Proud Dad moment: my kids has the day off of school on Monday, and my company also takes Presidents' Day as a holiday while Mrs. Doctor had to keep the wheels of capitalism turning. We had ordered a couple DOTS jewelry boxes last fall and forgot about them at Christmas, and found them last month. So in the afternoon, after playing outside in the snow and having hot cocoa, I dug the sets out. 10yo N+1th Doctor did her set all on her own, while I helped her 5yo younger sister. The cool thing is, much like the rest of the line, there is a healthy amount of freedom to decorate the boxes however you like. N+ith Doctor and I did this design: Here's N+1th's box: Monday was a great day with hardly any fighting and it was nice to see them having such a good time together after almost a year of COVID-home-staying.

I think Dots is a bit of an underrated theme actually. Some sets are already on clearance where I am so I grabbed some and they have some pretty good parts. Great for detailing as long as you can use the bright colours!

Sneaky morning stream testing my laptop for future lego streams. Let me know how it looks/sounds/is. http://www.twitch.tv/rodshaftmd Edit: Done. Thanks. I'll take a look at the vod and see how it was. Particularly the mic. Is like to do this regularly, but slobs copied everything over from my main pc to my laptop so my sound profile was so messed up for this mic. We built the Monster Fighters Ghost Train engine and messed with it to get it to work on a track. Judging just from the picture the other wheels just need to be swapped out and that's all I'll have to do so I'll order those and hopefully get them in time. After finishing the engine this morning it should be pretty easy. I just removed one if the vertical pins from the boiler (is that right?) And that gives the front enough wobble to go around curves, I'll probs do it better later, but it works. I also ordered some axel type train wheels to replace the car's wheels. I'll have to build a car or two for the motor and battery in that style but it doesn't seem as hard as it did before I started.

I feel like LEGO trains are probably not much less expensive as a hobby than standard H/O trains. Sucks that they keep changing everything for them (power supply, track) otherwise I would get one. I really like that Flying Scotsman looking one or the TVA bullet train looking one.

Only get into Lego trains if you really like Lego AND trains and don't want the hassle of doing both. So far I think the customizability of the Lego trains makes the drawbacks worth it, but they could be doing way more to appeal to train fans. Edit: hmm, just stumbled across this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-cMwe0jenE Edit: hmm, as much as that appeals to me, $70 per 8 pieces of track makes me think dealing with the batteries is worth it. davebo fucked around with this message at 04:44 on Feb 20, 2021 |

Hey that's me, but I can't wait until my toddler can play. I set up a lego train around the Christmas tree and gave him the controller. He had a blast. The main issue with Lego and trains is the real estate trains take up. You really need to have elevated sections of land to handle their giant turning radius. I also don't have any free time so my town is currently a mess and not at all set up.

After finishing Ninjago City Gardens this week (aside from a single missing piece), I had one thing left in my pile of shame: the Ship in a Bottle. This step was tedious, and I ended up with three extra that I needed to take out Okay not really. I did chuckle when I finally got to it despite knowing it was coming. "Just toss two bags worth in, that's Bag 3. Moving on to 4..." was just too funny to me. I hope my missing piece arrives by Wednesday; I'm planning to run my current on-hand sets to my office when I go pick up my new work laptop and I'd hate to need to keep track of a single piece until the after times come.

To be honest, I’d much rather have “pour 200 1x1 pieces in” than an Architecture set that actually uses them and they have to be perfectly aligned.

I just built that set last week after it was 30% off and that step was so satisfying. Not often you just pour a bunch of loose bricks into something. And then shaking the bottle to evenly distribute them along the bottom... A++

I'm no expert but the order of those steps is baffling me, wouldn't it better to put the "water" studs in before the actual ship? Seems like the way it's in the instructions studs can jam on the ship and then you have to shake things even more to get them loose when it'd be simpler to pour first, settle them, then put the ship on them

So far I think the customizability of the Lego trains makes the drawbacks worth it, but they could be doing way more to appeal to train fans. This is really neat! Looks like they’re just reproducing the 9v track powered system lego has forsaken. Hopefully the price goes down, but glad to know there’s new production for these pieces. Battery power just isn’t enough to drive the dozen plus carriages I want to throw on there. Even the electrified bogey engines needed one on the front and back to get around the tree this year. Besides power, really the only problem with lego trains is the real estate they take up. An elevated track line like the Chicago metro system is probably what I’ll wind up building out, but I really wish Lego still sold monorail or revamped the monorail system. A slim vertically oriented transit system is great for a lego scale city and really brings the whole thing alive. Other option is ceiling hung train tracks around the office, which might be a perfect way to save some space and still go nuts with the trains. Putting them out for a month or two at a time around the tree isn’t enough imho

Sucks that they keep changing everything for them (power supply, track) otherwise I would get one. I really like that Flying Scotsman looking one or the TVA bullet train looking one. Lego trains are weird these days. In the 12V era you had all kinds of cool stuff, like signals which would actually stop the train when red, remote controlled switches and crossings, electric lights and all kinds of trains and cars. Then in the 9V era they kind of gave up on remote controlled stuff/signals, but you still got all sorts of things like extra train cars, crossings, the "UCS" train shed and a lot more, even a train wash thing like this: The best combination really would have been the track and buildings from 9V era (the 12V track is really cumbersome to deal with) with all the cool accessories from the 12V era and trains from both. But nowadays, trains seem to have been reduced to one passenger and one freight train set every couple of years and every next train set seems to use a completely different power system than the previous one. So they don't really seem to know what to do with the trains these days and I certainly wouldn't consider these sets to be worth it.

Does LEGO manufacture their electronics in-house? If not it might be a result of the electronics being contracted out to an external supplier, and each new train set being a new contract. If the supplier is different and/or has to retool for the latest train set release anyway, it might be cheaper to just go with a new design rather than try to achieve compatibility with the electronics of the previous releases.

Carbohydrates posted:The F40 is so cool and so great except for one big thing that has kept me from bothering to track one down, which is the way they did the rear pillars. Just printed red on a black slope. It means that half of the side windows are open air and half of them are opaque black slopes, and it looks so weird to me. I feel like a modern attempt at the build would have done it totally differently, and it puts me off the old one. Such a small thing to get hung up on, but it keeps my money* in my pocket, so whatever! They make up for it for the way they did the intakes on the hood. Yeah it's not a perfect model but it does so much right, you can even pick it up by the roof and it doesn't pull off. The way they widened the body for the rear wheels is epic too.
