Yeah, the writing has been on the wall for the Athletic for a while: Their subscriber base isn't nearly large enough to fund the aggressive expansion model they've had over the past several years, especially with establishing local beats for almost every team in every major league. That requires a ton of money not only to initially capitalize but also keep on going; there's a reason they're back to running $1 for 6 months promos and the like, because their entire model is predicated upon people not only subscribing, but being like the vast majority of people and forgetting to set a calendar reminder to drop their trial before the subscription auto-renews. I am sure there's still money dripping from the spigot, but it's not the outpouring that it once was back in, what, 2015 or so when they were founded? Here's some of their current high-profile writers: MLB: Ken Rosenthal, Jayson Stark, Peter Gammons, Jim Bowden, Eno Sarris, Joe Posnanski, Andrew Baggarly, Grant Brisbee, Emma Span, Keith Law, Molly Knight NBA: Shams Charania, David Aldridge, Sam Amick, Zach Harper, Marcus Thompson, Joe Vardon, Ethan Strauss NFL: Michael Lombardi, Lindsay Jones, Dane Brugler, Bob Sturm, Mike Sando, John Hollinger, Robert Mays NHL: Pierre LeBrun, Katie Strang, James Mirtle, Corey Pronman, Justin Bourne, Dom Luszczyszyn, Craig Custance, Michael Russo, Sean McIndoe NCAA football: Stewart Mandel, Bruce Feldman, Nicole Auerbach, Faux Pelini (anonymous parody of coach Bo Pelini) NCAA basketball: Seth Davis, Dana O'Neil, Brian Hamilton, Ken Pomeroy NASCAR: Jeff Gluck, Jordan Bianchi, David Smith, Alison Sneag MLS: Paul Tenorio, Pablo Maurer, Sam Stejskal, Matt Pentz, Felipe Cardenas, Jeff Reuter Women's soccer: Meg Linehan Media: Richard Deitsch A lot of those folks do not come cheaply at all.

Australia is the only similar market without going really multi-lingual.

Kenny Mayne is absolutely one of the GOAT. I'd argue he, if not introduced, at the very least propagated dry humor in sports commentary.

Pretty good. The Times certainly knows how to run an online media organization. And I feel like that's about as good an outcome as you could hope for absent VCs willing to subsidize the whole thing in perpetuity.

I get one of the smaller papers in the Tribune's portfolio (one that nevertheless contributes two sports writers to the annual baseball/football previews) and the rot has been setting in for years. It's been poo poo since they move the printing press to the Daily News' plant in Jersey. A ten pm deadline has made things even worse. I can't image the axe taking too long to fall.
