Nice. One thing that has stopped me from ever considering the used luxury vehicles (BMW, Audi, Mercedes) market was the impression that maintenance would be very expensive on them. Since my "mechanic" skills are non-existent I'd have to pay for one and for parts, so that was always a show-stopper.
I could be wrong though, as with anything car-related.

JD Power Dependability lumps S4 and A4 in the same bucket: https://www.jdpower.com/Cars/Ratings/Dependability/2019/Compact-Premium-Car

They are largely the same car. And really the A4 and A5 are largely the same so the fact that the A5 is 89 for dependability and the A4 is 85 is mostly just noise.

What compact cars are lower than an 85? Hyundai Elantra is an 84, Mazda 3 is 79. Even the vaunted Corolla is only 91...

This is for the last three years of ownership for the 2016 model year.

30 years ago, German luxury cars earned their garage queen reputation but over the last 10 years they have moved up into the top tier in reliability.

That was just what was to hand. But it generally follows that cars that have a lot of problems later in life also had a lot of problems earlier in life (bath tub curve).

There is some analysis I ran across at one point that graphed Lexus vs Audi vs BMW vs MB for issues per 100 vehicles starting in 2001. Early on ze Germans had numbers 300% higher than Lexus but recently their numbers have approached and in some cases surpassed Lexus.

Edit: I am not saying a C300 is cheaper to maintain than a Camry. I am saying that the number of issues is not as far apart as they were historically and are actually nearly on par.

That said there are lots of dedicated VW shops staffed by people who are passionate about VWs. You may not want to mod your VW but they should still be able to help you with pretty much anything you need assuming you don't just use the dealer.

But Rock Auto sells re-manufactured turbos from Mahle/Clevite for about $900 plus a core charge.

I would like to just get the re-manufactured turbo if I can, but I have no idea about the quality of Mahle/Clevite parts. Will it last another 100,000km? Or will it just last 20?

If you have to replace it 2 more time in the next 100,000km is the hassle not worth it? What if it's just once more?

Yes, the rear seat and passenger space in my MK VI GTI was becoming an issue as the kids have grown to seat kicking size and the grandparents have become stiffer. If you can picture granpa pushing the seat all the way back because his legs are cramping up while Nana screams because the seat just slammed into her knees you will get why this was a big problem that needed resolution.

The A4/S4 is larger in that respect, though not huge by any means. The A6 was even roomier but too big for my taste.

Does anyone know if dealer service shops are a significant profit center for new car dealers?

Doing things 'by the book' including required training and inspection steps tends to be very expensive so I understand why dealer service is expensive, I'm just wondering if there is really significant mark up or just a steady, 8% or something.

Splashed out this year on a set of winter tires and winter wheels for my S4. It came with summer tires and I live in MA so I was going to have do something anyway if I were going to drive the car at all for the next 5 months.

Took a little winding snow and ice covered road in the dark last night and the car was perfectly comfortable and controlled without a hint of slip or skittishness. Just perfectly behaved the whole road.

I guarantee my GTI would have had me gripping the wheel and hunched forward waiting for signs of slipping with a hard time to come if we got stuck. Even with my wifes AWD Toyota I would have expected some sliding even if I doubt we'd get stuck in the foot or so we've accumulated so far.

Quattro and snow tires are as good as I've been told.

I did APR+ because it has a warranty. Talked to the shop pretty extensively - they said they just had one claim in on the warranty so far which was for a wastegate actuator and very unlikely to be related to the tune. They seemed to think that APR was being pretty good about warranty claims for what it's worth.

It's a nice tune. A little soft down low, but it pulls very well in mid range. I'm keeping everything else stock for now so I'd just as soon save the clutch and Haldex system.

Which brake light? the pad wear light or the brake lamp light? I frequently get the yellow warning triangle lamp in snow; it's because the cross-traffic and distance detection sensors are obscured.

I was always tempted to get a stage 1 tune but I never pulled the trigger on my GTI.

They have a tune now for the B9 S4 and when you look at number it makes number bigger. People who have gone to the track with their stage 1 APR tune do see an improvement. Launching form 0-60 goes from like, 4.2s to 3.9s and quarter mile times improve a few tenths.

I can't reasonably expect that I will ever notice this level of improvement.

However, the stage 1 tune also allows you to default the engine shut-off at stoplights to off so that alone may be worth the cost.

I know on the older Audi MMI before the MIB versions you could access a green engineering/debug menu and change how the car receives data. Do some digging on the site https://upgrademyaudi.net as he has lots of tutorials about Audi MMI hackery.

They have instructions on converting a MII 3G over to not need a sim but not MIB2.

I suppose it's not really important. I just thought it would be fun. Really, I just use carplay for maps and music anyway.

Messing around it looks like when I am parked at home I can connect my car wifi to my home wifi router and use that to pull down firmware and map updates without an active SIM. So, that's cool, I guess.

Anyone use the myAudi app to stream music? Again, something already handled through Carplay but seems like it could be fun to mess with.

Yes, the front A5/S5 seating position is the same as the A4/S4. The rear seating is different due to the A5/S5 being a coupe or sportback.

The S5 is notably lower seating than the S4 and the roof line is lower also. I’m sure you get used to it but I was much more comfortable sitting in and getting I and out of an S4 than an S5. There is also more room in the back seat of an S4 than an S5.

I had my first 'Do not like' experience with Audi pre-sense.

I was on a road that has a pretty good curve to the left and a car ahead of me was pulling off to the right to make a turn at an area where the shoulder really widens out. At no time was my car in proximity to the other car nor heading towards it. Like, yes if I had decided to also turn right at the speed I was going we would have needed some quick breaking but I was well into veering left by then.

My car freaked out, binged and tapped the breaks for like half a second and then let it go like nothing had happened. I get that it was an odd corner case and 'better safe than sorry' but still pretty annoying.

If they offered it with some Audi engines on an Audi platform like the old B5 Passat was then sure, I could see it, but it's just regular old MQB and the same basic selection of four-pot VW engines they offer on every car.

The way I heard it was that the Arteon was that it was sharing a ton of components with the A7 so much so that its basically an underpowered, deliberately down-styled A7 for a $30k discount. I don't know how true this is but the youtubers who did drive it generally liked it.

Dealer dropped of a new Q3 while they took my car in for service.

Other than the engine I kind of like it? Reminds me of my GTI but with a bigger interior and a taller stance. The infotainment looks like it's the top half of the new A6/7 models and it helps that the HVAC controls all have physical knobs.

The stereo on this one is the base model B&O and it's fine but makes me appreciate how good the upgraded version in my car is. The upgraded stereo (not even the +$3500 one) is a pleasure to listen to with high bit rate audio files. This is just 'good' and it probably doesn't help that I spent a couple of hours on the road yesterday jamming out to tunes in mine.

Position of the cupholders and charging tray are better than my car though.

But man, that engine/transmission. Kind of a deal breaker for me. I'm sure I could get used to it but straining up to 40 mph is not what I expect out of Audi's.

Your car currently has low miles for it's age and you barely drive your car so the chances that you will need a major repair are lower. Any actuarial rates for repairs you are looking at are for cars with an average of 2 to 3 times as many miles on them.

Just keep up with the maintenance.

If you spend less than the value of the car in repairs over the next three years (likely) you have come out ahead.

According to the New York Times, in the 1960s and 1970s, the typical car reached its end of life around 161,000 kilometres (100,000 miles), but due to manufacturing improvements in the 2000s, such as tighter tolerances and better anti-corrosion coatings, the typical car lasts closer to 322,000 kilometres (200,000 miles)'
