I've yet to actually be robbed, but carrying the minimal amount possible on you will make the experience a bit less terrible I'm sure. As for sleeping on the beach, the same goes for parks in other cities. A daytime nap is no problem though and will make a huge difference in your days when you can't sleep past 8am thanks to your 10 person dorm being blistering hot in august.
