Edit also thanks Kyoon! Your advice was a big part of me deciding on this car out of all the many many wagons I was looking at. In retrospect I wish Id cruised VWVortex a little more and realized how cool Alltracks look lowered - I discounted them automatically because of the extra ride height but I knew I was going to lower any Golf wagon I bought so it really wouldn't have mattered much. If I could have found a Great Falls Green alltrack with that tan interior that would have been perfect I think.

hey no problem! I am glad you are liking it.

GFG looks incredible but the only ones I could find 6MT were SELs with the dark brown interior. My wife was not as keen on dark brown interior vs tan and I did not want sun roof.

i think the W8 passat was more of an availiblity/complexity issue. i mean yes standard B5 problems + the W8 problems + the hideously tight engine bay are a bad time.

but: the allroad has all of the standard C5 problems plus the 2.7TT problems which include a hideously tight engine bay plus air suspension problems.

gun to my head i'll take the Passat. at least it's weirder.

Those are single-piece wipers. The specific wiper doesn't matter too much, just the size, which should be in your owner's manual. There are lots of substitutes - Bosch Icons are pretty well regarded and I've used them successfully in the past.

Nice. One thing that has stopped me from ever considering the used luxury vehicles (BMW, Audi, Mercedes) market was the impression that maintenance would be very expensive on them. Since my "mechanic" skills are non-existent I'd have to pay for one and for parts, so that was always a show-stopper.
I could be wrong though, as with anything car-related.

But they're nice, very nice. I test-drove a Mercedes once and weee ... the engine is powerful. On the highway, when I stepped a bit on the acceleration it just flew. Unlike my old mazda, that just thinks for a few seconds before actually revving and moving faster.

Maintenance and repairs are more expensive on a unit basis as well as occurring more frequently. If you want a car that goes when you press the go pedal without breaking the bank buy like a V6 Camry or a Honda Accord 2.0T.

The Golf is slightly nicer inside and out, but the powertrain is the same. Mk.7s were all built in Puebla for North America, so there isn't a build quality difference between the Golf and Jetta. They came off of the same line. They are equally easy/hard to work on. I would buy the Golf. I think the Jetta feels slightly cheap (because it is made to a slightly cheaper price point).

Yes, I would say on average you'll spend 20-25% more on maintenance and repair. Parts are somewhat more expensive. Independent labor is somewhat more expensive - a lot of shops won't work on VWs and you don't want them to. Find a German specialist for work. Do your scheduled maintenance on-time and on-spec without cutting corners, this will save you money in the long run.

Except of course lots of oil leaks, 3rd breather hose thingy, front control arms. Had to replace rear springs this year, and one door lock mechanism.

Of course parts are cheap in Europe, and mechanic only asks 71€/h. They service only VAG cars.

the absolute guaranteed problems with the C5 are the 2.7TT and the air suspension so you've avoided both of those.

I think APR+ is better than a backpack, I don't trust backpacks for a wide variety of reasons which are probably entirely psychological. Flash is a lot easier than backpack install.

The dealer doesn't really give a gently caress, they'd just as soon have the warranty honored if they can get away with it. It's VWGoA that cares. Just develop a good relationship with your service manager.

Does VW require a scan on warranty? If you're getting a longblock yeah I think that has preauth requirements but usually the dealer has an approval limit.

Yeah, they hook your car up to the scanner anytime it’s in the dealer for service now.

Sure, but that's not the same as VW requiring that scan data to approve a warranty claim. The dealer does not want to deny your warranty claim, it's not their money.

It'll pull timing if you use 87 but won't adversely effect you other than maybe power and maybe a slight hit to fuel economy.

When 93 was running 35 cent premium over 87, I used 93, but now that i live in Michigan and 93 is like a 110 cent premium i don't bother.

I'm about to replace the Skodas Octavia I've been leasing for the past couple of years. It's been perfectly nice and serviceable, especially for the price, but I'm thinking of going for something a bit nicer, and with a bit more ground clerance. My main candidates right now are either a Skoda Superb Scout, that I can fill with a bunch of options, or an Audi A4 Allroad, that would be a bit more bare, but still with everything I need. What would the advantage of the Audi be, besides a little more horsepower (204 vs 190). I assume handling and noise levels? It would be a lease, so reliability and service costs isn't a major concern. The Skoda Kodiaq is also an option, but it's a bit bigger than I really need.

If you're on a lease and they're both within your cost, test drive em both, and decide if you like premium with low options or mass market with high options. It's more a matter of preference.

I am a fan of Skodas as a value play, but if that isn't important to you, go forth and lease what you prefer. Is there a reason you don't consider any other VAG brands? Sounds like you are in a market that might get SEAT as well.
