I've been spending the last couple months getting "Idm-ish" recommendations on Last.fm and apparently Japan has a pretty big scene of IDM-type music and lots of it is pretty good. A lot of it is glitchy, but with lots of acoustic instruments and stuff. One thing I've noticed is there are lots of female artists making this stuff, which you don't usually see. Also, if you like ryuichi sakamoto+alva noto you should check out sakamoto+fennesz too. I like that even more than the alva noto collaboration but I am a fennesz fanboy. Also, if it hasn't been said before, fennesz' album "endless summer" is a milestone for experimental electronic music

I'd be so god drat happy.

Although I guess the latter is bound to happen sooner or later to stop whatever turns up going on ebay (didn't that A Few Old Tunes cassette go for like $800?) Doubt it's the new Aphex though, we only heard a new album by him was being worked on in March / April, while we've been told a new BOC is on the way for years.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this "something very special indeed". I just hope it's not someone pulling our chain again. There have been cryptic statements coming out regarding BOC for some time now.

Sorry to dash your hopes, chaps, but: http://twitter.com/roughtradeshops "We didn't really listen to the new boards of Canada (there is no new BOC) we listened to the new aphex twin record " followed immediately by "I was joking about a new aphex twin record ..... Sorry . Don't hate me" So anyways. Here's a terrible new Squarepusher single. Okay, maybe not terrible. Just pretty boring. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYSeMVpda78 http://bleep.com/index.php?page=release_details&releaseid=26310 Talk about disappointing. I still think it's either BoC or Aphex 'cause no one really gives a poo poo about anyone else. They are probably just loving with us. As far as Warp is concerned, I'm pretty hyped about the new FlyLo, Rustie, and Seefeel, but I don't think any of those guys would be called "very special." That Squarepusher single is pretty terrible and I usually like a lot of his stuff. Is he with Ed Banger or something now? That's hilarious.

I am not sure if people are that willing to sploorge big dollars on the super limited edition Eno album without getting to hear some samples before. And him releasing on Warp doesn't really mean a thing, Warp has been pretty terrible the last few years.

Mark Van Hoen is pretty drat brilliant, but I can comfortably say that a BoC release does trump Seefeel atm.

I've been experimenting a little here and there with making IDM myself, as it is mostly what I find myself listening to, and therefore would likewise try to make music of the style. I'm actually studying to be a composer, but I have quite the soft spot for electronic music. Anyone wanna give me beats a listen? I just need some feedback because I don't know how good/bad I am. http://soundcloud.com/cgblanco/in-orbit

Well, I've been trying to put together an EP of sorts to submit to some record labels (crossing my fingers for something nice like Alphabasic or PlanetMu), but I have uploaded them to places where you can download some of my music for free, including this track. http://tindeck.com/listen/upxr Here's a link for a download of the song under the project name. Any goons know of any other good IDM type record labels where I could submit my music?

My newest EP was just released via 030303 Records, it's for sale at Clone now. It's not really super "IDM" (I hate that term bla bla), but it surely contains elements of the genre. If this is too much of a spam/plug-y post, tell me and I'll remove it.

There surely is more music on my soundcloud page, although the quality of it is rather variable in my opinion. Also it's not all "IDM".

charlesmanjr posted:I've been experimenting a little here and there with making IDM myself, as it is mostly what I find myself listening to, and therefore would likewise try to make music of the style. I mean it's very generic, and "idm" ran its full gamut in 2001. Unfortunately this track contains all the hallmarks of amateur bedroom electronic music - soft, melodic pads and textures juxtaposed with skittering, warped and clinical percussion; to the extent that you can almost hear you've stapled it ontop. One of the things I suggest you do is listen to a bit of FlyLo or Autechre or something and see how you can make your tracks a living, breathing entity with a life of its own. Listen to "Cfern", listen to how the track shambles and shuffles along, a total subverted take on hip-hop. Work on picking out and developing unique, fresh sounds- the bitcrushing effect at the start of your track, for instance, is so played out it's not even funny. The execution and production is all fine though. If you're studying composition then I would suggest you take a look at composers of yore who worked with tape and electronics, they are a great source of inspiration because they do not provide you with rigid, clear structures that you can simply emulate, as you do here. Good lord I best go to sleep
