Don't bother with Incunabula, it's a rather boring album.

WTF? Incunabula is an incredible release....especially for it coming out in 1993. Pretty much blew anything else coming out during that time period out of the drat ocean, and still holds up fantastically today.

Put the track "444" on very loud in headphones, close your eyes, and it will take you places.

Like how anyone can think Boards of Canada has anything to do with like Aphex or Mu just blows my mind.

well, it is pretty easy to connect the dots, actually, if you look at SCAM Records and the MASK releases of the early 90's, and even Warp records back in the day. All the kids were on there, trading sounds and influences and early Boards and all their side projects were very experimental (perhaps not at the level of what Aphex turned into, but on par with earlier stuff)

Now on the condescending tone of the IDM label, yeah, pretty much everyone thinks that, but it really wasn't intended to be that way, as the term was coined from the Artificial Intelligence compilation that came from Warp records in 1992, which featured all the major players of the new style of electronic dance that wasn't rave. This sound was sort of viewed as much smarter than its candy colored rave rave sounds of the era. So IDM just sort of snapped to it and stuck. Even Richard James makes fun of it, but hey, what can you do? Wikipedia has a pretty good write up on the subject:

quote http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_Dance_Music
Artificial Intelligence

In 1992, Warp released Artificial Intelligence, the first album in the Artificial Intelligence series. Subtitled "electronic listening music from Warp", the record was a collection of tracks from artists such as Autechre, B12, The Black Dog, Aphex Twin, and The Orb, under various aliases.[13] These artists, among others, would eventually become the main topics of conversation in the Intelligent Dance Music List, an electronic mailing list founded in August 1993.
[edit] The IDM List

In November 1991, the phrase "intelligent techno" appeared on Usenet in reference to Coil's The Snow EP.[14] Another instance of the phrase appeared on Usenet in April 1993 in reference to The Black Dog's album Bytes.[15] Wider public use of such terms on the Internet did not come until August 1993, when Alan Parry announced the existence of a new electronic mailing list for discussion of "intelligent" dance music: the Intelligent Dance Music list, or IDM List for short.[16][17]

The first message, sent on August 1, 1993, was entitled "Can Dumb People Enjoy IDM, Too?".[18] A reply from the list server's system administrator, Brian Behlendorf, revealed that Parry originally wanted to create a list devoted to discussion of the music on the Rephlex label, but they decided together to expand its charter to include music similar to what was on Rephlex or that was in different genres but which had been made with similar approaches. They picked the word "intelligent" because it had already appeared on Artificial Intelligence and because it connoted being something beyond just music for dancing, while still being open to interpretation.[19]

Artists that appeared in the first discussions on the list included Autechre, Atom Heart, LFO, and Rephlex Records artists such as Aphex Twin, µ-ziq, and Luke Vibert; plus artists such as The Orb, Richard H. Kirk, and Future Sound of London, and even artists like System 7, William Orbit, Sabres of Paradise, Tycho, Orbital, Plastikman and Björk.

very doubtful, as it has been that way for almost 20 years. The only thing that is happening is we are getting ten million other terms to go along with it that are just as ambiguous and confusing, if not more so.

To me, and this could really be just me, IDM is pretty closely connected with the original ideas and feel of Detroit techno. It's music that showcases it's technology. Also it's earliest forms were basically melds of Detroit techno and Ambient.

I would say that could be a fair analogy, as most of the Techno scene connects well with the IDM scene (Kompact Records for example).

You can also spin that in the direction of Industrial and Ambient (Ant Zen label), Industrial and Techno (Hymen Label), and Techno and Hip Hop (modern era Warp) for other flavors of the scene. This is why it gets so drat confusing as it starts to overlap and become meaningless at best. How do you separate the power noise, break core, two step crunk, and illbient sounds apart from each other?

I just say "hey, check out this awesome tune"

Warp has been re-releasing some classic Detroit stuff along with Tresor and etc but they never collaborated with Kompakt or any of the other major German labels afaik

didn't say that they collaborated, but just that they pair well together in the community, and a lot of the Techno kids are well versed in the "IDM" scene...more so than perhaps other scenes. At least this was my impression while living in Seattle, and hanging around all the Decibel and CMKY festival people.

the one thing that I do love about the whole scene is the amount of "quality" free stuff that is out on the net (read: not pirated), in the form of netlabels. Seems like there are a lot of netlabels that offer a majority of their releases up and are just awesome. While there are pay releases, most of their stuff is open, as their whole focus is to get the music out there under a creative commons license.

Kahvi Collective http://www.kahvi.org/ is a great example of being able to find some outstanding music and artists legitimately, that run the spectrum between ambient, chill, and IDM, and techno. Well worth diving into and exploring. (Suggest: Planet Boelex, 4D Thieves, DJ Polaski, Abyssal Plains to start)

Another good netlabel that I have really enjoyed is Thinner http://www.thinner.cc/pages/home.php
Their artists run the spectrum of minimal, micro, dub, experimental, techno, house, and ambient. While not your standard "IDM" flavor it does cross some nice boarders and I have often used this stuff in DJ sets, notched down 5-10 BPMs

there are TONS more labels out there.

'NinetyNine' had got to be one of the best electronic releases of the late 90's, and is still on my heavy rotation today.

I am curious about what is out there that is new that falls within the more ambient side of idm music? Not really looking for the doom-n-gloom scratchy noise fest that a lot of the ambient stuff can drift into within this scene, but some quality intelligent, beautiful sounding flowing stuff that has emotion, depth, and will hold some interest. BoC, Plaid, Project ELF, Arovane, Galerie Stratique, Gentoo, and Loess have been keeping me interested, just wanting some more directions I should explore.

yeah, THAT specific track may not be close to BoC, but that is not saying that Tyco doesn't lift a lot of his earlier stye from them. For instance, this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nCtPJUyolE

even down to the samples, it drips with early BoC tone

edit: but we could cherry pick tracks all day that reflect what is and isn't influenced by BoC. Nothing wrong with pulling such an influence.

I am really curious, now that we are a year+ with the last Boards of Canada: how are people sitting with it? Is it something you keep coming back to? Has it aged in the past year, or lost interest? It seems for myself that each of their releases has a certain feel and nostalgic element to them, and the hooks that keep me interested are vastly different, but Tomorrow's Harvest I am still trying to figure out where I stand with it, and how much it is still pulling me in and learning new things from. Just curious what the sentiment is for folks after digesting it over a year now.

this just came across my feed, though not sure if it has been posted, as it was from 2012. Pretty interesting recreate of an unreleased/untitled BoC track by Machinedrum
https://soundcloud.com/machinedrum/boc-untitled-machinedrum-edit

from the write up:
I've always been a massive fan of Boards of Canada, if its not obvious already! 10-11 years ago I stumbled upon a bootleg recording of one of their extremely rare live performances at the Warp 10 Birthday party in 1999. The closing tune at this show has always remained a mystery to me. As far as I know it has no title and has never been released. It's quite possibly one of my favorite things they have done and really is a shame it never came out. You can hear the original bootleg recording (quite bad quality) here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYEZueAelKc

Fast forward to Summer 2012... Since I am a huge nerd I decided to take this bootleg recording and re-produce it for fun. Using the recording I laid new drums over the existing drum patterns (almost 100% accurate to original), replayed some synth parts and the bassline. The only thing I didn't try to re-create was the original vocoder parts and some random samples so I used the bootleg recording for that. I was tempted to make a shorter 4-5 minute version but I figured I should preserve the piece in its intended length (although the length was most likely due to it being a live jam).

though on the flipside, their 2001 show was mindblowingly numb and devoid of any and all soul. It almost felt like they were just phoning it in, and pressing the sampler tracks on their computer for two hours. The show I saw in 2009 was a bit more aggro, almost to the point of wanting to punish the audience in some sadistic/masochistic love affair.

I love their music, but the live shows can be a wild mixed bag.
