I did the WHMIS (like MSDS, but :canada:) compliance stuff for a place I worked and all we had was isopropyl alcohol. Was not a big deal.

And yet I still had a marketing dude come in and ask if he could "borrow" some to take home to clean some electronics. In this handy empty plastic water bottle. NOTHING BAD COULD COME OF THAT NO SIREE.

Marketing guys are pretty much exactly as depicted in Dilbert comics. I'm pretty sure he would have made it 5 steps and gone "oh hey a water bottle with what must be water!" and chugged the whole thing.

I think the biggest question is why do you need to shoot a turtle. Can't you just run up to them with a large net? Are these the speedy gonzales of the turtle world?

What are the procedures regarding officers carrying firearms in prisons? Do they bring them when escorting prisoners or doing the rounds? Or are the firearms confined to the control rooms/towers/catwalks and the like? Or if the special tactics guys have to swing into action.

Aha, glad that the mini-docs I've watched on The Most Dangerous Prisons in America or something along those lines on the discovery channel have not led me astray. I recall seeing one where there was a lot of pepper spray used but as far as guns none of the COs had them at all. So I was getting a little confused by the talk of handguns at Pelican Bay!

Makes sense the perimeter guards would have em, though. I've seen tower guards on those shows with Mini-14s too. Must be to make escapes more exciting. :v:

I had some trouble with the first thrower linked, depending on the soil condition it can just pull its spikes out of the ground after a throw. Mounting it on a spare tire would probably help a lot though.

Either that or come prepared with some good weights to put on the legs, randomly scavenged rocks didn't work too good :(

I'm sure it varies greatly from range to range, but I'm curious as to what your typical outdoor range will allow you to shoot besides a paper target... just whatever is lying around on the ground?

Totally depends on the range, it's whatever they'd be ok with cleaning up afterwards I guess. My indoor range I've seen people shooting ski boots suspended from a target carrier, and they apparently have pumpkin shoots sometimes. That'd get drat messy!

Best bet is to ask if they allow any reactive targets and see what they say.

Ok, I've been looking at getting involved with IPSC, and one interesting thing I've noticed is in production class (no SAO) you are to start with a chambered round and the hammer (if there is one) DOWN.

On Glocks and guns with decockers, this is fine, but what about DA/SAs like the CZ Shadow that has no decocker? Does this mean they expect you to do a trigger squeeze + pinch hammer between thumb and forefinger to lower it? Seems somewhat unsafe.

Speaking of 10/22s, does anyone have any opinions on the 10/22 books on Amazon?

I'm thinking of getting this one. Basically my main interest is possibly building a 10/22 from the bare receiver, or if I get a new one installing the improved bolt release right off the bat and improving it as I go. And adding tech sights, of course.

In addition I have Cartridges of the world and Hatcher's Notebook also in my shopping cart.

Any other recommended firearm related books (maintenance, history, modifications, catalogs, whatever) would be great. I know I can find a lot of info online but I like having book form stuff too.

My uncle does a lot of hunting in some pretty rugged areas in northern BC and has some interesting stories and info about bears. For example, if you jump over a log and practically land on a black bear, 9 times out of 10 the black bear will run away. With a brown bear you're about at 50/50 between it running away or attacking you.

Bears have also figured out to go towards the sounds of gunfire because it means a nice meaty gutpile or downed carcass for them. So when two guys are gutting a deer/moose/whatever always do it facing each other keeping an eye out for a bear. With the rifle very close by, of course. I guess the reasoning is better to get it done quicker with both sets of hands than one guy gutting and the other guy standing guard. Less likelihood that they'd have to shoot a bear that came investigating.

I still say the freakiest poo poo in the woods are cougars, because if they want to attack you you won't even see them until it is too late and they have their fangs in your neck. Thankfully I guess people don't taste that great and they don't attack people all that often. I think you're more likely to be hit by lightning, really. Still freaky!

I would like to do a "Grizzly Man" and "Project Grizzly" double feature sometime. Sort of puts things in perspective that bears give no gently caress about killing people if it serves their interests.

Best not to get into the confrontation with the bear in the first place but if it gets to that be prepared I suppose.

If you're replacing drywall perhaps something to add security to the room with a steel mesh reinforcement or however they do it. Reinforced door jamb, sold core door, deadbolts, alarm system IR sensor, something to secure the windows..

On an indoor range getting the ventilation up to snuff would be a large cost too. The range I go to has these huge fans going probably with special filters that require regular servicing/replacement. The entire wall behind the stalls is essentially metal mesh that pulls the air out along with any particulate matter. I'll have to check next time I'm in where the air return is.

The owner and guys who work there seem to always be enjoying it when I go in, so it definitely has the possibility of being a real fun time.

It's basically a VZ.58 only the civilian version.

CZ 858s rock and are really popular in Canada (AKs are prohibited) and myself and a number of other Canuck goons have one.

Nice shooting, easy to clean, reliable, a pretty good aftermarket (with people starting to make new stuff for it) and cheap cheap surplus ammo make it an all-round winner.
