The best answer is the one that fits your hand and budget. Good 9mm pistols:
Glock 17/19/34, Sig P225/P226/P229, HK USP (I don't like it though), FNP-9, S&W M&P, CZ-75 & clones, Browning Hi-Power (can't go wrong with that)... the list goes on.

edit: actually if you're in california and you cant carry anyway you might consider a 17.

though, if i lived in a state with the stupid 10rd mag rule i would probably just buy a 1911, to avoid feeling frustrated and limp each time i loaded my glock mags.

I love my XD40 service model (first gen), but I'd like to upgrade it a bit and I was wondering if the following are worth it:

- trigger job (eliminate extra travel, grittiness has gone away due to use)
- texturing/applying talon type grips
- getting a streamlight (believe it or not I have a NCStar that has been on there for 3 years without breaking)
- getting night sights
- getting the "defensive" style sights
- extended magazines

The gun is my nightstand gun, and I take it to the range every time I go out so that I can practice with it. I don't ever carry it, thats my 1911's job, but I do like it and would like to give it a bit of a boost for not a lot of money.

Not mine but I wanted to put a picture in. (Mine is exactly the same)

I've come to realize that the best way to spruce up a Springfield XD of any kind for very little money is to trade it in towards another gun. It should be worth enough to take the sting out of a better pistol purchase. Seriously though, I'd go with a bayonet.

Question: What's the deal with this gun:
http://www.x-ringsupply.com/files/E...ke_6-51-765.jpg

An Erma-Werke KGP68A in .380ACP. It looks like Erma-Werke is (was?) a German company making other-caliber copies of the P.08. Are they any good?

If this pistol doesn't have a cute GELADEN loaded chamber indicator, I'm not interested.

IMO the only 2 worthwhile 'upgrades' you listed are the night sights and the TLR.

you will never be able to make an XD trigger as nice as a 1911 or BHP trigger. if you really want to dick with a striker fired pistol trigger, sell the XD and buy a glock and gently caress with that one.

besides, if this is a nightstand gun/range toy it would just be a silly investment of money. if you want a really nice target pistol, buy another gun.

finally, i dont know what kind of "extended magazines' you're looking at but for both practical and range purposes, unless you really just like dumping ammo, the 15 rounds of .40 in the normal magazines is more than enough.

I'm definitely thinking the TLR (the NCStar light, although funcitonal, isn't very good), and the night sights were another one I was leaning towards. And as far as night sights front/rear vs night sight front, defensive (large & black, hehe) rear, which would be better for a low light situation with the target within 15 yards?

I was going to do extended mags in the 15-20 round range because the factory ones I have are only (only) 12 rounds.

I'm not gonna trade it in, it is the first pistol I ever purchased and I really like the gun. It's been good to me and has been great through almost 3k rounds. Besides, I've shot a few different Glocks and I just don't like the way they feel as much as the XDs, an M&P . . . maybe.

No opinions on the grip tape? It's not gonna be a competition gun or anything, but after my hands get sweaty my grip on the gun gets noticeably worse. I've seen this happen after 100 rounds or so at the range on a hot day. On my 1911 with 20lpi checkered front and back strap with aggressively checked wood grips I don't really have the same issue. Obviously in the home defense scenario this will probably not come into play as much as at the range (unless I'm stressed, it's hot, or I just got done beating it and my hands are all slick).

I have a 1911 for target stuff.

The only reason I was thinking about the trigger job is that the overtravel on the XDs is a bit much and the local gunsmith will do it for about $100 (less than Springfield custom charges for their "combat" trigger job and essentially the same thing).

BLO gun stock refinishing questions:

I followed Cyrano's guide on the TFR Wiki page pretty much to a "T" on 2 Nagant stocks and I must say that everything has really gone well for the most part. Purple Power really seemed to do the trick and had both stocks looking clean and dry.

I have now started to apply the coats of BLO and it looks really really great when I hang them up "wet" but as they dry the look dull and feel all tacky. I started with 30/70 BLO/mineral spirits, moved up to 50/50 for 4 coats, and now I have 4 coats of 100% BLO with 24hrs dry time in between. All coast have been applied with 0000 steel wool.

When I have tried to just buff the stocks with steel wool, the stocks are so tacky they shred the wool and start turning the stocks gray as it rubs off. by wetting down the stocks/steel wool with a little BLO that goes away but my stocks still don't feel smooth. What can I do to get these finished or how many more coats of BLO should they take?

Final question? If I apply Howards feed and Wax at the end is that going to make the stocks really really shiny or just give it a nice waxy layer of protection?

BTW no sand paper was ever used during this process and I'm quite happy with how its turned out until this point, I just want to get rid of that tackyness and get those feeling smooth. All you expert mil-surp stock refinishes let me know what to do from here.

A friend has a .22 luger made by Erma that doesn't function for poo poo regardless of the level of cleaning or ammo used. At $300 or so, I might buy one for the sheer novelty (in .380, as I've never seen that variant before), but anyone I've ever talked to that owned or shot the .22 Erma lugers agreed that they were monumental piles of rear end.

Lurking here has pretty much told me the ideal first handgun is a Glock 17 or 19. Sounds reasonable. I wouldn't even mind a used one, as they have an incredible reputation.

The local merchant of loud things has a brand new S&W Sigma SW9VE for the same price as a used G17. What about one of those? Are they really as horrible as everyone says, or is that a TFR meme?

But you were dead a thousand times. Hopeless encounters successfully won.

You should definitely try them at a range, if you can. I personally do not like Glocks. There's just something about their aesthetics and feel that rubs me the wrong way.

Yeah, rent as much as you can. The range I went to when I first got into shooting had a "we'll show you how to shoot and give you unlimited rentals for $x" deal that I did so I could find what I wanted. Not a bad idea as long as $x is reasonable.

That said, I settled on a Glock 17.
