Home Server allows for developers to publish community and commercial add-ins designed to enhance the Windows Home Server with added functionality. There are quite a few good ones, I usually just read about the main blogs to see what has been released. Go here to download them. http://www.wegotserved.com/category/add-ins/

How do I use Windows Home Server?

Clients use the Windows Home Server connector software. You can then run Windows Home Server console and configure your backups. You can set a time block of the hours you would like to back up your machines. You can enable wake your computer up an hour or so before you wake up yourself. You can also specify folders do never backup if you so desire. If you have multiple computers, WHS will minimize the amount of data stored on the server because it backs up using cluster levels. Once you do a full backup of your client, every subsequent backup will just back up any files that have changed.

You can remote desktop directly into your WHS box, and run pretty much and Windows program you would like. I personally run SABnzbd, uTorrent, PS3 Media Server, Dropbox, and some add ins. I have been running my WHS box since the fall of 2007 24/7 365 and it's still trucking.

How do I acquire such fancy technology?

You can buy a prebuilt WHS box from many companies, or you can be one of the cool kids and just build your own out of the parts in your closet. You can get a 30 day trial for WHS and if you like it buy an OEM key at Newegg for $100.

Microsoft purchase/trial page
Newegg WHS OEM

Goon Thermopyle has pictures up of his cool home build here.

I heard there is a new version of WHS coming out!?

Windows Home Server 2011 (Vail) has been released, and is on MSDN now as well. WHS 2011 has no drive extender, but alternatives exist, Drive Bender is probably the most popular one.

Hardware Requirements:

quote:

* Vail is a 64-bit only operating system.
* System Requirements:
- 1.4 GHz x64 processor.
- 1 GB RAM
- At least one 160 GB hard drive.
* NTFS is the only supported file system.

Yes, the drives will need to be attached at all times. If you're constantly adding and removing the drives it will need to constant move the data on and off the drives before unplugging them, which can take hours each time.

I would not trust my data to such and old and lovely board like that.

Newegg has some good AMD and Intel combos for under $100. Fry's has some good in-store deals too.

Thanks I added this to the OP

They really dropped the ball I think regarding MCE support. The improvements to the disk extender look good, it isn't really a big deal about recovering as I am sure Microsoft or some developer will come out with a recovery tool.

Microsoft has so many awesome technologies, its such a shame that can't seem to get better integration between the platforms.

It really is a shame because after playing with the Vail preview in VMware, it feels 75% easier to use than WHS v1. I guess Microsoft is sacrificing a lot under the hood to get this into the hands of consumers who want something more simple to play with.
I'm happy to trade some performance and usage improvements for not being able to save data with an open source system. I am pretty sure Microsoft or some other coder will make a Windows recover tool for Vail hard drives.

Yeah I meant disk space. I would think if you could get the install down quite a bit, maybe 10 gigs or so? It would be awesome to run on a SSD I would imagine.

Nothing yet, but it will not be very pretty I don't think, since they are going 32->64 bit, and they are changing the disk extender so I doubt v1 pools will be able to just be able to go to v2 pools.

Is there any way to get another copy of the restore disk? I looked on HP's website but it doesn't even look like you can buy it off of there.

Somehow I think I messed up my Mediasmart EX487. NIC light is fine, I can ping the static IP. Boots up, all four drive bays show "good" aqua lights. Power light is stable aqua like it is supposed to be, NIC light is stable aqua. Health light is solid red. I can't remote desktop in or browse to my shares. I did have luck seeing the shares for about 60 seconds after I turned off Windows Firewall but I'm not sure if that was just a coincidence, and I don't see how that would matter.. I can see shares across the network on other PC's with it turned on.

I'm at a loss on how you would even troubleshoot something like this since all it has is a network port and I can't plug in a monitor.
That's a bitch. You can get a copy of the restore disk here,

I tried searching on Google, but is there a way to use windows home server as a media center to stream live tv to another computer (with a tuner card), kind of like what you can do with Xbox 360's media extender's functionality? All the articles I found said it wasn't possible and suggests using videolan, but if the xbox 360's method is software based I don't see why it wouldn't be possible.

This is one of the big things that got dropped from Vail. You will need to run the tuner card in another computer, or you can use something hacky in WHS with sagetv and possibly others.

A guy is making cables for the maintenance port on the motherboard (the HP and acers both use the exact same pin-out for this port) so you can attach a monitor to it.

It may not be of use to those that just want the server to remain as is all the time, but if you plan on backing it up and reinstalling Vail after that comes out, its going to be necessary.

Anyone know what to do here? I wonder if installing and uninstalling the mymovies addin about a year ago had anything to do with this.
